Icy Treats For Summer

You all remember otter pops and those cheap-o popsicles your mom broke in half for you and your siblings. And who could forget fudgesicles, those bastions of pure, frozen, chocolate deliciousness? And while many of these cool summer treats are still available today, the prices have gone up somewhat since you were a kid. And you may have realized, as an adult, that they’re pretty much made of sugar…not so good for your health. However, there are plenty of ways to have the frozen treats you love (and even throw in some adult flavor) with less damage to your wallet (and your waistline).

For starters, you don’t have to avoid the frozen section at the grocery store. You can always wait for sales or coupons to get the brand name items you crave, or try the generic versions for less. Plus, buying in bulk at Costco could keep you in grape-sicle heaven all summer. And for those counting calories, there are a number of companies, like Skinny Cow, that offer frozen desserts with less sugar and fat. But as always, the most cost-effective way to have your favorite treats (and customize them to your dietary needs) is to make them yourself. If you don’t know where to start, you may want to invest in some forms or trays. Amazon has several options that come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and prices (as low as about $5), so you should have no trouble finding one that fits your freezer and your family. If you think the trays are too expensive, or you simply want to experiment a bit before getting yet another gadget to clutter up your kitchen, use an average ice cube tray and some toothpicks to see if you like the results.

As for what you put in your popsicles, that is entirely up to your discretion. But if you need an idea to get started, try fruit or vegetable juices, lemonade, or iced tea. If you go for sugar-free options, you can make a guiltless treat for those sweltering summer afternoons. You can also blend up a healthy and delicious smoothie to freeze for something that is a little creamier. Or if you’re ready to try something a little more complex, simply look for recipes online. A search on the Food Network website turns up some really fancy popsicle ideas, including some that are not for the tots (like margarita or martini freezes). They also have some party-worthy treats like coconut pops and classic Italian ice popsicles that your adult (non-alcoholic) friends will love. And for the kids, you can find perennial favorites from the county fair like chocolate-dipped frozen bananas (they’re not exactly ice, but they are an excellent summer treat!). RecipeZaar offers more tradition fruit recipes, with the notable addition of yogurt pops. And fudgesicles are so easy, you don’t even have to search for a recipe – just whip up some instant pudding mix, pour it in your trays, and freeze it!

So if you’re looking for a way to make some icy treats to stave off the hot rays of the summer sun, your best bet is to find a popsicle tray that suits you (kids will love ones that are swirly or shaped like stars, rockets, or their favorite cartoon characters) and you’ll quickly make back whatever you would have spent on frozen fare for the summer. Plus, by doing it at home, you can control the contents for healthier snacking while you continue to save on your grocery bill.

Review and Giveaway:Smead Stadium file

Tuesday, June 29, 2010

I recently recieved for review, the Smead Stadium file.
This file was nice as it had the labels for it as well as a tiered look for easy viewing. It is small however and doesn't open too wide, so you can't fill it full of tons of paperwork, but it is a good "starter file."
I think it's good to stay organized and file folders like this, make the task of filing and saving important papers, much easier.

The 12-pocket Stadium File is ideal for clearing clutter from your workspace or countertop. You can turn piles into files with this tiered expanding file that lets you see everything at a glance. The pockets are tiered and fixed so the papers don't fall to the bottom of the file. Great for organizing papers and folders.

Details of the file:

12-pocket tiered expanding file for easy organization and viewing.

Holds letter size papers and folders.

Tiered and fixed pockets so papers stay visible.

Fully-lined expanding Tyvek gusset.

Size 12-1/4"W x 13-5/8" H, Expands to 9-1/8" front to back.

Our sponser would love to give away one of these file folders to one lucky winner from Canada or the USA.
A random draw will be made on July 9,2010 from all entries recieved, by Random.org.

Top 10 Ways To Save Money On Your Groceries

Be frugal on thirst-quenchers. Bottled water is a complete waste of money and the packaging sucks for the environment. Ditch the bottled water and get a tap water filter instead. Also, reconsider other drink purchases. Juice drinks tend to be costly – and what you’re usually paying for is the filtered water! Try flavoring your water with lemon and real fruit slices.

