Easter Egg Cookies

Sunday, March 31, 2013

When you think of Easter Cookies you probably think of egg shaped sugar cookies decorated in bright colors with sprinkles, zig-zags and polka dots. In fact, this is one of the most common forms of Easter cookies – sugar. They come in eggs shapes, duck shaped, Christmas tree shaped and while I love a good sugar cookie, sometime I just want something more. Each year for Easter me and my two little girls make a variation on the egg shaped sugar cookie that is not only delicious but super fun as well. And best of all this recipe is easy (meaning my two year old can help) in fact, it only has 5 ingredients and most of them you will already have in your pantry – making this the cheapest cookie you will ever make as well. First you need to gather your ingredients:

1 cup butter
½ cup powdered sugar (although you will need a lot more)
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 ¼ cups Flour
¼ teaspoon salt
Granulated sugar (for decoration)
Food coloring (for decorations)
Preheat oven to 400* F

Mix your butter, powdered sugar and vanilla in a large bowl until well blended. Then, mix flour gradually until your dough holds together. You will know your batter is ready when it's the consistency of a finely ground paste, almost like 'Moon Dough' Next you need to separate you dough out into five separate bowls, and add food coloring to each one. We like to use the pastels because they give a nice Easter hue to everything. Once your dough is all colored, start forming your dough into egg shaped balls. You can do them all in one color or blend different colors together into a tie dye like my girls like to do.

Place them on a cookie sheet so that they are about 1/2 inch apart. Bake at 400* F for 10-12 minutes. Once they are done, pull them out of the oven and let them cool for a few minutes on the cookie sheet before transferring them to a cooling rack. To get ready to decorate our cookies we need to color some granulated sugar. Place plain granulated sugar in assorted ziplock bags; give each bag a few drops of food coloring. Shakes, squish, and play with the sugar in the bag until it’s all mixed, this is another great kid activity. Once the sugar is all mixed and colored place the cooled cookies in the sugar and roll them around to coat them. Here is your final product, beautiful jewel bright Easter egg cookies that ALMOST look like real eggs. Enjoy!

Changing the World By Changing How We Shop

Wednesday, March 27, 2013

I love browsing the Internet- you never know what you are going to come across once you start looking.

While looking for money saving tips today, I came across a great site called Save1.com. They have great money saving tips that you can look forward to each week, and some great deals on everyday purchases, things you may only get once in a while and those best deals of the day.

More great news about the site is that when you use a coupon or deal from Save1, they receive a small commission from the store where you make your purchase.  Then Save 1 gives away a portion of the commission they earn to help hungry children.

So you can shop online from any of their many categories, from accessories all the way to your wedding!

The organizations they have selected are among the most credible and respected charities in the world, specializing in feeding hungry and malnourished children. So shop somewhere online where you can help make a difference.

Fatburger of Atlantic City, NJ

Tuesday, March 26, 2013

When we are travelling it is a lot of fun to research places to eat that are “new to us”. When in Atlantic City we will be stopping by a Fatburger franchise. Fatburger is known for their fresh ingredients and made to order meals. It is not very often that you can get made to order hand battered onion rings or a delicious shake.

Fatburgers come in various sizes from small to XXXL, they also offer chicken or vegetarian options. You can also get some fun and unexpected things added to your burger such as an egg, chili or guacamole-this is your chance to truly make this burger your very own.

Fatburger is also known for the great music which is played through its speakers, whether you like rock n’ roll or hip hop, you will love their type of dinner music. We are very excited to try it out and will be sure to tell you all about our visit.

** In Atlantic City, NJ Fatburger is located inside the Borgata Hotel & Casino.

Motel 6 -Saskatoon, Sask.

Before we head out for vacation, we usually spend the night in Saskatoon, as that is where are regular airport is located. This way we offset some of the tiredness that we acquire traveling to Saskatoon before we continue with the next leg of our journey.

Next month when we travel to Philadelphia and Atlantic city we will be staying at Motel 6 Saskatoon. The motel is located close to the airport which is very important to us while travelling. There are some great things included while staying at the Motel 6, including an extended cable package, morning coffee, free wi fi high speed internet throughout the building and an indoor pool and a indoor hot tub. Motel 6 is also pet friendly, although Jake is not coming on this adventure.

