Book Review- Heaven is For Real by Todd Burpo

Monday, January 31, 2011

I first heard of the book -"Heaven is For Real " from a clip on Yahoo. It was a media news clip about a little boy named Colton Burpo, who had made it through an emergency apendectomy and had a family who was overjoyed by his survival.
But what was to follow in the coming months, was to completely change their lives, and possibly those of others, that will hear Colton's story. A true story by a boy, not yet four years old, who had left his body during surgery and went to heaven.
He survives and begins talking about being able to look down and see the doctor operating and his dad praying in the waiting room. The family didn't know what to believe but soon the evidence is clear.

I truly enjoyed this book. I love reading religious stories, and about heaven, and the story itself had moments when it truly touched me and brought tears to my eyes.
This book will change the way you think about eternity and give you a glimpse of heaven.
This is an easy to read book, and once you start reading, won't be able to put it down.

Review and Giveaway:(Canada only) Happy Chinese New Year Canada from Maltezers

Kung Hei Fat Choy! = Happy Chinese New Year!

We love Maltesers in our home!

I find there are many ways to eat them as well. From just diving in and eating them with one big crunch, to nibbling off the chocolate around them, to letting them melt in your mouth. When I was growing up I remember buying the small bags, but it's nice to see the bigger bags now, although not so nice on the "hips".

Facts about Maltesers and Chinese New Year:Kung Hei Fat Choy! = Happy Chinese New Year!

Mars Canada Inc., the makers of Maltesers®, have always celebrated the brand's association with this annual holiday.

Some say that it is because malted milk is a flavour enjoyed in Chinese culture.
Others say it is due to the bright red packaging, which symbolizes good fortune and joy.

The Maltesers® brand has been celebrating Chinese New Year with Canadians and chocolate-lovers around the world since 1936.

About Maltesers:

Maltesers® are chocolate-coated, honeycombed malt biscuit balls and are delicious! They are fun to eat and the honeycombed malt biscuit balls are coated in milk chocolate and are so light, they actually float on water!

The original idea was to deliver the taste of malted milk in a delicious and fun chocolatey ball — simply a great idea.

Maltesers® candies have a playful crunch, with a slow chocolaty melt.

About Chinese New Year:

The origin of the Chinese New Year Calendar is deeply rooted in age old traditions, dating from 2600BC when the Emperor Huang Ti introduced the first cycle of the zodiac.

Chinese New Year, Lunar New Year, or Spring Festival is the most important of the traditional Chinese holidays. Falling on Thursday February 3, 2011, it is often inaccurately called "Lunar New Year", because—as part of the lunisolar Chinese calendar—the date is partially determined based on lunar phase. The festival traditionally begins on the first day of the first month (Chinese: 正月; pinyin: zhÄ“ng yuè) in the Chinese calendar and ends with Lantern Festival, which is on the 15th day. The Chinese New Year festivities conclude February 18th, 2011.

People who celebrate Chinese New Year often say "Kung Hei Fat Choy" which means having a great fortune, or "Kung Hall Sun Hei", which implies Happy New Year!

And now on to our giveaway.....Maltezers has a sweet giveaway for one lucky Canadian reader, $80 worth of their product in this celebration of the Chinese New Year.

A random draw will be made by Random.org on February 19,2011 from all entries recieved.

What Happens to Your Credit Score After Bankruptcy?

What Happens to Your Credit Score After Bankruptcy?
In most cases, the credit score is already very low to begin with, so what happens to your credit score after bankruptcy immediately would be very little change, if any. The bankruptcy itself will impact any future efforts to obtain credit.

Most persons who have gone bankrupt discover that very quickly they will be receiving new offers of credit. The reason for this is that the lenders understand that a person will not be able to again claim bankruptcy for a period of from 4 to 7 years, depending on what type of bankruptcy they just completed.

The bankruptcy discharge eliminates claimed old debt. In time, everything will move down the credit history and any credit score then has an opportunity to recover. Within two years following a bankruptcy, most persons are again obtaining credit, mortgages, and so forth. Even if a bankruptcy is claimed, the person going bankrupt can exempt certain debts that they are willing to continue to pay. This is good for the credit history and score, as long as each and every payment is done meticulously on time and in the full amount due.