Buy inexpensive staples that last. Beans (canned are good, but bagged are cheaper), canned vegetables, frozen fruit and vegetables, salsas, whole grain breads and pastas – these can all be relatively cheap if you buy them in bulk. Also, they can typically last in your pantry, fridge and/or freezer for quite some time. If you always have these staples on hand, you are less likely to feel the need to go out to eat or to spend on quick meals fixes like frozen meals.

Buy what’s in season. Buying seasonal produce is usually cheaper. See here to find out what’s in season where you live.

Cross-compare the costs of your standard items. Make a cross-comparison spreadsheet of your staple grocery items and how much they cost per ounce or pound, when not on sale, at three different grocery stores in your area. Update every couple of months. This is a bit of a time investment at first, but it’s worth it -- it’ll make it easier for you to spot when things become cheaper elsewhere, or when a sale really is a sale.

Ditch packaged, flavored grain/rice dishes. If you read the back of that $4 flavored rice dish, you’ll usually find that you have most of the ingredients at home to make it (except for all the strange chemicals and preservatives, thankfully). Invest in a rice cooker (if you need one; I still do it the old fashioned in-a-pot way), some spices and basic sauces and you’re good to go – no jazzy rice mix needed!

Ditch protein/energy/snack bars. Most protein and energy bars are at least a buck each – why waste a dollar as if money’s going out of style? You can make your own energy bars with dates, nuts and oats, for example. Simply search online for a recipe that has your favorite ingredients and try it out. Once you find a recipe you like, you’re set! Also, consider that beans, fruits, veggies and whole grains are nature’s ultimate energy sources – if you’re eating right, you don’t need these bars anyway!

Ditch the “packs.” Avoid calorie packs and DIY salad kits – convenience comes at a price since you’re paying the extra packaging costs. You can easily make your own “100 calorie” packs, too – just portion out snacks in reusable containers.

Get social. Talk to people or connect with frugal-living and savings blogs on Facebook. Outside of the weather, there are very few universal conversational topics. I consider saving money to be universal! Ask your friends how they save money – I’m sure you’ll learn something new. Or, check out this list of “Top 100 Blogs for the Frugal Gourmet”here as a starting point.

Put it in writing. Consider your grocery list a semi contract – when the chips that weren’t on your list start calling your name, tell them they’ll have to speak to your lawyer (your unyielding wallet). This, of course, means you should spend the time to make sure your list really reflects your needs before you go shopping.

Shop ethnic grocery stores. When I did a cost-comparison between my local grocery store, a warehouse and the local ethnic grocery store, I found that the latter was always the cheapest in produce.

How to Get Your Child to Eat His Supper

The most recent problem I have with my kids is getting them to eat supper. This sickness apparently isn’t only an occurrence at my supper table, but many of my friends tell me that their kids suffer from the same ailment.

So how do we get our kids to co-operate?

I have found that when we include kids in the kitchen and allow them to help us, they are much more likely to eat. One of my kids’ favorite suppers (I think it’s all kids favorite supper!) is pizza. The problem with this is that, buying pizza is costly and can’t be bought in advance (unless you’re buying the frozen type, which my kids won’t touch). So I came up with a plan that’ll stop making me feel like a rotten mother, and that’ll allow them to enjoy their favorite food more often.

I looked around for a fast and easy recipe and found one that is quick, easy and not too much of a mess. I now make the most delicious pizza in the comfort of my home. It is the most smashing success!! The dough takes under 15 minutes to prepare. I lay out all kinds of toppings and the kids have a ball making their own personal pies exactly how they like them.

Finally I am at rest and they are well fed.

Delicious Homemade Pizza Dough

Ingredients

1 (.25 ounce) package active dry yeast

1 teaspoon white sugar

1 cup warm water (110 degrees F/45 degrees C)

2 1/2 cups bread flour

2 tablespoons olive oil

1 teaspoon salt

Directions

Preheat oven to 450 degrees F (230 degrees C). In a medium bowl, dissolve yeast and sugar in warm water. Let stand until creamy, about 10 minutes.

Stir in flour, salt and oil. Beat until smooth. Let rest for 5 minutes.

Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface and pat or roll into a round. Transfer crust to a lightly greased pizza pan or baker's peel dusted with cornmeal. Spread with desired toppings and bake in preheated oven for 15 to 20 minutes, or until golden brown. Let baked pizza cool for 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

- This recipe yields 1 12 inch pizza (the size of a regular pie).

- I just divide it up to give each kid their own pie.

- This recipe is very easily doubled.

Bad Credit is Not the End: How to Rebuild Slowly From The Bottom Up

Monday, June 28, 2010

For most people, suddenly finding themselves faced by bad credit seems like a life sentence. While it is a blow to lose your financial creditworthiness, it is not impossible to rebuild it.

Stabilize Your Finances

The first step is to stabilize your finances. Unless you have a stable income, there is no way to prove financial stability to existing and/or potential creditors. If you try to start rebuilding your credit before you are ready financially, you may risk doing even more harm to your already damaged credit profile.

Rebuilding credit is all about proving financial stability and dependability to creditors. The more stable your cash flow and payments, the less the risk to the lending company, and the easier it becomes to negotiate credit, as well as better interest rates.

Unless you have a solid income, or only need a small amount of credit to start, you may want to guard against premature credit applications. You are likely to be faced with unusually high interest rates, which might make repayments difficult again. There are some companies that thrive on lending money to bad debtors - at ridiculous rates (due to the risk).

Be Smart with Your Existing/Open Credit Card

If you still have access to a credit card, pay it on time, and use it as sparingly as you have to. If you have been using the company's services for a while, you could negotiate better rates, and even a lower minimum monthly payment. Being able to hang on to an existing credit card is the easiest way to start repairing your bad credit history.

Check Out Other Rebuilding Options

If you do not have access to a credit card any more, there are other options. One option is to consider  personal loans for bad credit candidates. You could borrow small amounts at a time, and repay it as fast as possible. Another option is the use of secured credit cards - underwritten by a major corporation, but only good for as much as your deposit. This way, the risk for the lender is minimized, while you still have access to credit, and can prove stability.

Review Your Credit Report

Check you credit reports from time to time. If you draw your credit reports from all three the major bureaus (Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion), chances are that some of the information will be different on each of them. If you find any incorrect entries, make a dispute to the credit agency - the company has to verify it, or delete it from your profile. This way you can ensure that all you regular monthly payments are noted, and it will add to your credit score.

At the end of the day, you will have to accept that your bad credit score did not happen overnight and repairing it will take some time. However, as soon as you are financially secure, you should start working on it systematically. Start off small, using your existing credit card, or a secured credit card, or personal loans for bad credit. Over time, you will be allowed access to larger and larger amounts of credit, at more and more reasonable rates. At the end of the day, it comes back to stability, risk and trust.

My Baby is Gone

Well, Erika left this morning, bright and early, on her way to Alberta, to take her-at least 2 year- accounting couse. She left with her boyfriend, who will also be going to school in Calgary.
This will be the first time on her own and without mom and Gerry there to help her out .
She did very well at the grad ceremony on Friday night- and it really was a beautiful night. She recieved over $1,000 in scholarships and bursaries, as well as made the honor roll for over 80%,( her average was quite close to making the 90% and over honor roll,). She put in a hard last year of alot of homework and assignments.
The car was packed as full as we could possibly get it today.
It will be about a 10-12 hour drive to her new home. Hopefully we will be able to get that way this summer. There has been some holiday "issues" at Gerry's workplace,so, even if it is a quick getaway, I will be happy with that.
She still has alot of stuff here that needs to go but her boyfriend's parents are suppose to be going for a visit in July and will take more things of hers down.
I'll miss her, but it is nice to have email- it makes those that are far from us, that much more closer.

Review: Kettle Foods chips

Saturday, June 26, 2010

Well, I recieved my Kettle brand chips from Kettle Foods, and I always like to at least try to eat the foods we get in to review. Alot have been organic so that is great- they usually keep things on the straight and even with me.
Well, I must say these kettle chips are to die for! They are soo good. Crunchy, tasty and I had no tummy problems with eating them at all.

