Review and Giveaway: Spenco Footwear For Men or Women

I do alot of walking in the Summer as I love to be outdoors when the weather is nice and exercise is important to me,as well as a good pair of sandals.

I recently came across some support sandals that really do feel different on my feet.Very comfortable. These are Spenco® PolySorb® Total Support Sandals.Unlike some other slip-ons, Spenco® Sandals are designed with orthotic-quality arch and heel support and there really is a difference.

I normally wear a sandal that has strap around the back of the foot,so it doesn't feel like I'm losing my sandals when I walk, but with these, I really do feel the support without that back strap, and so, so comfortable.

These sandals are available in a range of sizes for men and women, and three styles so you'll find it easy to be fashionable with your favorite color or styles with the choices they have.

Spenco Footwear would love to give away one of these pairs of sandals for men or women to one lucky reader from Canada or the USA.( Please note:winner may choose for man or woman, style and size, but color will be selected by Spenco.) A random draw will be held on July 14,2011 by Random.org from all entries recieved.

Good Luck to All!

Getting Car Insurance Abroad

Business people are frequently taken to foreign countries in the name of work, often for years on end. This presents a myriad of issues for financial planning that extends from your pensions to your personal saving account – drivers will have extra challenges to confront as they will need to get their car insurance sorted out. Here are a few steps that will help you make this transition without any hassle.

First of all you need to cancel all your insurance plans in your previous country, preferably before leaving. It is also worth investigating whether your insurance company or bank offers services in your destination country, this will allow you to transfer over seamlessly and pair you with a provider that you are comfortable with. That is the easiest solution of all.

If you are not able to stay with a familiar insurance company or bank you should look for large multi-national companies that have developed customer service. Insurance regulations in your new country may be quite arcane, or you may encounter significant linguistic difficulties – in these situations it always good to deal with a big company who are likely to be accustomed to dealing with foreign clients who only speak English.

Finally, you need to spend a bit more time investigating your options before committing to an insurance plan: there may be significant difference on issues like coverage, road side benefits and deductibles that might seem entirely foreign to you. By devoting a fair bit of time to some thorough research you should be able to find something that suits you well.

If you are living abroad for a long period of time a car may well be essential, especially if you are bringing your family – just make sure you get the right insurance plan or it could end up being a bit of a hassle.

Today's Quick Tip

My daughter was looking for a coupon code to use online with one of her next order, but everything she was finding was expired,so she called the company directly and was given a percentage off her order, just by asking. So next time you want to place an order and can't find a coupon code, call the company and ask.

It's Almost Time To Celebrate Canada Day and Independence Day

Tuesday, June 28, 2011

We might share the same continent, but Canada and the United States are two different countries with two different days of national celebration.

Canada Day, originally Dominion Day, celebrates the joining of three British colonies into one country at which time the country remain under British control. It was not until 1982 that Canada broke free from the United Kingdom and became its own independent nation. This day is celebrated in Canada every year on July 1st, and is marked with parades, carnivals, barbecues and fireworks.

The United States also celebrates its break from the reign of Britain in the month of July. On the Fourth of July Americans celebrate this special day with cookouts, parades and of course fireworks. The United States can date their freedom a little farther back in history than Canada ; the Declaration of Independence was finalized on July 4, 1776

Regardless of where you are from, I hope everyone enjoys these upcoming special holidays with a safe and enjoyable celebration.

Applying For A Home Loan

Monday, June 27, 2011

Just about everyone hopes to someday own their own home, but the ability to get a home loan has recently become that much harder. However, it is a far cry from impossible for those who have steady jobs and good credit. As most Americans know about five years ago the banks were giving out loans to whoever applied, regardless of whether or not the person receiving the loan was going to be able to pay it back. Therefore, our country is now experiencing a dip in the housing market. Many homes are selling for a fraction of what they are worth while others sit unclaimed due to foreclosure. It is not guaranteed that the housing market will completely turn around or be as good as it once was, but there are signs of improvement in some states. However, states such as California , Florida and Nevada continue to suffer.