Since recovery from bankruptcy takes a long time, it is a great opportunity to work on improving a credit history by being extremely responsible for any remaining or new debts. The credit score will gradually recover and once the discharge is ten years past, even the negative of the bankruptcy will drop off the credit record, and a credit score can jump higher.

During a bankruptcy discharge, the credit record is cleansed of all old bad debts and history of late payments. Accounts that are included in the bankruptcy will instead carry a note that the debt was included in the bankruptcy. This alone may actually cause a credit score to go up slightly, as there are less notations of poor payment history remaining on the credit record.

A desire to improve a credit score should never be the reason to declare bankruptcy. The act of going bankrupt will be a negative entry on the credit history for a full ten years or longer, and lenders will see a problem. Slow and steady is always the best way to improve a credit history, which will, in turn improve the scoring calculations.

What happens to your credit score after bankruptcy really depends on how responsible you are paying remaining or new debts in the future years. Bankruptcy offers the borrower a chance to start over anew, with a cleansed record. If the same mistakes are repeated, the credit history and credit scores will suffer and another bankruptcy action will not be available for many years.

If unsecured credit is not available to you following a bankruptcy, consider a secured credit account. Be totally responsible for making all payments on time and this is an excellent way to rebuild credit history records and your credit score.

Romantic Valentine's Day Nights At Home

Think you have to spend a lot of money to make your sweetheart feel special? Not so! if you are looking for something romantic on Valentine's Day, check out these ideas on how to pamper your sweetheart and make him or her feel truly special.

A fireplace picnic - It's too cold for an outdoor picnic, so why not have one indoors? Get a nice fleece blanket and lay it out in front of the fireplace. Put some romantic music on the stereo, serve strawberries or other fruit, and includes some champagne on ice. Include a romantic boardgame for something truly special.

Sweetheart's Spa Night - Get a hot bubble bath filled with rose petals ready for when your sweetie comes home from work. Have a box of chocolates to nibble on and a glass of champagne or wine by the side of the bathtub.

Get the bed ready while your sweetheart is in the bath and put some fresh, warm towels nearby. Light some scented candles and gather up some washcloths and other items including massage oil, moisturizers, foot rubs and so on, and give your sweetie a massage! Afterwards, enjoy your favorite take-out in bed while watching a romantic movie together.

Another favorite idea is a "red hot lovers gift basket" that you and your Valentine can enjoy. You can purchase one of these from the many specialty shops at the mall. If you choose to give a gift to your sweetheart, make it a romantic one!

Now that you set a romantic mood for your sweetheart, here are some tips to make Valentine's Day last all year long:

- The relationship - your partnership - with your sweetheart must be a mutually supportive one that encourages the dreams and visions held by the other person. Always let your partner know that you value his or her opinions, ideas and - especially - feelings.

- Don't downplay your partner's heartfelt emotions. Don't say "You shouldn't feel that way" to a heartfelt opinion. This is what your partner is feeling at a particular moment in time and it is their choice to feel that way. Listen with understanding. The best thing to say is "I understand how you feel." And if the situation calls for it, give him or her a hug!

- It's not always easy to pay attention to "the little things." It takes effort and practice, and yet it is one of the most important parts of a healthy and successful relationship. It is the little things that count, and if they're left to simmer without attention, just like a pot on the stove, they can boil over into a major conflict.

Finally, and most important of all, love! Show your partner that he or she is special every day of the year!

Review:Pringles Stix- Keeping Your New Years Resolution on Track!

New Year's Resolution statistics reveal that 75 percent of people keep their resolution after the first week, 71 percent are still on the wagon after two weeks and 64 percent have kept their pledge after a month! If you’re starting to struggle with your weight loss resolution, consider keeping portion controlled snacks on hand for whenever you feel hungry.

With almost 97% of New Year's resolutions never fulfilled, snack on Pringles Stix when hunger strikes. These individually wrapped 90-calorie packs are great to throw into your purse, stash in your desk or keep in your gym bag for anytime you have a craving.

I will admit, I did have one of each of these stix to try, but with food intolerances, such as MSG and some milk products, I really had to be careful. It's one of the first things I do when I get a product, is read the ingrediants label.
These do contain milk, soy and wheat for those with food allergies and intolerances to these products, you may have to avoid or be careful.