They have a natural promise to you:

Absolutely nothing artificial

They carry potato chips, kettle chips, baked chips, organic chips, tortilla chips, and nut butters.

How to Straighten Your Kids Teeth Without Braces

While wire braces are the traditional method for straightening children’s teeth, they are not the only method available. In addition to investing in advanced clear braces for teeth, there are many other things that a parent can do to keep their child’s smile looking good. Developing excellent oral hygiene is absolutely necessary from an early age. Children who learn healthy oral habits are children whose teeth will certainly benefit in the long run.

Certain habits that should be avoided would include sucking thumbs and using teeth as tools. Teeth are easily damaged. The more your child sucks his or her thumb, the more likely the teeth will start to conform and grow crooked. The same is true if they develop a habit of opening things with their teeth. Pulling on teeth continually can influence the position of the teeth which will in turn lead to a need for straightening them eventually.

There are other less obvious habits that are not so easily avoided. Some children simply have a tendency to swallow food incorrectly along with breathing in from the mouth instead of the nose. By doing either of these two tasks incorrectly, children can negatively influence the development of their teeth and jaw structure. This can and will lead to crooked teeth. When the teeth and jaw structure has been developed incorrectly, it makes it so that the teeth are prone to being crooked, even after they have been straightened with traditional wire braces. That is why it is best to use more advanced methods that are designed to fix the issue at the root.

There are more advanced types of braces that do not use wires which can help children’s mouths to develop properly. These methods will make it so that teeth will not be as prone to going crooked again after treatment. Certain types of clear braces for teeth can better develop the arch of the mouth and create a wider smile which will help to correct the issue. Parents who look into options such as this for their children at a younger age will experience much faster success than if they wait for their child to fully develop. Indeed, there are several ways to straighten children’s teeth without using traditional wire braces.

You can shop the Yum Nut shop, and if you combine orders with family and friends- an order of $100+ gets you free shipping.

Cashews for a Healthier you:  Nuts contain the protein, smart fats, like oleic acid, and essential minerals to help us perform at our best. They use the best natural ingredients to create a product with a simple ingredient statement that is both healthy and yummy. They start with premium jumbo cashews and use a special flavoring technique to add a delicate dose of delicious seasonings that ensures that every Yumnut, in every batch is truly yum.

Most flavored nuts are roasted in oils or coated in suspicious ingredients and heavy batters. Yum Nuts don't use artificial colors, flavors or sweeteners to make their nuts taste great. Nor do they try to change the taste of our cashews by roasting them in peanut oil. They  think that’s just nuts.

Timeshare Rental Can Save You Money on Your Next Vacation

There's an easy way to have your vacation and your budget, too. The pundits are calling it the "Nearcation." And it works perfectly for anyone who is seriously budget-conscious, but also wants to take the family on a real vacation. A short drive, an inexpensive timeshare rental, and you'll have it.

Just about wherever you live in the U.S. you can find timeshare rental resorts within a several hundred mile drive. Take out your map, find where you live, and draw a circle out as many miles as you feel your budget will allow you to drive one-way. Within that circumference there will most likely be a timeshare resort.

Why a timeshare rental? It is by far the most economical way to vacation with a family. Consider this - you can find many timeshares for rent directly from their owners, and a great many will be under - or way under - $100/night - to sleep 4 (often 50% less than a hotel room.) You can even find larger timeshare rentals that will sleep up to 8, with pull out sofas. Because this includes separate bedrooms, you can save even more money by vacationing with another family and splitting the cost.

Your timeshare rental not only includes separate bedrooms, a living room and a dining area, but will also come with a fully-equipped kitchen. What a money saver that is. Instead of having to feed the kids in restaurants for every meal, you can prepare most of your meals at your timeshare, and if you're driving you can bring your groceries with you. The amount that you will save just on meals can be the life-saver for your vacation plans.

Another advantage of renting a budget timeshare is that it will be attached to a resort. Check out the many timeshare rentals available through their owners on RedWeek.com, and you'll see that most of them are attached to luxury resorts. Ever think you could afford a "luxury" vacation for your family? Well, now you can. And that means that the resort's many amenities are also yours for the enjoyment, including swimming pools (frequently with waterpark features), hot tubs, tennis, maybe even golf, often arts and craft classes and arcade game rooms.

