Day 5-Orlando

Friday, September 28, 2012

Well, today was our last day in Orlando. We leave tommorow to fly into Saskatoon, before our 6 hour drive home on Sunday.Poor Gerry works Monday morning too. We'll pick up Jake in Prince Albert on Sunday. Poor guy, he'll be so happy I'm sure to see we came back!

Today, on our last day, we visited the Lakeridge Winery and Vineyards in Clermont. It was quite interesting to  take a tour (free) of the machines they use to make wine, watch a short video and as well view the outdoor vineyard from the terrace.Once the short tour was done, we got to sample a collection of about 8 wines that are made at the winery and rate them. It was a first for us to see a winery.

After our winery tour we were off for a side by side Revolution Off Road adventure in Clermont as well. Gerry drove and this too was the first time we road in a side by side. We do have a quad, so Gerry had some experience with driving. We followed a lead driver and went on a 1/2 hour course. It was fun- something different for the both of us.

Tonight we just made it to the Cirque du Soleil Show-La NoubaLa Nouba translates to English as "to party, to live it up," and this theme is evident in the energetic performances, the colorful costumes and the moving live music.
  • La Nouba features a mix of mesmerizing high wire and flying trapezes, stunning acro-gymnastic performances and other dynamic displays of coordination and strength.
The Cirque du Soleil shows are always worth going to, and offer top entertainment. You'll see performers of all types that will make you laugh and awe in wonder of their talents to perform. This is a MUST see show for the whole family. The show is approx 90 minutes.

Tommorow- a day of travel. Good bye Florida!

Revolutionize Your Bathroom

As any real estate agent will tell you, it is the kitchen and the bathrooms that sell a home. Outdated bathroom pieces such as pink tubs, and cracked tiles and old vanities do very little to showcase your home.

Even if you are not thinking of selling your house, a beautiful bathroom gives a home owner a huge sense of pride. Bathroom renovation is not as difficult as we may originally think. There are many products out there that can suit the individual’s sense of style as well as their budget. For example bathroom vanities can be made to look antique like with solid oak and intrigue designs that can suit a century home. However, if you crave a more modern feel, glass, of even man made stone vanities can truly make a bathroom look and feel modern. A good vanity can offer a multitude of storage solutions for the room in the house which can often be packed with various lotions and shampoos, and dozens of other ‘necessary’ items. When choosing a bathroom vanity makes sure that the mirror is made to match the interior.

The small details will be sure to bring a sense of flow to the room and make it shine.

Day 4- Orlando

Thursday, September 27, 2012

Today we were suppose to go to Tampa and see Busch Gardens, but with it being an hour drive there and back, and us having other things to see, we mutually agreed to forego it. It takes a while to drive from location to location around here.

Mid morning we drove to the Boggy Creek Airboat Rides about half hour from where we are staying.GPS got us to our location once again, always  a must when travelling and doing your own driving.

We had a great time on the air boat ride and have checked it off our "bucket lit".
The staff was very nice to us and made us feel welcomed, and this was a great 1/2 hour ride that all ages can take part in.I wasn't too sure on the first and had visions on the boat tipping on it's side as we went around bends, but it was a nice, smooth ride. With the heat as well today, it was nice to be out on the lake.

After leaving from our ride, we went for lunch and then on to Sea World.

We had a great time here but at the end of the day were about to take in the park's last show in the Shamu Stadium and we got a thunderstorm.Unfortunately the show had to be cancelled. We walked back to the parking lot with the rain pouring down upon us and others and man did we get wet!!

On to a new day tommorow, and our last one, before heading back home on Saturday.

Day 3-Orlando

Wednesday, September 26, 2012

I honestly don't know where the day goes, but, usually by the time we get going with our day and are out the door, it's noon. Most of the attractions take about half hour to an hour to get to from where we're at too, and closed at 5 and 6 pm..

Today we spent a better part of the afternoon at Gatorland. More than just alligators though:

At 110- acres, there are thousands of alligators and crocodiles to see, an aviary, breeding marsh with observation tower, petting zoo, nature walk,  gift shop and one-of-a-kind reptilian shows including the Gator Wrestlin' Show, Gator Jumparoo and the Up-close Encounters Show.Very interesting, plus we got to feed,(throw),some real big gators raw meat and have our photo taken near them.I was a bit unsure of that but there were plenty of staff near us and the gators "seemed quite relaxed".