We recieved cheese and pizza to try, and if I didn't have these food problems, I would have loved to have eaten a whole pack. Instead I had to watch Gerry enjoy his!
He really liked the flavors though, with the cheese being his favorite. Not greasy and packaged at less than 100 calories per pack for those counting their calories.

Having just a "taste" of them though was difficult I will admit.I really liked what I did try and think they make a nice snack, if you can control yourself to eating just one pack!

A Lesson Learned-I Hope

Thursday, January 27, 2011

Well, I have a confession.

How many of you play the scratch off tickets? We all do don't we?
(Hey, I'm trying to justify my bad choice today.)

Gerry plays the lottery weekly. We haven't seen much back but $10 or a few free plays in the 5 years I've been with him.I always tell him if he'd had given me that money I would have had it saved for him, and it would be LIKE he had won the lottery when I give it back to him in x amount of years.

I played a $10 ticket the other day. I won $10 back and played another ticket with that money and won $50! That was nice. I thought for sure if I bought more of that same ticket with all the big prizes on it, I would have even better luck. I decided to go to the ticket centre today and get 5 more of that same ticket.

I had a good feeling about buying them prior to actually getting them.
The girl even opened a new package and pulled off 5 tickets, one after another. Certainly one had to be a winner, but in the end, I didn't win a dime.

I always tell my kids and Gerry, if your meant to win, you'll win. It won't take 5 or 10 tickets. It will only take that one ticket. Certainly not practising what I preach today and feeling very down about a bad choice.

Decrease Your Energy, Increase Your Savings

Wednesday, January 26, 2011

Decreasing your energy may not sound like much fun, but when you’re talking about the energy you use in your home, you could save a lot by cutting back on your consumption. And not only will you see a positive effect when it comes to your utility bill, you’ll also be doing your part to reduce your carbon footprint. But how do you go about cutting down on the electricity you’re using in your home? Are there ways to stop altogether? Will you have to spend a lot of money for upgrades and installations in order to secure these savings? These are all valid questions that need to be addressed before you can go ahead with slashing your energy usage (and the cost that comes with it). Here are a few helpful hints to get you on your way.

For starters, you need to assess how you’re using energy and where it’s being wasted. You should think about having an energy audit done. Often, your utility provider has technicians that can come to your house and test for leaks around doors, windows, and other potential problem areas and then give you a full report. You can also contact an independent company to secure this service, and many will fix any problems they find (if you so desire). Of course, you may be able to do the same thing on your own. You can check for leakage of air around doors and windows yourself by shining a light around the seams and having someone else see if there is any bleed-through. If there is, you might want to consider installing some weather stripping (which is pretty simple and inexpensive). Other problem areas, such as insulation around walls and pipes, may be harder to check on your own (and repair).

And you can always cut down on heating and air-conditioning costs by using a little common sense. Set the timer on your thermostat to power off when you’re not going to be home. And during extreme weather, take measures that will allow you to moderate the temperature. For cold weather, throw on a sweater. And when it gets warm, open the windows to let in a breeze (unless it is unbearably hot, in which case you should shut windows and curtains to keep the house cooler). You can also consider creative landscaping. Trees can provide shade in the summer and act as a wind-break against winter gales.

As for other areas, you can almost certainly cut back on lighting costs by relying on natural light as much as possible (and installing energy-efficient compact fluorescent bulbs, or CFLs). Old appliances can be replaced with energy-star models and you can look into a tankless water heater that only needs energy when you’re using hot water. And cut phantom drain (the energy your electronics are sucking up even when powered off) by attaching power cables to one easy-to-unplug power strip.

If you want to go all out, you can even look into alternative sources of energy. Solar, wind, water, and geothermal power are all options, although you will likely have to install some pretty expensive equipment to harness them. However, government rebates and tax breaks will help to recoup some of your initial cost. And the fact that you have no electricity bill to pay each month (not to mention the excess power you can sell back to the grid) will have you earning money from your green energy choices before long.

Kyle Simpson writes for Southern States, the quality name in high voltage switching. Whether you are in need of high voltage disconnect switches, power fuses, or anything for your electrical power transmission and distribution needs, Southern States will tailor a custom solution for you .