So rent a timeshare, keep your budget, and give your family the vacation they deserve.

Review: Bora Bora Foods

You know how you can't just eat one chip? Well, the Bora Bora Organic bars are the same- only these are healthier for you! You honestly cannot just stop at one bite.
I am food sensitive- especially to coconut and nuts. Maybe it's their oils- I don't know. I do know they don't like me though, so was leary about trying the bars. However, I thought there is no way just Gerry is going to sink his teeth into these. Well, I'm glad I did. They are soooo good. Organic and all natural.I wish all healthy foods tasted this good.

Where can you buy them and try them you ask? Check out many locations near you, or buy online now. View all their flavours, or search for ones with your favorite ingrediants.

Bora Bora products are inspired by Bora Bora-organic, all natural, with nothing artificial added- ever.

Review and Giveaway: Izola Shower

Although Izola Shower does sell shower curtains, they also carry some poster place mats: featuring old  New York City, as I reviewed, Vencie, Paris and London.
These are a sturdy wipe free board with photo, that have a cork backing. Sold in sets of two. 16" x 12", for $14.99. Free shipping on all orders as well.

We have normally had 4 placemats on our table, but with my youngest heading to college in a few days, the set of 2 will work fine for Gerry and I.

Izola also carries world destination shower curtains in  black and white, much like the place mats.
I'm kind of fond of the black and white look for photos.
The place mats have made a nice new addition to our dining table.

Izola would  like to give away a  set of your choice of place mats, to one lucky entrant from Canada or the USA.
A random draw will be made by Random.org on July 5,2010

Cheap Getaways on Your Last Dime

Yes, you still want to go on vacation this summer, but you probably don't have the same budget to spend that you once did, correct? If that is the case, it is time to start to explore off of the beaten path, meaning that you need to look for cheap and local getaways that will give you a wonderful and memorable vacation experience.

Chicago: In the nearby town of Galena, you will find a beautiful and historic appeal. This is three hours away from Chicago, and there are unique Victorian mansions, bed and breakfasts, and a local eateries offering delicious cuisine. You can pay admission to see many of the historic sites within the town, like $4 to see the home of Ulysses S. Grant. Not too shabby...

Los Angeles: If you are in the California area and want to get out of town, why not check out Catalina Island? This is a popular and beautiful destination, and the round-trip ferry from San Pedro or Long Beach to Catalina Island is around $66 per person. There are delightful little cottages in the area that you can rent, not to mention a delicious steakhouse or seafood restaurant at your disposal. This is truly the finest locale that you can get for a low cost.

New York City: A short drive away from the city is Litchfield, CT, which is a classic and beautiful area of New England. Here you will find covered bridges, tall trees, and winding roads to add a little bit of romance to your vacation. There are many different bed and breakfasts to choose from, and you can also do tastings at the local Haight-Brown Vineyard for only $8.50 per person.

As you can see, your upcoming summer vacation doesn't have to break the bank. All it takes is a little bit of creativity to find the perfect destination at half of the price!

Summer Book Swap For Children

A budget friendly & fun way to kick-off a summer of reading! Here’s how…

Invite friends (in the same grade) to bring 3 used paperback books that

are at their current reading level.

After the children arrive, display the books on a large table or two.

Draw numbers for the order in which the children will choose a book. For

example, if there are 10 children at the party, put numbers 1 – 10 into

the drawing & each child picks a number.

Round 1 begins! The child that drew #1 picks a book, then the child that

drew #2 picks a book, and so on.

Before beginning round 2 & round 3, draw numbers again. This turns the

swap into a game, adds to the fun and prevents the same child from always

having first pick or always having last pick!

So…each child arrived at the party with 3 books, and they’ll leave with 3

books!

After the final round, make bookmarks (using scrap paper, markers &

assorted stickers).

Have information to give the children on summer reading clubs at your

local library or bookstore. Most clubs offer incentives or prizes for

reading!

Refreshments…let the children make their own ice cream sundaes!

HAPPY SUMMER READING!