Did a bit of souvenir shopping today too and alot of relaxing- it's hot here in Orlando!! Talk to you all tommorow.

Day 2- Orlando and Area

Tuesday, September 25, 2012

Well, it's the end of another long day. Busy going through emails for the home business, and doing some blogging emails.Gerry's already gone to bed. I'm always the one to bed later and earlier to rise.I think he's been beat from all the city driving, and getting us from one place to the next.Man the GPS sure helps though!
Today we went to Cocoa Beach- about an hour from Orlando. We had our bi-plane ride booked firstly for the day.( I could not believe all the toll booths we had to go through to get there- something we aren't used to seeing but there are alot here.) We met with some of the staff at the Florida Biplanes and with Eric Cappel, our pilot, who gave us a 15 minute ride over the Cocoa Beach and Port Canaveral area.It was a tight fit for Gerry and I up in the front of the plane, and quite windy up in the air, but with our fitted head gear and sunglasses, we faired quite well. The ride a smooth one and Eric was a great commentator. We loved it!
From the plane ride we headed to the Cocoa Beach pier- saw the sunbathers, the surfers waiting for their next waves, some fishermen and tourists like ourselves. Always nice to see and smell the ocean!
We had planned to go to the Brevard Zoo in the area but with it being at one end and us still not yet have gone to the Space Centre, we skipped the zoo, and headed over to the Kennedy Space Centre. Bad thing was, by the time we got there, we learnt they were closing at 5 and it was already 4 .We did take in as much as we could though and it was nice to have been able to visit a place in history.

The Next Best Thing To Making Your Own Halloween Costume

Firstly it’s great to have been invited here to show the visitors of oneincomedollar another method to save money (which is what I do on a full time basis).

Halloween can stretch even the loosest of budgets. Other than making your own outfit (which is still a great option if you have the time) there are only a few options for party goers out there to save a few dollars on costumes. Here are my favorite tips:

Use Coupons for Online Costumes

We receive tons of emails every year asking for advice on how to save on various things, the latest being Halloween. So I went out and hunted for the latest coupon codes for the main online costume stores that ship to Canada. Here is a sample of some of the codes I found:

Description: Get 10% off all orders over $25 with this code at Halloween Express
Code: SAVE10CJ
Expires: Dec 31st 2012

Description: Get 5% off all orders over $50 with this code at Wholesale Costume Club
Code: SAVE5
Expires: Oct 15th 2012

Description: Get 20% off one item at Spirit Halloween
Code: SPOOKY
Expires: Oct 26th 2012

An item of note is that the discounts go steadily up a few days before the kick off of Halloween, but take into consideration delivery times as to avoid disappointment. For more discounts for Halloween and other events see all the latest coupons at Voucher Codes Canada.

Go Second Hand

What you have to remember with costumes is that 9/10 they will be worn once and only once. So why not rent or buy one second hand. There are a multitude of places to rent costumes from (I would still hit the high street for this method), these are usually better quality than the ones you can buy too, however if they are returned damaged the fees can often be hefty. Probably the best bet to find a costume place near where you live is still the yellowpages.

If you think ahead I recommend organizing a costume swap on Facebook (or your social network of choice). Alternatively garage sales are usually a keen stop on the costume hunting tour. An up and coming trend are either swaps or purchases from craiglist (the classifieds website).

Get Creative

Costumes don’t have to be expensive. We don’t all need $400 princess dresses. If you’re looking for a more budget option, or to just enjoy the spirit of it all, why not source accessories to put an outfit together (rather than to sew one yourself or buy a pre-made costume). A quick stop at a make-up counter, a drop in a dollar store and raiding your unused items in a wardrobe can inspire even the most scrooge-like of us. And best of all—as long as you don’t go overboard—a fun and potentially more rewarding costume can be had for as little as $10.

Saving is all about thinking ahead and planning. So why not buy your next costume a few days after Halloween to get the best discounts as stores purge stock?

Share with us your saving ideas for Halloween costumes! Don’t be shy we love sharing photos. And don’t forget to stop by Voucher Codes Canada the next time your looking for a discount and say hi.