Keeping Your Food Fresh-Longer

Have you ever stored a tasty dish safely inside your fridge with the expectation that it would still be fresh and ready to eat when you came back, only to find it covered in mold and completely inedible a couple days later? Maybe you figured your meat would last a couple of weeks in the icebox but instead you discovered it riddled with freezer-burn. Or have you stored a loaf of bread on the counter and opened the bag to find a bread-flavored rock awaiting you? And don’t forget about the time you delved into your bag of flour and came up with a cupful of weevils (ick). There are a lot of ways that your food can get spoiled, but most of them can be controlled with a little background knowledge in proper storage techniques.

First and foremost, you need to store your food at the proper temperature. For the fridge, this means somewhere between 35 and 38 degrees Fahrenheit while the freezer should be kept at, or slightly below, zero. If your temperature is any higher, it will result in premature spoilage. The fridge can be kept slightly cooler than recommended (although if you begin to see liquids freezing, it’s probably a bit too cold). And keep in mind that items like fruits and vegetables can be kept in crisper drawers designed to keep them fresh (sometimes with their own temperature control). But if you crank the AC in your freezer, you’re likely to suffer the ugly spots that are a telltale sign of freezer-burn. If you think there’s something wrong with the temp in your fridge or ice box, simply throw in a magnetic thermometer strip and check it out. You may need to have it serviced.

As for dry goods, the main way to store them properly is in an area that is neither too hot nor too humid (to discourage mold from forming). You should also use sealed containers for everything. This will keep harmful bacteria to a minimum as well as discouraging the presence of insects. Tupperware is a good choice for items like flour, sugar, cereal, and pasta (products that will likely be stored for quite a while). As for crackers, cookies, breads, and the like, you should consider placing them (packaging and all) inside Ziploc bags (squeeze out excess air before sealing to ensure freshness). Food items stored in the fridge and freezer can receive similar treatment and Ziploc even offers special bags that are sure to stave off freezer-burn.

Since it’s not only inconvenient to suffer food spoilage, but also expensive, you want to do everything you can to keep your foods fresh and ready for consumption longer. To do this, you simply need a little know-how and a few tricks up your sleeve. By checking your refrigerator regularly for a constant temperature, you can keep cold items from succumbing to mold and spoilage. And by using air-tight containers or baggies to store food, you will avoid the incursion of pesky bacteria and persistent insects. It doesn’t take much to keep your larder stocked, so save money and time by following these guidelines for fresh food storage.

Just the packaging alone is enough to get you all excited for the great taste of Community Coffee's, Mardi Gras Gift Set. Community Coffee is currently selling a cute gift set to help celebrate Mardi Gras 2011.

The set includes Carnivale Cake ground coffee and their Mardi Gras travel tumbler. To complete the duo they included Mardi Gras beads. My niece was quite happy with these as they have a Mardi Gras dance coming up soon at their school.

The coffee itself is very nice. The coffee is a medium roasted, Central American flavored coffee with a perfectly balanced blend of vanilla and cinnamon.I just love smelling it from the bag-mmmmm.As some of you already know, I'm not the coffee drinker, Gerry is, but I love the smell of dry roasted coffee, and he loves this coffee blend.

If your a big coffee lover you'll want to check out their coffee club as well, with discounts and gift offerings. Plus "good to know" info-their site carries traditional coffee, gourmet coffee, and tea.

Community Coffee would love to offer the same gift set to one of our lucky readers from Canada or the USA.

A random draw will be held by Random.org on February 3,2011 from all entries recieved.

Time To Renovate-The Living Room-Update

The before and after of our table Gerry sanded and repainted for the living room.

