Sunday- July 31

Sunday, July 31, 2011

Wow- the last day of July already. How has your summer been going?

I must admit I don't go out too much in the heat. I'm not a beach person and we don't camp.I do however, like to get out for a daily walk but it's usually early in the morning before it gets hot. I know once I start heating up, those pesty sandflies are all over me.

I've been feeling tired alot too and not sure if it's the weather or my health.I'd like summer more if we had more of a breeze but the humidy gets high and it doesn't feel too pleasant.

Haven't been out blueberry picking yet either this year. The trees we dug up last year and transplanted in our yard didn't grow leaves or berries this year.Gerry said we'll give them one more year to see if anything will happen. I see people selling berries by the bags full on our local buy and sell Facebook, for $20-$25.I had been selling alot of things we had leftover from our garage sale earlier this year, and cleaning out the sheds and garages of what we didn't need. Gerry said everything looks so cleaned out now! It's nice selling what we weren't using though and having money in our wallets every day.I told Gerry that now that he's getting his workshop more completed inside, he can think of making some handcrafted projects to sell with scrap wood. He's talented and there are always people wanting to buy "something".

As for camping, we have camped in the past but I really hate bugs and all we have is tents. That also means getting up at night like I usually have to do and walking through the bush to the bathrooms- and I really don't want to do that anymore in this stage of my life, ( my 45th birthday is coming soon- on the 7th of August, as well, next month will be 2 years that my site has been online).

Gerry has been quite busy renovating around here as well.Working on a few rooms- happy to say, all paid with cash and no charging! Personally , he makes me tired just watching all the work he's been doing!

Hope your enjoying your summer everyone.

Looking For A Fuel Effecient Car?

Saturday, July 30, 2011

The skyrocketing prices of fuel is difficult to ignore. I'm sure you've noticed, a gallon of gasoline cost around $4 in most areas in the United States. Unfortunately, the thought of the cost dropping in the future looks gloomy. To remedy, automakers are manufacturing cars that are both energy efficient, as well as, gas efficient. These type of cars not only save money, but, they are also environmentally friendly.

If you are planning to purchase an energy efficient vehicle, there are several car models to choose from. In contrast to our common notion, green cars are not only limited to Honda Civic Hybrid cars or the Toyota Prius. These days, auto manufactures such as Kia, Hyundai, Nissan, just to name a few, are jumping on the bandwagon by coming out with their own energy saving vehicles.

What should you look for when car shopping, and which gas efficient vehicle model should you select?

First, you need to consider how many passengers the car will have. Secondly, how much are you willing shell out? Most importantly, you need to decide on the miles per gallon (MPG) of the car, whether it is city MPG or highway MPG.

To give you an idea, here are some of the most efficient cars to date, based on their price range, and miles per gallon.

The Kia Forte has a price tag of $15,390. Its miles per gallon is 36 (highway), 26 (city). Next, the Hyundai Accent cost around $13,175 with city MPG of 27, and highway MPG of 36. Another excellent choice is the Ford Fusion Hybrid. It is a bit hefty, costing about $28,240, although style and mpg make up for the price. The Fusion Hybrid gets about 36 mpg on the Highway, and in the city it gest about 41.

If you have some money to spare, you can opt for Nissan Leaf which costs about $32,780. As a bonus you get $7,500 for the electric vehicle credit, thus, bringing the price down to $25, 2850. Both highway and city MPG is 99.

With the rate that the economy is going right now, driving one of these cars will reduce your visits to the gas station. Which will end up saving you a lot of cash.

How To Get A Bargain On A Used Car

Thursday, July 21, 2011

Shopping for a car should be a fun and enjoyable experience. Getting a bargain on that used car will make it even that more rewarding. If you know exactly what you are talking about then there should be no reason to not get a great deal on a used car if you are patient. Taking your time and evaluating all of the different makes and models available will give you the best chance of pulling off a bargain. Regardless of whether you are shopping for a used BMW 3 series or a Hyundai Accent, there are a few things that you can do to put yourself in a good position. If you fail to consider everything when in the market for that car you may walk away feeling like you spend too much, or just didn’t do well regarding the terms of the deal.