Day 1- Orlando

Monday, September 24, 2012

We actually got in late last night- a day of travelling- so not much happened to blog about.
We took a flight with 2 connections- one was 2 hours and another was 3 hours. Very uncomfortable on the 3 hour flight.Seems like there is just so little space on the planes.Gerry and I both had an aching back by the time we had landed and decided then and there we didn't want to be travelling again by air on flights longer than 3 hours. Plus me, I always have to take Gravol- especially with the slight bit of turbulence.I actually take   it regardless..nicer to sleep through most of the flight.

This morning we lost time getting over to Whole Foods as we had major GPS problems- drove around for a good hour before we had to finally give in, go have breakfast and ask for some directions. Our GPS just could not get us there, and we had to rely on good old fashioned advise from the locals. We love shopping at Whole Foods though. It was worth spending time looking for. Good healthy food, and always busy at any location we have gone to.

We got a late start to the day after getting to bed at nearly 2 am. the night we arrived, so didn't get out of here till later, and therefore didn't get over to Epcot like we had planned. Had wanted to see the fireworks display but it just got too late. Did make it to Disney World though and saw as much as we could but our feet were killing us after a few hours, so had to quit. They had it decorated so nice there- all in a Halloween theme. Quite impressed with how much preparation must have gone into that.Quite busy though, even for this time of the year when we thought alot of people would have their children in school. Nicer to go later in the day as well as not as hot for walking around.

Movie Review: The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel

I must say, in all honesty, when I was asked to review the new DVD/Blu-ray release: The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, I wasn't too sure it was a movie I'd be interested in.Gerry and I love our action movies and I put up the wall before I gave it a chance.I thought for sure it was going to be BORING, but it wasn't- it was a GREAT movie and Gerry and I would both recommend it.
There were parts that made us laugh and parts that made you feel for the characters and their own lives/stories. A heart touching story.

We got a basket of goodies along with the movie and it was really neat since alot of the items you see in the basket, were pictured in the movie as well. The basket contained products from both Britain and India- as the movie takes place with characters leaving their homes in Britain to come to live in India.

Gerry and I found it alot of fun to have items that went with our movie- in theme..it really added to the whole experience!

Spice Goddess, Chef Bal Arneson (Food Network and Cooking Channel Canada) checked out the movie and filmed her take on the movie along with her recipe for Butter Chicken…mmmm.

If you don't run out and buy this movie at least be sure to rent it.

Why Student Loans Are Still Worth It

Thursday, September 20, 2012

In the heat of a troubled economy and saturated job market, many future and recent high school graduates have been left to wonder whether the cost of a college education is even worth it anymore. In the past, the prospect of graduating college and immediately finding meaningful employment made the load of student loans easier to bear. But with recent college graduates spending a year or more either under or unemployed, the burden of paying back student loans has increased. However, the importance of a college education actually increases during harder economic times. The following will help you to realize why student loans still are, and will continue to be, worth the effort:

1. To Get a Job, Period

Because there are so many applicants for every job positioning available, there are some jobs that it is almost impossible to even get a foot in the door without a college degree. While in the past, there may have been times where it would be more worth it to seek employment after high school and let your experience speak for itself, employers now are looking for candidates with a combination of experience and a superior education. As the Bachelor's degree has become the new high school diploma, it is more important than ever to, at the bare minimum, earn your undergraduate degree.

2. To Advance Your Career

Even if you can find a decent job without a college education, you will more than likely eventually stumble upon a roadblock years down the road without a degree. Many promotion opportunities are reserved for those with superior educations, so you may find yourself being passed up by less qualified employees if you do not see the importance of obtaining a college education.

3. The Amount You Will Earn Will Dwarf Your Debt

As a high school student, the figures associated with taking out student loans for college may seem immense. But financial programs like Discover can help break the numbers down for you. Once you put it in context, the amount of money you will earn over the course of your career, especially if you have a college education, will make your debt seem like mere pennies in the future.
While it is never a bad idea to plan ahead for your future and manage your costs, taking out a student loan to obtain a college education is not irresponsible spending. It's an investment in yourself. Without a solid college education, you risk getting left behind by your peers in the future.

Trick or Treat? I Say TREAT!

It’s a long held misconception that Halloween is about dressing up in costumes and great fun for kids. In fact the holiday is about treats and chocolate. What other time of the year is it perfectly all right to accept candy from strangers? Halloween is even something that healthy living advocates can get behind, as most of the candy comes in those tiny portion controlled sizes, so that you can have just one...or ten.  This year how about we forget about the ‘tricks’ and focus on the ‘treats’ instead.