The good new is if you want to buy a house, can get a loan and can afford to pay for a house you are more than likely going to get a great deal. Here are a few things to consider when getting a home loan:

1. Know your credit score- If you know your own credit score before you apply for a loan you will not have to worry over whether or not you will qualify.

2. Do not bite off more than you can chew- Despite the banks cracking down on who is eligible for a loan, you will be surprised to learn that if you have good credit and are employed the bank will give you a good amount of money towards your home purchase. However, the bank does not take into consideration the other things you buy and pay for with your income. So, be sure to plan your own budget and only borrow what you can afford.

3. Do not lie- If you think lying on your home loan application will guarantee you get the loan, you are sadly mistaken. The truth will always come out in the end. By lying you are only showing you are not trustworthy, which decreases your chances.

These are just a few things to consider when applying for a home loan. It is a good idea to find a bank you can trust and has a good standing name to work with. If the bank you find has knowledgeable employees that you can trust you are bound to get the right loan for your situation.

5 Ways to Reduce Your Auto Insurance Expenses

No one likes paying for insurance however it can protect you financially if you’re involved in an accident. But, many drivers experience difficulty trying to find affordable car insurance options. Here are five tips to help you save money:

1. Compare Auto Insurance Rates Online

The easiest way to save money on car insurance is to compare rates online. Most auto insurance companies have online insurance quote forms. These easy-to- use forms will help you find the best-priced premium for all of your auto insurance needs.

2. Ask About Discounts

Once you find out which auto insurance company offers the lowest premium, you should call to discuss your quote. Verify if you qualify for any additional auto insurance discounts. Students with a strong academic record may qualify for a discount. You can also get a discount on car insurance if you pay your premium in advance instead of monthly payments.

3. Purchase Multiple Insurance Policies from the Same Company

Some insurance companies offer discounts to customers who purchase more than one insurance policy. If you own two vehicles, insure them both through the same company. Homeowners should also consider getting car and homeowners insurance through the same provider. This can save them a significant amount of money.

4. Drive Safely

Having a clean driving record makes you eligible for the lowest rates. Drive safely, avoid tickets, and watch your insurance premiums get lower. If you have a good driving record, make sure your insurance company takes your history as a driver into account when calculating your insurance rates.

5. Increase Deductibles

Increasing your deductibles from $500 to $1000 will lower your rate. Keep deductibles affordable as this is how much you will pay in the event of a claim.

Sunday-June 26

Sunday, June 26, 2011

I had good intentions to do a post yesterday but the day just got away. Erika and I went to the petting zoo yesterday to visit Ria,( my other daughter who runs the zoo here in town), and to visit the bunny we had looked after before it went to the zoo.The bunny sure is getting big but Ria said she had become territorial with her cage and just feeling "grouchy" the other day.She even took a nip at one of the workers. I had no problems with her when I was there and even was holding her for a while.

Also good news today is that the postal strike in Canada has come to an end.The workers have been legislated back, so it will be a few days till things start rolling again, but it's been about 2 weeks without mail and we're tired of this!It will be nice to get mail again. I have some review items that have been sitting and not been able to come through as well.Very frustrating.

We got a hail storm yesterday so Gerry was thinking some of our garden that we had just put in would be runied, but I was trying to be positive by telling him it would be okay. Will just have to wait and see I guess. Most of the plants we planted were grown in the greenhouse indoors, with the exception of the lettuce. We found the seed afterwards and just planted direct outdoors, but that it already coming up.And how is your garden growing?

Have been making a bit of money off of Facebook by advertising on our local "classifieds", so getting rid of alot of things, and others getting a bargain at the same time.We still had planned another garage sale in August but will see what happens and how much we have left to sell after selling it like this.Almost daily we have had people stopping by since my daughters both sell on here, we do, and we have some of the family's disgards to sell.

Have a great upcoming week everyone!