The first thing that you need to do in order to get a bargain is know your numbers. It is very important that you know how much the car that you are looking at is worth considering the shape that it’s in. If you know exactly what the car is worth you will know what to offer in order to get a bargain. How do you do this? By looking at the “comps,” or competitive offerings and seeing what the going price is. Make sure you consider how many miles the car has, the options that are in it as well as the year and condition of the body and interior. If you see a make and model that interests you with low miles and a body that is in good shape you can research it on the internet too. By researching online you will be able to come up with a dollar number on how much the car is worth. The Kelley Blue Book website is a great resource for used car buyers, as is AutoTrader. Another great but lesser-known website to visit is the Used Car Classifieds at the Internet Auto Guide. After visiting, within a few clicks you will be able to plug in the facts about the car you’re interested in on any of these sites and get the value of it. Once you know the value you are prepared to offer a price that would make the car a bargain in your mind.

The next thing that you will need to do in order to get a bargain on a used car is be ready to walk away from the deal. If you are not getting the car on your terms it is not a bargain. You cannot be afraid to call the deal off if the seller gets too greedy. The thing to remember is that with used cars there is usually a good bit of inventory, especially if you’re looking for a very popular car such as a 2005 Honda Civic. You should be able to find more than one in the price range that you need. It may just take a little more work an patience on your part. That said, even after you walk away from a deal that does not mean that it is dead. In fact, after walking away you are likely to get a phone call from the seller with a better offer. If you like the new offer that you hear after walking away you can continue negotiations. If you do not like it then you can just tell them that you are not interested. At this point you would be better off letting them know what the most you would pay for the car is. In the future they will call you if they need to sell it for that number.

The last thing you need to do in order to get a bargain on a used car is to start by offering a very low price. By offering a low price you are leaving yourself a lot of wiggle room to negotiate. Don’t lowball to the point of insulting, but do check out the car and list all the negatives/broken/worn items that you can think of and only THEN start talking price. You will ease them into selling for a lower price this way without getting them defensive. Don’t do it the other way around. If you know that the car that you want should cost around $10,000 then it might be a good idea for you to offer something like $7500. Tell them you’ve seen one around this price. There is a chance that the person selling the car will accept but they will most likely want to get more money out of you. Since you know that the car is worth $10,000 you know that you have a couple thousand dollars to go up in your negotiations. The key, however, is to try and get it for below that $10,000 mark so that you get a bargain. The only way that this is going to happen is if you start low enough.

Looking to buy new instead of used? Research everything you need including MSRP and invoicing pricing HERE. Internet Auto Guide is not so well known but just as good a stop for the car shopper as the other big names.

Have You Heard About Card Swap?

A gift card would seem to be the perfect gift. The person receiving the gift may go buy whatever they like, but at a specific stored picked by the giver. This all seems like a good idea, however many gift cards go unclaimed, which means the stores are winning and we as buyers are losing out. All our friends or family end up with is a plastic card, and where is the fun in that?

There are a few problems with gift card, which make them less than the perfect gift. For one, if the giver does not know the stores the receiver shops, than the receiver may end up with a gift card to a store they never shop at. Second, these tiny plastic cards can become lost or hidden in the back of ones wallet. Finally, the receiver always ends up paying more than the card is worth, which makes it less of gift and more of an expense.

However, as long as these trendy little cards are around people will be giving them as gifts, but luckily there is a solution to using any unwanted gift cards. There is now a pretty nifty website called Card Swap that allows you to buy, sell and trade gift cards.

This site pretty much does it all when it comes to gift cards. I’m impressed with the site and the convenience it provides. Not only does it allow you to purchase gift cards, to stores you want to shop at, but it allows you to purchase those cards at a discount. Additionally, this site allows you to trade in any unwanted gift cards for cash. So, if you have any gift cards to stores you will not be shopping at you can get 90% of the cash value back. This means gifts no longer go to waste, and you will not be forced to spend more at the store when your purchase total is higher than that of the gift card. The site also offers other features, such as the option to donate unwanted gift cards to charity. I will definitely be using this site in the future for both buying and selling gift cards.