There  is a restaurant on the premises, as well as several nearby, which is great for weary travelers desperately in search of a coffee. Since flights can depart and arrive at various times, it is great to have a place to lay your head before or after you travel. With so many things to worry about when you travel, an exhausting trip home should not be one of them.

Days Inn- Saskatoon, Sask.

You know they say ‘if at first you don’t succeed, try again?” Well after our misadventures on our Memphis trip, Gerry and I are right back on the horse planning our upcoming trip to Philadelphia and Atlantic City. Since we live 6 hours from the airport, we usually try to arrange a hotel once we land from our trips.

This time for our trip coming home we plan to stay at Days Inn Saskatoon. The hotel features a free café breakfast which is great for travelers looking to hit the road after waking up. An airport shuttle and wi fi/High speed internet which helps you stay connected while on the road. There is also an indoor pool, a whirlpool, and a fitness center if you need to relax-but hopefully this trip will not be as stressful as our last one.

The rooms at the Days Inn feature all the amenities that travels have come to appreciate getting in their rate including internet, a fridge, coffee maker, cable television and a hair dryer-because you never know when you will need one. It is great to have so many conveniences and an affordable rate packaged together. We look forward to our next trip and the stay at Days Inn, Saskatoon.

Seeing Legends in Concert

What can you do if you cannot see your favorite artist live in concert? You go see a live tribute concert through Legends in Concert instead. There are various reasons why you may not be able to see your favorite artist live, for example they may not tour anymore, never come to your area, or they may no longer be with us. For those circumstances and many more Legends in Concert is a great alternative.

After our Memphis mishap, Gerry and I are very excited to see this event in Atlantic City. This is not just your average artist impersonation. Each performer fine tunes their craft, and uses own natural voice in a entertaining and often breath taking performance. Legends in Concert has several locations through the United States and Canada and features a slew of tribute performers including our favorite Elvis Presley, Elton John, Frank Sinatra, contemporary performers such as Adele and Carrie Underwood as well as many country artists. This is just the tip of the iceberg, of who there is too see.

This is a great opportunity to see a tribute to your favorite performers as well as become exposed to other musical talent at the same time.

Behind Bars at Eastern State Penitentiary

Monday, March 25, 2013

On our way to Atlantic City we will be taking a short stop in Philadelphia, there we will be visiting the historic Eastern State Penitentiary. It used to be the most expensive and famous prison in the world, but today it stands as an empty and haunted building. Since I really enjoy historic buildings and anything with a “ghostly” atmosphere, I knew that this will our must see while in Philly.

The prison was known for it architecture and its strict discipline, designed to strike remorse in the heart of its convicts. It was one of the first prisons to emphasize reform as opposed to punishment of convicts. Some famous criminals including Al Capone, have spend time behind its bars. Today the prison is a museum and a historic site that offers tours to the members of the public and is rumored to be haunted with nearly 60 paranormal investigator teams exploring the site each year. The facility is carefully kept as a “preserved ruin” which adds more interest and atmosphere of the tour itself.

We are very excited to see this architectural and historical marvel, as we get lost in the historical narrative of what has happened between the stone walls.

Great Eats- A&W Restaurant

When vacationing and travelling we often try to eat in places that we have never been before.  Sometimes though it is best just to enjoy something great and familiar. In Philadelphia we will seek some great and delicious comfort food in A&W restaurants. While we have the restaurants in Canada, it is still fun to go to a familiar place in another location.

A&W dining experience offers a little bit of nostalgia alongside its menu. Not only do they have some great burgers, and a fun variety of hot dogs, many people simply visit A&W for its fantastic root beer. Very few people can resist a root beer float or a freeze-it just makes the whole meal taste that much better.

A&W gives its patrons that all American food and dining experience that is like no other. A&W will always be one of our favorites, at home and abroad.