Our friends who also love their Halloween treats:
Halloween candy sales grew by 5% in 2011 as families are planning bigger and better Halloween celebrations. More costumes, décor, food, fun and… candy. To help in that effort, Nestlé has announced new Halloween candy novelties and packs that will add to this year’s holiday flair.

Novelty candies are in demand and popular brands and flavors still rank among the most wanted. Spooky Nerds and BUTTERFINGER® Pumpkins offer a nod to the holiday in the brands families know and love. The Ultimate Scream (32 oz.) variety bag features the very best of Nestlé’s chocolate favorites, with fun-size bars of BabyRuth, 100 Grand, Crunch, and Butterfinger, and the Boo Bag! (38 oz.), which contains 60 fun size-bars of Nestlé Crunch, BabyRuth, and Butterfinger.

The Madelaine Chocolate Company-

Their Halloween Chocolate selection appeals to kids and adults. They have bulk chocolates for candy dishes, Halloween themed parties and trick or treating. They also have a large assortment of gift items.

Pumpkins, witches, and even eyeballs are just some of the many Halloween style foils they feature for all different kinds of chocolates ranging from solid milk to crunchy to caramel filled. Yum!

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel on DVD/Blu-Ray Sept 18

Wednesday, September 12, 2012

Snacks and movies are what Saturday nights are made of.

In the near future, we will be pre-viewing 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment's:  The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel on DVD September 18th, at which time we will also be enjoying a British/Indian gift basket to truly enhance our movie experience.

This award winning feature starring Judi Dench, Bill Nighy, Tom Wilkinson, and Maggie Smithfocuses on a group of British retires looking to outsource their golden years to India. However, they find their destination, the Best Exotic Marigold Hotel much less than what they have originally anticipated.

The movie is charming and sweet with subtle humor that will keep the audience entranced in the storytelling. Through their journey the seniors find out that it is never too late to start over again, and that love and surprises can be found around every corner of the world. The movie is said to be a true portrayal of old age and what it can bring. Filled with vivid Indian scenery with bright and vibrant colors it will make any viewer want to back up and outsource their lives to India.

Be sure to watch out for my upcoming review of this film.

Stop Separation Anxiety-Tips From Iams

With summer over, many of us are experiencing a change to the summer routine which often involves the return to school and the end of vacation time. While this can have an impact on all family members, the four legged family members can suffer the consequences as well.

With the return to school, many dogs are now experiencing separation anxiety occurring when their owners leave for the day. Separation anxiety, is not limited to school times, any dog can suffer from it, including my own dog, Jake. IAMS has several great tips which can make the school time transition for your dog easier.

1.       Skip the production – If your pet is giving you the “sad eyes” as you begin to jingle your keys and head for the door, it will be your natural instinct to shower them with love and affection to pacify their separation anxiety. However, for your pet, this only reinforces their emotional state. Instead of putting on a big show, give your pet a simple “See you later!” The same should be done when you return home.

2.       Tire them out – Before heading out for the day, ensure you take your dog on a minimum of a half hour walk, depending on the breed. This will help ensure your pets aren’t antsy while alone.

3.       Stimulate the mind – In the morning, instead of feeding your pet from their regular bowl try using interactive food dispensing toys, which can be found in many major pet stores. Your cat or dog will have to try and figure out how to get the food out. This will not only keep them entertained, but will tire them out for the afternoon.

4.       Kitty and Doggie Daycare/Walkers – Pet day cares and dog walkers are a great alternative to keeping your pets busy and active. Whether you are hiring a walker or leaving your pet in a care center, you must make sure that you trust the people you are leaving your pet with. Do not be afraid to ask questions, check credentials and references.

5.       TV and Music – Music helps calm the body and believe it or not that goes for your pets as well. Tune the radio to a classical station and keep the volume low as dogs and cats have very sensitive ears.

6.       Practice Patience – Getting over separation anxiety can be a big hurdle for you and your pet. For a while, your pet will truly believe that you are leaving forever.  With proper pet parent patience, your pet will soon regain the confidence that you will return. Practice makes perfect!

Walks are always great, but do not forgo the most important part of the day for your pet: playtime. Engage together in fun activities when you arrive back home. This will give your pet something fun to look forward to at the end of each day.