Now Available in Canada: Chex Gluten Free Cereal

Did you know that one in every 133 Canadians suffers from Celiac Disease and 71% of Canadians are searching out gluten free options at the grocery store? We seem to be hearing more and more about people that have intolerances and food allergies everyday. It's in magazine articles and you see it in the grocery stores: gluten free, lactose free, nut free, etc..My girls can eat anything, but Gerry and I aren't so lucky. I'm sure I may have lactose intolerance and always have to be careful with what I eat.I even have used the gluten free products with many of our reviews just because I feel it's good to eat healthier as we are so sensitive to foods.

We recieved General Mills cereals- Honey Nut and Rice Chex Gluten Free Cereal to test. Both of us preferred the Honey Nut as it had a sweeter taste over the Rice Chex.
Chex Gluten Free cereal can now be found in the cereal aisle and provides a flavourful option to breakfast, lunch, snack time and dinner, with great gluten free recipes to help you get back into eating again!

Why You Can't Afford Not To Have Flood Insurance

Wednesday, June 22, 2011

In recent years, natural disasters have wreaked havoc on several areas of the United States and the world. Tornadoes, Hurricanes, and Flooding have all left hundreds, even thousands, homeless and without shelter. Whereas tornados and hurricanes usually occur in more specific regions, floods are less predictable since all that is required is rain.

If you think you are immune to flooding in your area, think again. According to FEMA and the National Flood Insurance Program, flooding is the most frequent and costly natural disaster facing the United States. To protect your home and the cherished possessions in it, you must consider flood insurance.

Even if you have insurance for another natural disaster, such as an earthquake, if flooding occurs as a result of the earthquake, you may not be covered.
Since, in most cases, flood insurance is not covered under most homeowner’s insurance policies, it may need to be bought separately. You can do this through the government run National Flood Insurance Program.

Steps to acquire flood Insurance

Visit the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) Website : http://www.floodsmart.gov/
Complete the flood risk profile

This is a tool will rate your vulnerability to flooding based off your location. Your flood property’s risk will be either high or moderate to low. The higher the risk is, the more expensive the policy.

Find an agent in your area

You cannot purchase flood insurance directly from the government, it must be purchased from an insurance agent in your area. You will do a quick search through your zip code.

Contact an agent

After finding an agent in your area, give them a call to discuss rates and premiums. Flood Insurance policies can be purchased for your home, apartment, or business. Prices are likely influenced by your flood risk. Premiums for a specific area do not usually vary by agent.

If your area has never experienced a flood, you may think that flood insurance is a waste of money, but not having flood insurance will be more costly and time consuming to recover from. Remember no one is immune from flooding. Where there is rain there could be flooding.

Even just an inch of rain can cause severe damage to your home. Be prepared with flood insurance.

Update: Kitchen Makeover

Tuesday, June 21, 2011

Back in February, Gerry painted our kitchen a light green.I really thought it would be a good color, but even by June, it hadn't grown on me, so we repainted. We all like the brown much better.
Now if we can only update the cupboards- but with them being pressed board, they can't be painted. So till we come up with something economical, they'll stay this way, but they are dated and showing wear.
The kitchen counter tops you may remember were also redone by Gerry with a granite finish that we also reviewed. Slowly, it comes together.

Update: Workshop Photo

The workshop is still work in progress but Gerry has done a great job so far!

Tommorow Is the First Day of Summer

The weather has finally warmed up and it is just about time to mark the first day of summer. While some may complain about the heat, I personally enjoy all there is to look forward to in the summer months from barbecues to lazing around outdoors. Summer is a great time to enjoy the outdoors with friends and family by having a picnic or cookout, and with all the fresh and yummy foods available in the summer how could anyone not have a good time. I also enjoy heading to the lake on those really nice days, and having a picnic. I hope you have some great plans for the up coming summer months, and do not forget to celebrate June 21st.