A Wicked Storm

We had a wicked storm here last night. We were woken up around 4:30 am to about half an hour or more of sheet lightening that just went on and on. Terrible blowing rain as well that we could barely see out our window. I was happy there was no damage to our property and that my computer, was still working this morning, although we had no power for quite a few hours. In all my years and Gerry's, we had never seen a storm so bad.

Sharing some photos he took this morning when he took a drive around the neighbourhood.

Labour is free as Gerry does his own work. Siding for that outside wall, he had saved from 8 years back from another project. Savings of $80

Changing Your Life Up To Save Up

Almost every person that has taken a breath talks about how they don't make enough money or have a difficult time getting by, yet, it's also true that there are many ways that we can cut costs by making simple changes. Some of these changes are difficult to enact, especially if they're a luxury item that you've grown accustomed to viewing as a necessity. Through a little self-examination, you can slash your expenses and start to get your financial life in order. Who knows, with the money you save you might even want to invest in getting a degree with an online college at the University of Phoenix or other education programs.

Kicking The Habit:
It doesn't have to be smoking. A habit can be anything from eating out to curing your shopaholic tendencies. For example, many people buy an expensive premium coffee at their local coffee shop in the morning before they head out to work. These premium beverages cost somewhere between 2 to 6 dollars, and this expense up adds up over time into a huge financial loss. Instead of buying coffee each morning, try getting up a few minutes earlier and make it yourself. This is just an example, but it's these types of expenses that we rationalize in our daily lives and convince ourselves that we "deserve" them. Looking at your spending habits and cutting these costs is one of the quickest ways you can save. Who knows, you might even be able to pay a couple bills with the money you're saving.

Comparing Prices and Using Coupons:
People like to buy things on impulse. Much of the market encourages this behavior, but if you're like most Americans, after you've purchased an item, you quickly learn that the item you've bought isn't the wonder product that you thought it was. Taking a smarter and more responsible approach to your spending habits is an essential step in the saving process. Look at online product reviews to not only see what other people are saying, but find the best prices online. You can also find coupons and coupon codes online that will get you a discount towards the purchase if you really feel that you need the product.

Self-Analysis:
This is perhaps the best example of cutting spending habits and making your dollar stretch a little further each month. We often confuse "want" with "need." We do this in a myriad ways, such as the premium coffee example above. Most of our purchases, besides necessities and bills, are motivated out of a rationalization on the part of the consumer. We tell ourselves that we somehow deserve something or that we need it to get by. This is, at the very heart of the matter, a rationalization in and of itself. If you think you might be doing this in your daily life, before you head to the checkout lane or click that, "confirm purchase" button, ask yourself, do I need this to get by? You'd be surprised at how much you can get by without, and although you might not have the latest and greatest gadget or toy, you'll be much better off at the end of the month when you're balancing your checking account.

It's important that people start to view their finances more responsibly. The last decade has been difficult on the average consumer that has shown to have a severe addiction to credit debt. Investing in a cappuccino maker is not, under any circumstances, the same as investing in online degrees. Look at the way you're spending as see where you could be doing things differently. It may be difficult, and even personally painful at times, but it's a necessity nonetheless.

Renovating Again

Just wanted to share some pictures of our home once again.
What once was just a wall from the outside, is now going to become a door onto our back deck.On the inside there was a storage closet, where Gerry is standing in the picture.
We currently have unusable patio doors in Erika's room that used to get us out onto the deck. In a few days, Gerry will be getting rid of those as well and replacing the doors with a smaller window.
I had to get him to hang up a sheet of plastic on the inside as we were getting bugs in here and I HATE bugs in my house.

Review and Giveaway: The Madeline Chocolate Company

We never like to pass an opportunity up to review chocolate in our house as who doesn't LOVE chocolate??

The Madeline Chocolate Company was established in 1949, and have dedicated themselves to perfecting the superior tasting and quality chocolates. They really have! Their chocolates are so smooth tasting. They use fine ingrediants to make their chocolates and the finished products are nicely presented- with most of their chocolates wrapped as well in a quality Italian foil. They sell everyday chocolates as well as chocolates for special occasions. It is REALLY hard to limit yourself to eating these when they taste soooo good. Trust me, they aren't your regular box store chocolates, but can be found in selected retailers as well as online.