For more pet care tips, remember to visit www.iams.ca or on Facebook at www.facebook.com/iams.

Staying Safe During a Burgulary

Our home is our castle; it is the one place where we should always feel safe. It is therefore very difficult for anyone to imagine someone breaching that feeling of safety. However, with 3.2 million home and vehicle burglaries every year in the United States, it is in fact a very real threat.

There are a number of important things that home owners can do to protect themselves and their home from a potential burglary.

During home robberies situations preparation is key. Discuss with your family beforehand a possible plan of action if this situation was to arise. Remember that most thieves just want your things and not you, so be sure to stay out of their way to avoid harm.

Get into a safe place and promptly dial 911. When calling, make sure to give the authorities your location as well as detailed description of the event. If you are in your bedroom and an intruder walks in, it is often best to pretend to be asleep; therefore you can usually avoid a confrontation.

If you notice an intruder in your home making a little noise, such as dropping a shoe, plate, or even honking the horn, can be enough to scare most intruders as they will realize that your home may not be the quick and easy target that they may have initially anticipated.

Most importantly remain calm and have a few emergency supplies with you, such as car keys, flashlight or even a weapon which can be used to defend yourself and your family if need be. This ideally would be the last course of action, once the authorities have been alerted.

The best way to deal with a potential robbery is to prevent it. There are a number of surveillance and security systems designed to keep you safe. Find one that works for you.

Trust Deeds: What Are They?

Monday, September 10, 2012

Trust Deeds are a means by which individuals can manage their debt if they live in Scotland.
Eligibility for the scheme is he/she must be resident in Scotland. In addition, they must have a level of unsecured personal debt which is at least £10,000. Finally, each candidate must have a full-time or part-time job. Self-employed individuals are eligible. However, they must be able to verify their income, which usually involves submission of the business' financial statements from the prior six months.
A Trust Deed is a formalised legal agreement between debtor and creditor where a regular monthly repayment is made to the creditor. The debtor passes over all their financial details to a trustee, who will act on their behalf. His will include details of income, assets (including property) and expenses.

They are designed for individuals who have taken on too much debt and aren’t in a position to repay it.
The terms agreed will still enable the debtor to manage to pay for household bills and associated living costs.
Interest rates and charges are frozen at the time both parties enter into a Trust Deed.

The agreements have legal backing enshrined in the Bankruptcy (Scotland) Act 1985 and are normally in place for a fixed period of 36-months. After this time has elapsed creditors are obligated to write off the balance of any debt.

The Trust Deed agreement is beneficial to both parties in that it delivers some regular payment to creditors and allows those in debt to be able to function day to day with reasonable provision made for living costs.
The process of drafting a trust deed takes between two and four weeks. The Trust Deed is then handed over to the creditor who may take up to 14 days to decide whether to agree to its terms.

One of the key benefits for those in debt that once a trust deed has been agreed then the creditor is no longer permitted to contact them under any circumstance.

A spokesperson at Trust Deed Scotland commented: ‘At Trust Deed Scotland we can help those in debt reach an agreement with their creditors. Our team of experts are on hand to advise those needing to address their issues of debt.’

Watch for Snow White and the Huntsman on Blu Ray/DVD September 11

Saturday, September 8, 2012

This Tuesday, Sept 11 2012, a retelling of one of childhood favorite fairy tales ”Snow White” is retold “Snow White and the Huntsman” arrives on Blu Ray/DVD combo pack.

In this new retelling, the Huntsman (Chris Hemsworth) is send into the woods to kill the fairest of them all –Snow White (Kirsten Stewart). However, instead of killing her, he becomes the mentor and her protector on Snow White’s Quest to vanquish the Evil Queen (Charlize Theron). The movie also reintroduces the seven dwarfs who aid the young princess on her quest to destroy the Evil Queen.

The movie was very well received in North America as well as abroad. The great cinematography and a gripping darker twist on an old favourite allows the viewers to know what to expect, yet still providing many twists and turns along the way. Out of a classic fairy tale comes a great adventure story which is sure to capture everyone’s attention.

Gerry and I loved this movie. I really like how they remade this child fairy tale into a movie and loved how it seemed to have a medieval times theme to it. A+ movie! Actors and actresses were well chosen for this movie and played their parts quite well.