Sunday- January 23

Sundays are usually quiet around our place. I usually do all the housework on Saturday, and emails are pretty slow all weekend.
It did warm up a bit today- but still -18 I believe.
I decided to go out for a skidoo ride this afternoon.
I don't go out for long though as the outfit I have isn't very warm. The skidoo pants are his hand me down ones I believe and pretty worn out in the legs. Very thin already. The jacket I got looks puffy but it's only a regular winter coat that I bought bigger, at a thrift store- I think for $5 a few years back, so I always wear a sweater underneath. Perhaps one day I will get the opportunity to review a new suit. For now, this will do me fine. I usually don't go out when it's too cold though. Was looking around on the lakes today to see if we could spot any wildlife. There had been talk and video online, of wolves in the area.
We own a 2 up seat so I ride on the back, and Gerry drives. He likes to "play" in the deeper snow so usually goes back out again once we get home.I like us sticking to the trails and playing it safe.
After his older skidoo broke down last year and he had to walk home some 9 miles, he always takes the cell phone with him when he goes out. It's "house rule".
On another note, Gerry spent some of the weekend putting coats of spray paint on the other coffee tables that needed painting, and painting one of our little tables that holds photos.
(Will have more photos to show in the next day or two on that.)
He brought in some drywall to fix one of our last remaining kitchen walls that is outdated, but after all the fresh air he got from snowmobiling and snow shovelling and blowing, I'm not sure he will feel like doing it today.
Hope you all had a great weekend!

Today's Tip

Saturday, January 22, 2011

My mom wanted to share with you today's tip:

"I used a different brand of cake mix and the cake got over baked, which
of course makes it dry. I wasn't happy with that, but then I decided to put
a slice of bread in the pan where I had cut two pieces, I covered the cake
with saran wrap, placing toothpicks in various spots so the icing didn't
touch the wrap.
This morning when I checked the cake it was nice and moist. "

The same principle works when placing bread in hard, dry brown sugar. Where there's
a will, there's a way.

Taking the Pressure Off Valentine Day Gift Shopping

Thursday, January 20, 2011

Finding the perfect Valentine's Day gift takes more than looking for the item that catches your eye. If you want the "Shut-up!" reaction - that's the good one, not the bad one - you need to have an understanding of your partner's personality and budget.
Psychology plays a major role in determining how a person will react to a gift. It elevates a present from just an item you buy to a complex symbol of your relationship and love. No pressure, right? Once you choose a gift begin a budget plan now to avoid any mishaps later. Know the amount you are going to spend and set it aside, you can do this all at once, or make smaller contributions between now and the 14th.

The Perfect Gift for a New Relationship

If your relationship is fairly new, Valentine's Day can be a tricky. Be careful about the message you want to send. For appropriate gifts, consider the following options:

•Luxury chocolate. This non-committal gift indicates your interest but doesn't put any pressure on either person to move the relationship to the next level.

• Flowers. The type of flowers you purchase can indicate your level of interest (or disinterest), so make sure you work with a florist to find the right option.

• A heart-shaped pendant. Touted as the perfect gift for a new girlfriend, you can find these in several metal choices and sizes.

• M&Ms with NFL Team Logos. The ultimate non-committal gift for a guy or girl who loves sports and chocolate, specialized M&Ms elevate your gift one notch above a variety pack of chocolates.

• Chocolate-dipped strawberries. As a hand-dipped aphrodisiac, this gift can indicate your desire to have some physical fun. You can also pair this gift with a nice wine.

Surprise Your Long-Term Love

In this situation, not only can you spend more money, but you should also have a better understanding of what your partner likes and dislikes. The message is simple: one of everlasting love. Consider one of the following top gifts to surprise your loved one:

• An espresso maker. This is perfect for either a guy or a girl who can't start the day without a kick of caffeine.

• High-end lingerie. Introducing playful attire can add a spark to your intimacy. It can also show you aren't bored with your partner or your sex life.

• Gemstone earrings, necklaces, bracelets, or luxury watches. Jewelry can be the perfect expression of committed love. Just make sure you don't buy a ring of any type unless you plan to propose. (And you know those "special" items some jewelry stores tout on the radio and TV over and over and over? Stay away from them unless you want your love to run into hundreds of others wearing the same thing!)

• A spa getaway or a ride along in a stock car. Plan an activity or a weekend trip doing something your loved one will enjoy. The memories of the experience will last longer than any other gift.

In order to give the perfect Valentine's Day gift, psychology is important. Make sure you know what your gift will say to your loved one in advance so that you send the message - and the gift - that's appropriate for your relationship. Don’t mess up ;)

Time To Renovate-The Living Room-Update

We continue slowly with fixing up our living room and updating us from the 80's into the current times. From the 80's tends to come alot of brass accents, one of which was our coffee and end tables, that were Gerry's when I moved in almost 5 years ago.

I wanted to change them out but without the expense of getting new tables, as they were still in good shape, so as you will see in the photos, we decided to spray paint them black.