Chocolate for the senses

Of course, once you bring home your chocolate, you can use all five senses to determine the quality – if this is a chocolate you’re going to buy again.
1.Savor the aroma
The moment the product is unwrapped, a strong chocolate fragrance will waft through the air to the delight of your sense of smell.
2.Hear the “snap”
Like the crack of a bat hitting a home run or a tennis racquet serving an ace, the chocolate should snap when you break it or bite into it. That’s the sound of a true high quality chocolate product.
3.Feel the texture ("Mouthfeel")
Chocolate melts at 97°F. Its melting point is so close to that of the human body, it begins to melt the moment you place it in your mouth. That velvety texture you enjoy is the result of the chocolate melting evenly, without any lumps or graininess.
4.Taste the full-bodied flavor
The rich, chocolatey flavor of gourmet chocolate cannot be duplicated. No wonder it has been referred to throughout history as “the food of the gods.” No wonder more chocoholics are born every day.
5.Enjoy the afterglow
Premium chocolate leaves a pleasant, mellow taste. Solid, hollow, combined with other flavors, it is a delicacy to be savored.

Review and Giveaway: Enjoy Life Foods

Enjoy Life Foods has a purpose. That is, making good foods that keep people's insides happy, too, and our family are all now big fans of theirs.

Both Gerry and I suffer from food intolerances and troubles with digesting certain foods, for one reason or another. Now we don't believe we have actual food allergies but there are some things we eat that our tummies just don't like.So many of our foods have so many unknown ingrediants to us though, that is it any wonder?Their products are gluten free and made without 8 of the most common allergens- plus they taste great! We've almost gone through all of samples-especially their double chocolate chip and double chocolate crunch cookies. They do however carry a complete line of not only cookies though, but baking products, cereals, and so much more.I can't wait to try more of their products.

I came across Enjoy Life Foods after looking for a more healthier cookie to eat, and so glad I found Enjoy Like Foods. They can be found at local retailers or you can shop directly online for them.

A big thank you to Enjoy Life Foods for giving us this opportunity to review a superb product that we are happy to tell our readers about.

Enjoy Life Foods would love to give away to one of our lucky Canadian or US winners, 2 boxes of your favorite flavour of their Crunchy Cookies.

Keeping the Heat Out Of the Kitchen This Summer

It is now the middle of July which means our air conditioners are running at full force. The last thing we want to do on a lazy, hot summer day is make the house hotter or have the AC work harder by using the stove or oven. Luckily, summer provides the perfect opportunity for cooking outdoors. The grill offers a great way to cook many of the foods we love, and leaves them tasting great. Another option is to forgo cooking all together and eat everything fresh. Summer provides us with some of the best fruits and vegetables that taste great raw. Eating fresh, chilled vegetables and fruits, such as tomatoes and watermelon, will not only save your house from the heat, but will also make yourself cool.

Our friends also share their sites that offer ways to keep the heat out of the kitchen:

Netflix Raises Prices: Keep Your Cash With 8 Alternative Options

Thursday, July 14, 2011

Attention streaming movie marathoners: There are major changes coming your way. This month Netflix announced they'll be increasing their plan pricing. The trend of rising prices for streaming content is a growing one. Cell phone providers like Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile are all planning to eliminate unlimited data plans in favor of tiered pricing. With experts predicting most cell phone users won't be hit by the changes for a few years, Netflix is taking most of the heat.

The Netflix Changes
Here are the basics of the Netflix changes. Instead of having DVD rentals and streaming movies priced together, each portion will be priced as a separate plan. For most users, this will increase the monthly bill by $6-10. Price changes will take effect September 1.

Customer Backlash
Understandably, cash-strapped consumers are not thrilled about price increases. The official blog post announcing Netflix's changes has generated more than 12,000 comments. Most appear to be current subscribers pledging to cancel their subscription.