Healthy Travels with Whole Foods

When we travel to the United States, Gerry and I often stop at Whole Foods to get some healthy foods to eat.
Whole Foods is only recently expanding into Canada, and since there isn’t one where we live, it such a treat to be able to explore one while we travel. While in Philadelphia, next month, we will be shopping at Callowhill Whole Foods Market.
Let’s be honest- it is often very difficult to stay healthy while travelling, which is why stopping at Whole Foods is so important to us, not only can we get some healthy road trip snacks such as fruits and veggies but we can also get some healthy and delicious fully prepared meals. The selection is usually pretty great, so we both can have something that suits are mood. We found through our travels that each Whole Foods in the different states that we have been, carries items that are unique to the region. So this is a great opportunity to try some healthy food with a regional flare, or, when possible take something home with us to remind us of all the places that we have been.
We are very excited to see what Callowhill Whole Foods has to offer us.

Seeing the Light in New Jersey

When you are lost, it is important to have something to guide your way. This is why lighthouses have such a nostalgic feeling to many of us. They point the way home, or point to another stop in your journey.
When Gerry and I visit Atlantic City, next month, we will be exploring the Absecon Lighthouse
The lighthouse was first lit in 1857, so it is quite historic. At 171 feet tall it is also the tallest lighthouse in New Jersey and with 228 steps to the top not only will this be a sightseeing expedition but it will also be a workout for us.So we'll have to see if we want to attempt this once we get there! It is the only lighthouse in New Jersey with its original 1st order Fresnel lens still working-the original beacon that guided many ships home.
We are so excited to visit this historical marvel, while at the same time explore to magnificent coast of the state of New Jersey.

Sunday- March 24

Sunday, March 24, 2013

Leaving Saskatoon today to head back to Prince Albert and pick up Jake, and then head home.

Next month, we hope that things will go better for us, as we have a trip planned to Atlantic City, with a day visit in Philadelphia.

I hope to start telling you about where we'll be going and what we plan on doing, once I'm back home and settled. I believe we leave around the 17th or 18th of April.

Stay tuned.

Trip to Memphis: Cancelled

Saturday, March 23, 2013

Well, it was bound to happen. There was just too many things working against us to go on this trip to Memphis but now we have to wonder-why?

I hadn't shared this with you all but let me tell you what the events had been that led up to us saying:"This trip is not meant to be."

- Gerry's work assistant and him cannot be gone at the same time from work. Well, we had the trip planned but thought we would have to cancel because her mom had died and we thought with the funeral and all she wouldnt be back to work to relieve him.But it worked out..with days to spare before we left on the trip.

-Then, Jakey,( our dog) came down with a bad cold and got better just a day before we left. I'm not sure we could have left him at the kennels if he was sick.

-While here in Saskatoon,( where our flight leaves from), I fell ill with the stomache flu. It was a good thing we thought that our flight was later in the day, as Gravol and Imodium got me through most of the day.

-But on the way to the airport, someone cut us off and we were in a near accident, that would have delayed us. Then a boy stepped off the sidewalk and Gerry almost hit him...another near miss for a delay.

-Last straw was going to the airport, and seeing the line up and hearing people saying flights were cancelled.

Our layover flight in Denver was cancelled and so were other flights, due to the weather. We would have had to overnight there if we were to fly in.There were just too many coincidences in our opinion. "Someone" didnt want us going, so we decided not to even push it any further.

At this time, we'd like to send out a BIG THANK YOU to  Starwood Canada and  the Sheraton Cavalier here in Saskatoon, who have so graciously put us up for 2 nights, gave us Starwood Preferred Guest Status, allowed a late check out today, and have made us truly feel like family.

Heading home tomorrow.

***Update: March 24th-heard there were 100 flights cancelled out of Denver yesterday. I think if we would have tried to fly in, we're not sure what would have happened to us there yesterday.

On The Road Again- Day 1 Of Our Trip To Memphis

Friday, March 22, 2013

Left after lunch today, on the road to Prince Albert, Sask., where we dropped off our Jake at the dog kennel,(4 hour drive south).

Once at the kennels,Gerry took him in where he was going to be "rooming" but I didn't go in..last time was too heart breaking  leaving the little guy. Gerry said he seemed to be happy and willing to go this time, but I'm sure once the novelty wore off, he would have been looking for us.