We've done one and may or may not wait till Spring to do the others. The spray paint is quite strong, and we had to be very careful with overspray.Even with the first coat, and a drop cloth, there was still overspray and lucky for us SOS pads fixed that up. With the second coat, we picked up a stove box from the hardware store and used that. Less overspray but still some.

As you can see, the end result was nice and for this one table we did so far, Gerry didn't even use a full can of paint.
** Sorry about the order of the photos, it's the way my editing loaded them. The first one starts with the bottom photo actually.

7 Ways You Should Spend Your Money

Tuesday, January 18, 2011

Saving your money is a great idea. But ultimately, you should save so you can spend money later on those things important to you. You can outsource extremely complex tasks, such as electrical work you aren't comfortable doing. Hire people for jobs you are physically incapable of performing, such as surgery on yourself. Here are a few other times when you should spend your money, wisely of course.

7. Add value to your house and car.
While your home and car insurance premiums likely won't lower much from doing improvements, the likelihood is that keeping what you own well maintained will result in filing less frequent claims. This will lower your rates. It also means you'll have to pay less out-of-pocket costs for deferred maintenance.

6. Travel to see the people who matter.
They may not be blood relations, but there are some people who you should visit. These are the people who stick by you. Never forsake them. Make sure you take the time to visit while you can because you never know how long a person will live.

5. Get personal training.
A knowledgeable personal trainer will help you with the most important thing in your life: your life itself! Nothing is more important than great health. Health being a key word, focus on becoming healthy not a European runway model (many of whom are not at their healthy weight). There is a lot you can learn in one or two months time that will help you succeed. Then, you can drop the trainer bill and carry on by yourself.

4. Fix problems.
Is your computer, furnace, air conditioner, car, or any other thing in your life making a sound it has never made before? Are you just going to ignore it? Ignore things that look, sound, or even feel like problems at your own peril. They most likely won't fix themselves.

3. Become more educated.
Education is the seed of freedom. People who learn more grow more, and people who don't tend to atrophy. Spending money on personal development will keep you on the former path. So long as you actually use the knowledge you gain, you will find that your life gets better in a lot of different ways.

2. Take a nice vacation.
If your vacation is healthy and relaxing, it's all right to splurge a bit. It's not a great idea to clean out your retirement account or go into debt for a vacation, as that may end up creating more stress than it removes. But within reason, a vacation will most likely do you a lot of good.

1. Buy healthier food.
No one is saying that you have to go vegan. However, you can focus on the basics, eating more eggs and less cereal, eating leaner cuts of meat, more complex carbohydrates, 100% whole wheat bread and pasta, and gradually reduce the amount of fat in your milk (whole, 2%, 1%, skim).

Some times in life, you have to be a penny pincher. At other times, you've just got to shell out for the things that really matter. While this list is a solid group of good suggestions, the power to choose what is most important ultimately rests with you. Some people call this conscious spending, but other people just call it pretty obvious.

Create a Savings Plan For The Future

Most of us would like to have a savings in place, especially with job security low as the “Great Recession” drags into another year. But saying it and doing it are two different things. Actually taking the initiative to start a savings and then sticking to a plan to put money in from every paycheck is not as easy as one might expect. Or is it? With bills to pay and unexpected expenses popping up, you may have a hard time hanging onto that extra cash that you intended to save. But if you plan accordingly, you can pay the monthly bills, account for the unexpected, and still have some money left to sock away in the bank. But how do you get started?

First you’re going to have to take a long, hard look at your finances. You probably don’t have any clue what you’re actually spending. Sure, you have a fair notion of what you make each month and how much you pay out in bills, but it’s the rest of the money that seems to go mysteriously AWOL each month that you need to get a handle on. To help figure out just how much you’re spending frivolously, you need to save all of your receipts for a month, then go back and see where you were buying. You’ll probably find you spent quite a bit on eating out and entertainment, neither of which you figured into your overall expenses.

Now that you know what you’re spending, it’s time to plan a budget. Since most adults have never done this before, you may want to consult with a financial planner. Bring in an itemized list of household income and expenses (don’t forget to break out annual and biannual payments like insurance, as well) so that your agent has everything needed to form a complete financial picture. Then have him or her show you what goes into planning a budget and how to make one that works for you. You can also do this on your own with helpful hints from the internet (although an in-person tutorial from an expert couldn’t hurt).