More Than the Price
On the surface, $6 doesn't seem like an outrageous amount, but customers are hurt about more than the money. Many who've been with Netflix from the start feel their loyalty has been betrayed. Disgruntled loyalists would like prices to stay as they are for current subscribers with increased rates only for new subscribers.

Not Enough Bang for the Buck
Another customer gripe is that the product doesn't justify the higher price. Subscribers have complained the streaming movie selection is lacking. They contend new material is not added often enough and many times the streaming video quality is poor.

Switching to the Competition
The price increases by Netflix are encouraging many users to give the competition a try. Redbox is one of the most popular alternatives, with $1 rentals and locations in just about every neighborhood. Amazon Instant Video is another popular choice. Streaming new releases are typically $3.99 to rent for a 48 hour period.

Price Increase Reasoning
Even though Netflix subscribers are in an uproar, the company isn't entirely to blame. When Netflix started their streaming service, studios who own the movies didn't realize the potential for profits. With the surge in streaming media popularity, studios want to charge a premium for their content. One expert has predicted Netflix's content licensing costs will increase from $180 million in 2010 to $1.98 billion in 2012.

If you don't want to pay these increased costs, here are a few alternatives to help you keep your cash.

DVD Exchange With Friends
Do you have a shelf full of DVDs you just can't bring yourself to watch again? Get a few friends or co-workers in on a movie exchange. Trade movies one for one and trade back when you're all done watching.

Rent From the Library
With the demise of local video rental stores, finding releases from a few years back is growing increasingly difficult. Renting movies from the library can help you track down many titles not available from Redbox. Even better, the rentals are free!

Discount Gift Cards
Going to see a movie in the theatre isn't exactly a steal, but there are some ways around high prices. Popular cinemas like AMC and Regal both have more than 100 discounted gift cards available at GiftCardGranny.com.

Matinee Movies
If you work a 9-5, matinee movies may be out of your reach, but they make for another way to beat high prices. Tickets cost much less and you don't have to deal with the massive crowds you find in the evening.

Neighborhood Movie Night
Consider going in with a group of neighbors and investing in a backyard movie set-up. Hopefully, someone already has a projector they're willing to share. All you need then is a screen. Inflatable, outdoor projection screens can easily be found online for less than $200. This tip might not save a ton of money, but it can help a whole group of people stop paying their money to Netflix.

Free Screenings
Plenty of filmmakers just want their movie to get seen. College campuses are great resources for finding free screenings. Many towns also offer free showings of classic films at parks throughout the summer. A local paper is a good way to find out if there are any offerings in your area.

Get Outside
The natural world was here before streaming Netflix and it will certainly be here long after. Take the money you'd spend on movies and invest it in a national parks pass. The cost is only $80 for one year and it gets you and anyone in the car with you into more than 2,000 sites across the country.

Dial Into Daily Movie Deals
Deal of the day sites like Groupon and LivingSocial occasionally offer discounted movie theater tickets for as little as $2 per person. That's a pretty cheap movie night outing and well worth the price. Just make sure to skip the popcorn and candy -your wallet and waist will thank you.

American Payday Loan Law Awareness

For those living on limited income and/or trying to raise a family from paycheck to paycheck, credit options are few and far between. Credit with reasonable APR requires good credit history, and good credit history only exists as a result of fulfilled credit repayment. It's a cycle that most working class families can't get out of, and the options available to them are not only limited, they're risky. High interest loans like payday advances and title loans can assist such families, but on the whole they're incredibly interest-laden, sometimes as high as 450% APR.

But the laws regarding high interest loans vary from state to state. For example the car title loans California lenders offer come with stipulations that are drastically different from the ones lenders in New Jersey or Texas can offer. There are four distinct ways states have chosen to go about handling payday loans and other high interest advances. One is to do nothing or close to nothing to regulating such loans. Another option is to ban such loans outright. Yet the majority of states have chosen to either regulate the APR or the amount that can be lent out at any given time.

New Jersey law, for example, states that lenders can't give out loans in excess of $2500 at any one time if it falls under the high interest category. As of 2011, Maryland has completely banned title loans. States such as New York, Washington, Tennessee, and Georgia have APR limits in place on payday and title loans. Yet 18 states, including Maine, North Carolina, Mississippi, and Alabama, all have no laws regarding the limit of interest rates or loan amounts that payday lenders can provide borrowers.