Drove another hour or so to Saskatoon,Sask., where we stopped for supper at Smitty's and saved $5 off our meal for joining their Smitty's Club.
Next , on to our place of rest for the evening, the Sheraton Cavalier Saskatoon. We arrived to door men opening doors, friendly and helpful front desk staff. We loved the underground parking so our car stayed out of the snow today, and had a nice view of the river and park once we got to our room.
We are staying in a Starwood Preferred Guest room. King bed, spacious room, nice decor and exceptionally clean. To have all these features in a hotel really makes our stay that much more enjoyable .

We fly out tommorow afternoon and will be in Memphis quite late so not sure there will be a Day 2 post as it will be a day of travelling.

Happy St Patrick's Day

Sunday, March 17, 2013

How many of you celebrate St Patrick's Day? Are you wearing green today? Making a St Patty's Day supper?

I know we all try to wear a bit of green on the day, or dress or children for school in green. I remember mine when they were younger, and I would ask them, who forgot in your class to wear green today? I think they were happy that mom had remembered and they were "cool" that day cause they did! Gerry has an office job and I've still carried on that "mom" style when he'll go to work on a weekday- telling him to wear his green shirt!

I would have made the traditional St Patrick's Day meal with corned beef, cabbage, etc., but it's just not my dish, so I'm passing on that one today.

My It Works business has a St Patrick's Day SALE today only- so please be sure to tell your friends- our body wraps are $25 -Today Only! Regular $30. I do mail them out or you can shop online @ http://www.homebodywrap.ca

Happy St Patrick's Day!

P.S Next Friday we leave for our trip to Memphis!!

Review:Beauty Shop Online- KMS

Friday, March 15, 2013

When you look good, you feel good.

Many of us are always on the hunt for that special product that is going to take our appearance to the next level. Most traditional stores do not have a wide selection when it comes to beauty supplies, however Beauty Stop Online does. It is a source of hundreds if not thousands of products including hair care and hair color items, beauty tools, spa and body, cosmetics and fragrance. There are even sections for organic and natural products, ethnic and men’s. When shopping you can read the true reviews from customers to help guide your decision, which is like having a girlfriend in the store with you.

Recently, my daughter Erika reviewed KMS California Silk Sheen Shampoo,KMS California Free Shape Hot Flex Spray, and  KMS California Silk Sheen Polishing Serum from the Beauty Stop Online. This company has quite an extensive line of hair care products that should help even the toughest of manes. Erika loved how it made her hair feel very soft and manageable-a surprisingly hard balance to strike in hair products.Plus Erika is very fussy about what she uses and will not say she likes something for her hair if she doesn't.

If you are looking for a new beauty product but do not know where to start try giving Beauty Stop Online a try.

5 Ways To Get The Most From Reward Programs

Tuesday, March 12, 2013

The customer is the most valuable commodity that most businesses have. It is not easy to gain a customer, but it can be exceptionally easy to lose one. In order to maintain a loyal customer base, many establishments have now chosen to establish rewards programs to keep the people coming back. As a customer you are easily compared with the rewards choices that you have. You can earn rewards on anything to everything, from your cup of coffee in the morning, to building your deck, picking up cold medication, booking a vacation or feeding Fido. There are different types of reward programs out there. Some allow you to get immediate discount, others will give you a free product if you buy a stipulated amount of said product, while others allow you to collect points for dollar spend which you can then redeem for awards. If you want to start earning (and redeeming rewards) is sure to consider the following so that you can earn the most rewards from your spending buck.

Choose your rewards card carefully: There is only so much room in your wallet, so you cannot have every single rewards card available. If you have too many you might end up forgetting to use it, with will not benefit you at all. Also if you collect points on too many things you will never actually earn any substantial value. Collecting points on three or four reward cards is a good place to start.
Choose convenience: If you can only use your rewards card a specific retail locations that you are never near, you are unlikely to use it at all. Sure sometimes we can drive to the specified gas station to earn the points, but it is so much easier to see what kind of reward programs are in the places that you already frequent.
Double up on rewards: Many stores or services allow you to earn points, discounts or free products when you shop with their customer card. If you are loyal to the store that is a great deal, these cards however are not a form of payment. So if you combine your store loyalty card with for example a credit card that allows you to earn points as well, you can earn points doubly on a single purchase.
Look for promotions: Sure you can earn points by buying regularly from the retailer using your rewards cards or rewards credit cards. However, several times of the year, most loyalty programs offer special deals to their customers that allow you to earn many more rewards. If you seek out those specific dates or products featured (which you can see on the loyalty websites or flyers) you can earn more points in a single purchase than you would using your card sometimes for months.
Use your cards diligently: when you are earning rewards use your cards as much as you can. If you are earning points on a credit card, use it instead of cash or debit, just make sure to pay it off at the end of every month.