The real trick with any budget is to be realistic. If you’re used to a certain lifestyle, it’s going to be hard to give up for something as seemingly nebulous as “savings”. After all, what good is money if you don’t spend it? If this has been your attitude heretofore, you’re going to need some time to cut back. If you go cold turkey, you’ll likely renege on your plan and go back to your old ways. Instead, include a weekly allotment of funds for entertainment (including dining out) along with any money going into savings. While you will almost certainly have to cut back on fun outside the home, you may find other ways to compensate, such as a weekly potluck with friends (which allows for socializing without the major expense).

And don’t ever feel like you’re not putting enough into savings. Every little bit counts. Even if you can only afford $50 out of every paycheck, it’s something that’s going in the bank to earn for you rather than purchasing another cup of coffee and a pastry at Starbucks (which will only earn you more pounds on the scale). So if you want to start saving but don’t know how, formulate a budget and be realistic about your spending habits. Only through perseverance and careful planning can you save the money that you might need for a rainy day.

Your One Income Story by Rosanne of Illinois

Monday, January 17, 2011

We have lived on one income for the last 16 and 1/2 years.

We have raised 4 sons who attended private schools during this time.

First of all I never leave home without a coupon. Whether I'm at the grocery store where I also check the mark down bins, or any fast food restaurant or any other store-coupons are in the car with me.

I turn off lights unplug everything not being used, turn the heat off when we go to bed, and don’t buy anything until we have saved the money. We drive old cars, continually check receipts to make sure the price we were charged was correct and wear clothing over and over.

I go online to find things at a better price and sell old books online and items on eBay. I have an annual garage sale where I sell clothing and household items that was not accepted by the consignment store. If it does not sell at the garage sale I donate it. We give to our church regularly trusting that God will provide for us.

My husband's income fluctuates with the economy. We don't have health club memberships, nor do we get a newspaper nor do we have a landline phone. My husband does all the yard and repair work.

We are all college educated and our sons have attended top 50 universities. They were top students grade wise and involvement in sports and extracurricular activities and all got scholarships or fellowships.

Yes we do sit home a lot watching Redbox movies in the winter but we do occasionally spend for a vacation or on gifts for others.

Review and Giveaway ( US only): Ilari

Saturday, January 15, 2011

Review by: Cynthia,(my mom)

Since I am sensitive to most perfumes, my mom was the one that reviewed Ilari for us. As I have mentioned before, she loves, loves, loves her perfumes and had this to say about Ilari:

"This is one perfume that will appeal to anyone. It seems to call your name.
It is a wonderful perfume that is soft, and feminine.

I found it to be unusual and different from other perfumes I have tried.
I would gladly recommend it to anyone. It is not overpowering- just right."

The unique blend of oils gives ILARI a slightly varied yet equally intoxicating aura on each woman who wears it.ILARI is a .35 oz bottle of an exotic blend of jasmine, sandalwood, musk, ebony wood and orange blossom. Ilari creates the elusive marriage of soft and feminine with clean and herbal .

Ilari roll on perfume is available to buy online for $65 plus shipping, or can be located at a store in a few locations possibly near you.

Ilari would like to give away one of their perfumes to one lucky US reader of ours.

A random draw will be made by Random.org on January 26,2011 from all entries recieved.

Your Opinion Counts

Friday, January 14, 2011

It had been a while since I posted anything in "Your Opinion Counts", so I got a hold of some products I had recently been using and made some calls. I was on the hunt for some product coupons but my main call was about my probiotics I had bought:

-Swiss probiotics- really didn't agree with me. I had been using Webber and switched because I saw a "sale". Well, you know the old saying about "it's not a sale if.."
I called the company since Walmart would not take them back, and they had me send them back along with my postage reciept. They will be sending back the cost of them wholesale,( which is more than what I paid), plus my postage. So not a bad deal.

-ED Smith- no coupons but said they could print me off recipes. I though- I could do that at home if I wanted, so turned that offer down.

-Et Tu Caesar-sending coupons

-Nature Valley and Betty Crocker- no coupons

By calling product companies, and voicing your opinion about their products, you can often get coupons for your call, either cents off or free product coupons.