Review: Unotron Washable Keyboard

Today I recieved my Unotron Spill Seal, washable keyboard.Erika was quick to set it up for me, and I really like it.What I like the most is the raised keys that are nicely separated and make typing easier with less mistakes.Trust me, all keyboards are not all created equally- and I always thought they were.

Another plus to this keyboard is that they can be safely cleaned with water and disinfectants to prevent the spread of germs, bacteria and viruses. Unotron keyboards feature hermetically sealed casings that prevent solid matter and fluids from entering the keyboard where they cannot be flushed out. Having a Unotron keyboard can prevent messy situations from becoming disastrous. These are great keyboards for anyone with little children or for those of us who like to eat and drink at our computers and have tended to have more than one accident.

Find one for yourself at any one of these locations.

The Importance of Sunscreen

I sometimes think it is the false belief of many sunbathers across the globe that if you wear sunscreen you will not tan. However, this belief could not be any farther from the truth. Rather than completely blocking the sun’s rays from your skin the ingredients in sunscreen work to dissipate and scatter ultraviolet radiation that causes skin burns and other skin damaging effects. Luckily, we are becoming more health conscious as a society and realizing the importance of sunscreen. It is also important to keep in mind that sunscreen is not just for the beach. Anytime you are outdoors maybe working in the garden or at a ballgame, even on an overcast day, you being exposed to ultraviolet radiation from the sun, so it is of the upmost importance to always wear sunscreen.

Our sponser for sunscreen: Coppertone-

Who tells us: "When outside with your family, it’s extremely important to make sure that you are protected from both UVA and UVB rays. Make sure to purchase a “broad-spectrum” sunscreen which will keep your family safe from UVA rays, which cause premature aging and UVB rays which cause your skin to burn. It’s also essential that you cover up not only with sunscreen but with protective clothing, hats, sunglasses and umbrellas."

Happy Father's Day, Dads!

Sunday, June 19, 2011

To all the dads out there today- have a wonderful Father's Day. Enjoy time with your families.
We'll be ordering in Chinese food for supper today,my treat-( something Gerry likes but we rarely go). I'll have something else as I don't eat Chinese. Both girls having supper in as well with us. Had the weather been nicer, we would have had a bbq.A few gifts as well will be in order to celebrate a great guy!
What do you have planned for today with your family?

Saturday-June 18

Saturday, June 18, 2011

Our weather has not been the greatest lately, and we are due for a week of rain as well. It came down in absolute buckets last night and woke me up.Although I still love the sound of rain on the house when your going to sleep. This weather has put a slow down on my walking as well, so I have to resort to reading while I ride the exercise bike indoors,( one I got a few years back at a garage sale for only $20).I wish I had a treadmill but have not been able to find one, used, at a price I'd feel comfortable with.I'd love to try to get one for this winter though, if one happens to find it's way to me.

On another note, I wanted to ask any of my readers out there if they use a breadmaker and what they think of it? I'm not talented enough to make my own bread, but I'm thinking of a breadmaker. I have food intolerances and the only bread I have found so far that isn't too bad , is sourdough bread. But it costs $2.85 a loaf! Most bread has milk in it and I'm not sure if this one does but it's one of the ones that least likely bothers me as much.Do you use milk in breads in a breadmaker?
I'd like to hear from anyone about theirs they may use. As well, is it economical or do you have to use a special flour that costs more than regular flour?

Work continues on Gerry's shop, and we're seeing that the cost has grown to more than what he had originally said. He may be just wrapping the outside this year though and finishing it up next year with his company's yearly bonus. With being busy with building the workshop, putting in the garden has taken a step back, but he's hoping to get it in soon.

We do want to get married this year and had plans to go on a short cruise to Key West and get married there.( I know I could do it"cheaper" but it's my wedding after all, I'd like to do something nice and memorable). If you've been there, I'd love to hear from you. We've never cruised before. That's in the plans for late Fall. Then Erika will be taking her second year of business this year, and we will have to put out half the money for that as well.( Her dad will pay the other half.Gerry is her step dad). She is hoping to take it while living at home this year. She has plans to do her 4 years to become a certified accountant.