Hop To It With Easter Gift Giving

Easter gift giving is a fast growing tradition among many families. The gifts do not have be large, but something from the heart will get everyone excited to celebrate the rebirth of spring.

While traditionally gifts have been given to children such as a stuffed bunny or a chocolate egg, it is perfectly for everyone to partake. During this time Easter baskets are very popular filled with small treats for the kids and the kids at heart to enjoy. But as well, gifts can be exchanged amongst adults.

This trend is hopping along in popularity, so why not exchange a few small gifts as the family gathers for a festive Easter brunch?

Easter is typically filled with coloring eggs, Easter baskets and spending time with family. But this year, Hallmark would like to introduce you to Mama – a Squawkin’ Egg Droppin’ Hen. That’s right – Mama is in the house!

Although Mama made her ‘egg-cellent’ debut last year, she completely sold out of stores and is back by popular demand! Sporting a new straw hat and scarf, Mama’s ready for Easter and ready to lay some eggs – in a not-so-ordinary way.

Great for entertaining, this soft plush hen will surprise and delight any family by bobbing up and down to a parody of “Whoomp! (There It Is)” as she lays Easter eggs. To see Mama in egg-laying action, please check out this video or simply ‘cluck,’ I mean click, on the image of Mama above. The Squawkin’ Egg Droppin’ Hen is $15.95 (regularly $30.95) with the purchase of three cards at Hallmark Gold Crown stores and can be found at a store near you

The hen is so soft and fluffy and fun to watch , for all ages! This would make a great addition to any Easter basket!

Be sure to also pick up your Easter cards from the Signature Collection – these unique cards are handcrafted with glitter, embellishments, and thoughtful sentiments to warm anyone’s heart this Easter and are quite nice...I loved them- think they will be a hit with anyone I give them to this Easter.

-Soft soap-

When creating Easter baskets, it’s fun to go beyond chocolate bunnies and peeps and include festive yet unexpected products. The  “Forever Springtime”, is one of Soft soap’s newest limited edition body washes. It’s made specifically with Spring in mind and the Spring themed packaging would look great in an Easter basket or even just to turn an everyday shower or bath into a bright and colorful spring/Easter afternoon !
***limited edition body washes are available only at Walmart from February until May 2013

Renting A Car Doesn't Have to Cost Alot

Since Gerry and I travel a bit and do some travel blogging a few times a year, we have learned some things along the way. Often the destinations to which we are venturing are not driving distance away, so once we get to our destination we often get a rental car. Sure, it would be nice to relay on public transportation, but that is not really an option in all the places we visit. When you have a busy vacation schedule you don’t want to worry about making bus connections, looking at schedules and accounting for delays, when you take all these things into account, renting a car can be the more economical option especially when you travel with your family. You can often find a good deal on a rental car, and if you are not sure where to start check out DiscountCar.com .
We have learned a few tips and tricks along the way. You can often pick up your rental car in one location and drop it off in another. This is ideal when you are flying into a different airport than you are flying out of. The small fee associated with that is usually worth saving you time and hassle.
Different rental car locations, even if they are with the same company, may charge different prices. For example, a location right in the airport may be more expensive than one located elsewhere in the city or even the suburbs. If you are looking to save your dollars, consider different rental location, and price check.
When renting a car sometimes it is fun to try a different kind of car than you drive at home, especially if you are in the marked for a different vehicle, or simply just want to try out your “dream’ car. This is a fun opportunity to see if the car suits you and your family’s needs.
Before heading out and renting your car, make sure to call your auto insurance provider and check if you have insurance that will cover a rental as well. Many auto insurance companies cover you in such circumstances. This simple act can save you a lot of money, as you won’t have to but additional insurance, which will allow you to save a lot of extra money for your vacation.
Renting a car does not have to cost a lot of money, and the ease and convenience can make your holiday a stress free one.