States that require APR limits vary in that limit. Some have conservative APR limits close to most extreme credit card interest rates such as 25%, which essentially makes the payday loan business in that state a non-profitable business. Others, however, such as Tennessee, have "limits" in the 450% range. It's important that those who ever consider taking out a title loan or other high interest credit line make sure they understand the extent of these "limits" in their respective states.

Lines of credit are incredibly limited when your income is limited. It's the way it should be, to some extent, since borrowers should always have an easy and/or anticipated way to pay their loans off in full. But when a line of credit is necessary, for whatever reason, many turn to high interest loans. Those that do must be aware of the laws in their individual state. Otherwise they could end up paying a crippling price.

Cooking potatoes for potato salad? Do you find they always turn black in spots once you let them cool? Want them to look nice and bright white?

Drain the water after they cook. Add some cool water to them with a tblsp or two full of vinegar to the water.Let sit less than 5 minutes and drain again. This will prevent them from getting those grey and black spots.

Review and Giveaway ( US Only): Glee Gum

I will say, I like chewing gum,but over the years had had to stop chewing it because companies started adding aspartame and such to it.I'm not a fan of anything with aspartame in it,because of the way my stomache relates to it and all the negative I read about it.

I tried regular bubble gum but was having problems because of the high fructose corn syrup in alot of them.

If your having similar problems or feel the way I do, you may want to try a gum called Glee Gum.Glee Gum not only tastes good but it's clean chewing, so that means:
-all natural ingrediants- no artificial colors, flavors or preservatives. No aspartame and no high glucose corn syrups either!
It's made the old fashioned way and made in the USA!

The only thing I had wished for was a longer lasting flavour but I really loved their gum and found the bubble gum to be my favorite.

They also make a sugar free type that is sweetened with 100% xylitol.

So to wrap it all up in their words:

Glee Gum is all-natural, gluten-free chewing gum with no artificial coloring, flavoring, sweeteners nor preservatives. Glee Gum is the only gum in North America made the old-fashioned way, with chicle! Chicle is a natural tree sap harvested sustainably from the rainforests of Central America. Once all chewing gum was made with chicle, but today most gum is made entirely from synthetic stuff. Not Glee Gum! Glee Gum uses chicle because it is an eco-friendly way to help conserve the rainforest. Chicle is also what gives the gum such great, long-lasting chewing texture! Glee Gum is a “green” gum right down to the packaging, which is made from biodegradable, recycled cardboard. So chew with Glee, naturally!

Glee Gum would love for one of our readers the opportunity to try their gum too and have offered a Mini Glee Variety pack (21 4-piece) & a coupon to 1 winner from the USA.
A random draw will be made by Random.org on July 25,2011 from all entries recieved.

Pay Your Electric Bill And Recieve Rewards

Monday, July 11, 2011

As a step to both reduce our carbon footprints and to save money around the house, many people are choosing to turn their thermostats down during the winter and up during the summer. There's no doubt that reducing the use of utilities can increase the money left over in your pocket at the end of each month, but very few people actually think that just paying their utilities can provide perks aside from keeping their home comfortable and water running.

Energy Plus Company is one company creating new initiatives to help people not only reduce their energy consumption, but to reward them for doing so. By signing up with the company and making sure to pay their bills on-time, customers can receive numerous perks including:
• Airline Miles
• Hotel Points
• Cash Back
• Education Savings

What's great about this initiative provided by Energy Plus is that there is no catch. The prices for energy are competitive, and users choose to receive whichever incentive they desire and earn them simply by doing something that they already do each month - pay their electric bill.

As part of a growing movement to create more efficient homes, Energy Plus, in addition to several other energy companies, offer free energy audit services as well. A homeowner can have an energy audit performed on their home to ensure that it is as energy efficient as possible. Prior to having an energy audit down, however, there are a few inexpensive tasks homeowners can do to better their home's efficiency. A few include:

• Weather stripping windows and doors
• Caulking both outdoors and indoors
• Replace traditional light bulbs with fluorescent bulbs

In addition to providing energy audits to reduce carbon footprints, Energy Plus also supports the development of wind energy technologies - which is one of the cleanest energy forms available. Customers can sign up for an additional program, which does cost a few cents extra, to not only support wind energy, but to also have their homes benefit from it as well.