Looks like it's almost lunch though, so I'll have to close here.
Hope you all have a great weekend.

June Is National Iced Tea Month

Thursday, June 16, 2011

Nothing quite says summer like a cold glass of iced tea. So, it makes sense that the same month that celebrates the first day of summer also honors summer’s staple drink. This drink has become so popular it can be purchased already bottled or even in a powder form to then be mixed with water. However, some of the best iced tea is almost always homemade. In fact, summer is a great time to brew your tea in the sun and make a summer favorite known as sun tea. If you are drinking iced tea in the south, you are probably drinking sweet tea, which is usually made sugary, sweet with the use of simple syrup. Additionally, iced tea has even advanced to being flavored with fruits such as lemons, peaches and raspberries. However you enjoy your iced tea be sure to grab a glass this month to celebrate this summer favorite.

Be sure to also visit our sponsers who have their own brands of great iced tea they'd like you to try this summer:

-Honest Tea-The perfect way to celebrate national iced tea month. Honest Tea offers a wide variety of teas with a number of offerings, that are just the right amount of sweet with not too much sugar.

-Cumberland Farms-Just in time for summer, Cumberland Farms will be giving away free servings of its new, thirst-quenching iced tea for the next three Fridays in June – June 10, June 17 and June 24 Every other day, freshly brewed iced tea is just 99 cents, any size.

-Lipton Iced Tea-Lipton Iced Tea has unveiled a new 100% Natural line featuring a simple, all-natural ingredient list, which includes the finest-quality Lipton tea, real sugar and natural flavors with no preservatives, no artificial colors and no artificial flavors. Book Review:Better Homes & Gardens :Quilt-Lovers' Favorites: From American Patchwork and Quilting, Volume 4

Review by: Cynthia (my mom)

The fourth inspiring volume in the popular Quilt Lovers Favorites series
Including step-by-step instructions to guide quilters of all skill levels, this book includes traditional quilt designs for home decor and accessories; patterns for wall hangings, lap throws, pillows, baby quilts, table runners, valances, and more.

I would give this book a two thumbs up. I can see myself making many of these lovely patterns. It is So easy to get addicted to making your own quilts for gifts or personal use. The fabrics these days are gorgeous, the variety of prints, endless.

Inside this book are 15 beautiful quilts and 32 one-of-a-kind projects. On page 43 is a blue and cream star quilt that I "have" to make, it even has matching pillowcases patterns. The instructions are easy to follow throughout the whole book, the photos are great. The Twirling Patchwork is a striking quilt--three other options are given, making it look entirely different.

There is a special section--Quilters' Schoolhouse---filled with expert advice on rotary cutting, using templates, hand quilting, machine quilting and much more.

If you have friends or family who quilt, this book would make a great gift.

The colorful quilts and related projects in the photos, will call out to you, "make me". A great book for quilters.

Book Review and Giveaway: Money Secrets of the Amish by Lorilee Craker

Tuesday, June 14, 2011

My book on "Money Secrets of the Amish" by Lorilee Craker, arrived at a good time, as we had to make a quick trip out of town yesterday. I love to read while travelling, although it does make me sleepy. This book will certainly keep you interested in reading though.

The book I found was well writen and tells a story of how the Amish people save money and do alot of bartering. Lorilee writes on how the Amish save money and then incorporates her own way of how those of us that aren't Amish, can do their own money make overs and save. Although there were basic ideas here on how to save money, I liked reading about the Amish lifestyle and how everyone in the community works together to save money. It's a very interesting read. After reading this book, I thought even more of how it would be interesting to visit an Amish community. The book really does help you to see how simplicity can add up to savings.

Our sponser would love to give away a copy of one of these books to a lucky Canadian or US reader.A random draw will be held by Random.org on June 28,2011 from all entries recieved.