Currently, Energy Plus only offers service in the U.S. However, due to the growing popularity, those interested can expect the company to broaden its service range in the United States, and possible expand to Canada. The company currently does most of its business in the New England region of the U.S.

8 Easy Strategies to Organize Your Kitchen

In just about every home, the kitchen is the room that receives the most traffic. With more traffic, comes more mess; the larger family, the larger the mess! Thus, one struggle that many families battle with is keeping the kitchen clean and organized. Keeping the busiest room in the house in order is not as tough as you think. Some strategies will take a little more time than others to complete, but the reward of a freshly tidied kitchen will be well worth the effort. Additionally, you can earn some money with a little extra work!

Bring organization to your kitchen cabinets with the following eight steps!

1. To streamline your kitchen activity, put dishes and other items in cabinets close to where they will be used. For example, cups should go by the refrigerator or sink and baking sheets near the oven. This sounds simple, but the idea does evade some people’s minds. The advantage of this strategy is lowering the amount of effort it takes to accomplish a task and decreasing work times when cooking and preparing meals.

2. On a related note, if you have children who are able to help themselves to food and drinks, but are not old enough to use adult size dinnerware and flatware, put their special dishes in an area within their reach. This will allow them to be able to fix their own snacks and complete simple tasks without your assistance. This is a good way to teach them about personal responsibility!

3. Families often have dinnerware used every day and some only used for special occasions. It is wise to separate the special and everyday dinnerware and flatware. The special items can be placed in less accessible areas because of their less frequent use. On the other hand, the everyday items should be placed near their usage areas.

4. Kitchen items that are not used very often at all, like cookie cutters or specific-use appliances, can also be placed in spots that area less accessible. For example, cabinets or drawers above the refrigerator, below the stove, or the tops of shelves are great places for these items.

5. Try to free up as much space as possible. This will allow you to stay organized and remain clutter free. Go through your kitchen items and sort what you do need from what you do not. Obviously having 36 drinking cups is a bit too much. So, keep one set in addition to a couple of your family’s favorites. Also, decide what countertop appliances are absolute necessities. The toaster, blender, and coffeemaker are the dominant countertop appliances and nothing else in the kitchen replicates their function. Others, like a popcorn maker, quesadilla maker, or Panini press, may be unnecessary for your family and can be removed.

Unwanted dishes, flatware, and appliances that are still in good shape can be sold at garage sales or on Craigslist. Craigslist has a low learning curve and can be very efficient for getting rid of your unneeded items. You can price these items to sell quickly or to try to sell at their current value. You might think no one wants your items, but you will be surprised. Check what other items are going for in order to help find a correct price point. I found it works best to provide my cell phone number on the site because it is much easier to discuss the details over a phone call than an email.

6. All items in the pantry should be checked and reviewed every few months. Throw away all items that have expired long ago. Normally, items can still be eaten a little past their expiration date so make an effort to eat those items after their discovery. You can try to clear out your pantry by looking for recipes that use a few items that you have large quantities of. An easy goal that provides fast results is to require each family member to eat one or two items out of the pantry per week. In order to save money, make note of what was not eaten. This will alert you to what your family does not want to eat and what you can save from purchasing it in the future.

7. The kitchen countertops and table often end up as a go-to place to set all random mail, papers, and household objects. Keep these areas clean and clutter-free by having designated areas for certain objects. For example, new mail can be placed in a basket instead of strewn across the kitchen table.

8. For commonly used cleaning items, create one designated area to store all items. At my house, we used to have items in the laundry room and under the kitchen sink; this made it a hassle to try to find a required item. Instead, pick one area to store cleaning products so you always know where to easily find them. You can also create a utility caddy that has the basic items in one place: paper towels, rags, window, bathroom, and countertop cleaner, scrub brush, et cetera. With this strategy, you can tackle any messy situation and know that all your tools are within reach.