Today's Quick Tip

Maybe no one wants to be thinking of Christmas in June but maybe you should be. Christmas is only 6 months away and will be here before you know it. Start by saving any small amounts you can. Been walking past those clearance racks? Backtrack- maybe one of those items might be something your niece or nephew would like, or your sister perhaps? Plan ahead.Save money.

Saturday- June 11

Saturday, June 11, 2011

I have had so little energy today, as temps climbed today to at least 26 degrees. Our trailer was feeling muggy so I had Gerry take a break from working on the shed and take the covers off the three air conditioners.I try to use them as little as possible but need to cool it off in here, as I'm feeling wiped.

Gerry was out in the sun most of day, working on the shed. He was in a hurry to get the roof on as it had called for rain tommmorow, but the forecast changed, and now it's not calling for rain. However, at 8:30 pm., he's still out there working away.

That bunch of dirt in front of the shed is where out garden is being planted this year. We also have blueberries and raspberries growing along the fence.I'd love to see the fence get a new paint job, but Gerry said it would need alot of paint and not in our budget right now.We have a few home projects lined up but getting his shed built seems to be priority right now, as he's quite excited about it. I think he'll save the indoor projects for those "rainy days".

I see one of our local grocery stores, the Co-op, has their dollar deals on this week, so I will have to take a look at their flyer. These are always very busy sales day for them- especially when people get something for $1.00.I think that's what I'll take a break to do now, look through the flyer and comb through my coupons as well to see if I can do some double savings.

Have a great week everyone- and hope your enjoying Summery weather, and not living anywhere near places that have been hit by natural disasters.I feel blessed that we have been lucky in all my years living where I live, that we have not had anything like what I see on t.v., happen here. From fires, to floods to tornadoes. Very scary.

Gift Card Store for Dads and Grads

Thursday, June 9, 2011

With Father’s Day and graduation events just around the corner, I was looking for the perfect gift for friends and family.

I was out shopping at my local grocers and voilà, picked up a gift card from Gift Card Store in a convenient one-stop shop! Gift Card Store is located in grocery stores throughout Canada and includes popular gift cards in travel, apparel, entertainment, personal fitness and dining. It’s no wonder a recent study found that 89% of Canadians received a gift card for the holidays and 74% preferred this present over an item from their favorite store. One of my personal favorites is the Marriott Gift Card, which can be applied towards lodging accommodations, in addition to dining, recreation, and spa services at 3,600 Marriott locations in 71 countries! It's the perfect gift - whether it's intended as a surprise family vacation, a weekend getaway for the grads, a few hours at the spa, or a lovely dinner for two! Gift Card Store is a great resource for busy moms. They can pick up a gift while they’re already out shopping at their grocers and a gift card allows the recipient to get what they want, when they want it!

Thursday-June 9

Not sure if you all had heard, but for those not living in Canada, we're having a mail strike here. Let me tell you, I love my mail and find that it HAS been effected.Nothing in today's mail and they are walking the picket line here. Even review products are slow at getting to me, and more companies I think will be making the couriers happy, by using their services, but that's gotta be expensive! What's your take on the mail strike?

For those of you who waited all year for America's Got Talent, it's back! I've really looked forward to each week to have a laugh, cry or "wow" at some of the talent.I love this show!

My daughter Ria started back managing at the petting zoo again this year, so keeps very busy with that. The bunny that we had been keeping here before they opened is there now and has her own cage indoors and out to run around like she loves to do.The zoo usually closes in September so not sure where bunny will go after that.

The other daughter, Erika,is enjoying her new job as a timekeeper at our local mining company. She is a casual. Likes the money but also has a car payment and loan to work on paying from her last year of living in Calgary. She dislikes the tax man taking so much off her cheques though and working in a place with no windows.

Gerry is wanting retirement to come sooner than the 7-8 years he has left.He said with a mortgage and other payments still owing, an early retirement is out of the question. It also means he would lose his benefits, which we currently have all medical and a portion of dental paid for.

I hope your all doing well- I always enjoy reading your comments in the giveaways and welcome any emails always.
