Review for Air Conflicts: Pacific Carriers for PS3 PLUS a Giveaway (USA only)

Review By: Jon

Air Conflicts Pacific Carriers

Maximum Games (MG) has announced the arrival of Air Conflicts: Pacific Carriers, a new arcade-style flight simulation available exclusively on PlayStation® 3 today, and later this month on PlayStation® Network. The game is centered on events that took place during World War II, featuring the aircraft and ships of the period, and historically inspired missions. Air Conflicts: Pacific Carriers is available now, and is rated T for Teens by the ESRB.

I started off playing the tutorial and found it very helpful with the early stages of learning to fly in the game.  It's quite easy to learn the controls and fly each of the different types of planes.  After a few runs at the tutorial I started up the Campaign mode to get a feel for the combat.  I started with the US side (nobody wants to be the bad guys off the start, ha ha) and was instantly dropped into the Pearl Harbor conflict.  It's a lot of fun being able to switch between aircraft to get a better angle on an enemy while dog fighting and when your bombing, once you run out of bombs you send the plane back and switch to a new one that is full of bombs. No time lost flying back to base to reload! I finished that battle then switched to the Japanese side to try it out and it was just as good!  Being able to fly the different kinds of planes each side has to offer is a good challenge to get used to but very fun once you get the hang of each type!  The ability to change the flight rosters is a good feature I found when the pilots start gaining experience in battle and getting their talents.  The Instant Battle and Survive! modes are lots of fun as well. Once and a while you just want to bomb something, do some dog fighting or just blast away at enemy planes from a carrier based anti-aircraft gun to let off some steam!

Overall the game is lots of fun to play!  Game play is good and the story line sucks you in making you want to sit there and play for hours.  Controls are very easy to get the hang of although I never did try out the Play station Motion controllers so I can't say how that would be. Only complaint I have about the game is the environment graphics but with the plane graphics being good and the fact you are always in combat, you hardly notice the graphics outside the plane!

Maximum Games would love to give away one of these games featured above to one lucky US winner. A random draw will be held by Random.org on September 13, 2013 from all entries received.

12 Tips for Healthy Fall Foods

Thursday, August 29, 2013

Summer may have been the season for outdoor grilling and popsicles, but now that school is back, it’s time to refocus your family meal strategy. Use these food tips and recipe ideas from Sally Kuzemchak, MS, RD, BetterForYou.com’s mom blogger, to keep your kids nourished while saving yourself time, money, and energy! BetterForYou.com published by Linkwell Health.

De-stress breakfast

1.       Go portable: When everyone is rushing out the door, you need a meal on the go. Try whole wheat English muffins with peanut butter and sliced bananas, and milk in a to-go cup. Cook hard-boiled eggs and peel them the night before, then serve with whole grain rolls and fruit. Or whip up a smoothie with Greek yogurt, milk, and fruit.
2.       Jazz up oatmeal: Oatmeal, which is low in fat and high in heart-healthy fiber, is a nutritious, affordable breakfast staple. Make it more appealing by adding a spoonful of natural peanut butter and a sprinkle of chocolate chips, a bit of almond butter with a dollop of jam, or a tablespoon each of nuts and fruit.
3.       Choose a better cereal: There’s nothing wrong with a bowl of cereal with milk—you just need a good cereal. When choosing cereal, look for 8 grams of sugar or less per serving. You can also buy unsweetened cereal, like plain O’s or shredded wheat, and add just a touch of sweeteners at home.

Pack smart for lunch

4.       Don’t over stuff: Pack small portions of main items, and include fruits and veggies as sides. You’ll cut down on wasted food and eat healthier.
5.       Make juice a treat: Juice is healthier than soda, but it often still has lots of sugar and can put a dent in your wallet. Instead of packing juice every day, make it a treat. Pack water to three times a week, and 100% juice or milk the other days.
6.       Roll it up: Use a tortilla as your base, add on whatever your child likes—lean deli meat and cheese, or apple slices and peanut butter—and roll it up. Cut in half if you need to.

Simplify dinnertime

7.       Take some shortcuts: It’s okay to buy packaged mac and cheese—just look for whole wheat pasta and no artificial flavors. Add broccoli, diced tomatoes, or sweet peas for extra fiber and nutrients. Only use half or three-quarters of the cheese powder to reduce the sodium content.
8.       Pick frozen: Shrimp and fish are low-calorie sources of lean protein and brain-healthy fats. Save money by choosing frozen shrimp and frozen fish that’s farm-raised, or water-packed salmon and tuna. Use on salads, sandwiches, pastas, and more!
9.       Scope fast food menus: Sometimes, it’s just not possible to cook a homemade meal. Skip the guilt about going through the drive-through by looking up fast food menus online so you can pre-select healthier options. In general, choose grilled foods instead of fried, small fries instead of large, and water instead of soda.

Serve healthier snacks

10.   Satisfy a sweet tooth: Kids and adults can agree that living in a world without cookies is no fun. For better options, scan the ingredient list: If you see “hydrogenated” or “partially hydrogenated oils,” put it back. It means they may have hidden trans fats.
11.   Keep chips basic: There are so many chips that claim to be healthy by putting “multigrain” or “all natural” on the package. The truth is plain tortilla chips made with just corn, oil, and salt are your healthiest bets for when you need some crunch. Serve with a little salsa for extra flavor.
12.   Feed your body: A banana, some yogurt, or a handful of nuts and natural dried fruit will energize you for your workout. After the gym, a combo of protein and carbs will help repair muscles. Try an apple with peanut butter or some hummus with whole grain crackers.

Visalia, California

Tuesday, August 27, 2013

We are in the final stages of preparation for our Californian adventure. While there we will be stopping in Visalia, which is a picturesque town located close to the Sequoia National Park. Not only is the scenery beautiful, so is the architecture, and we cannot wait to stop by.

While in Visalia, we will be staying at Visalia Marriott at the Convention Center. It is really centrally located to everything there is to see and do in the area including King's Canyon, Sequoia National Park, Crystal Cave, and Lake Kaweah.

The hotel is filled with free services that any traveler loves, such as complimentary parking as well as free WiFi. The hotel features a heated outdoor pool, a whirlpool, a fitness center and is very closely located to all sort of great activities such as golf courses, or hiking trails. There is also a great Californian style restaurant located in the hotel so that guests do not have to travel very far in search of a good meal. However, most people get really, really excited about hotel beds. They just see, extra comfortable, and the Marriott is among the very best. The beds feature luxurious bedding including down comforters, custom duvets and cotton rich linen. With great TV services, free internet and a wet bar, hotel guests may be tempted just to stay in the hotel instead of exploring around it.

Whatever, we choose to do in Visalia, you can bet that the Marriott will be a great place to rest!

Welcome To Madera, California

Saturday, August 24, 2013

While in California we will be visiting Madera, which  is located in the Central Valley and Sierra Nevada. It is in the ideal location to everything we want to see, close to Fresno, (where we fly out from), and numerous Californian attractions.
The area is world famous for their numerous vineyards, many of which are a must see.

While in Madera, we will be visiting Home Grown Cellars where they cultivate, grow and process pomegranate juice and pomegranates. I think it is fascinating to know that pomegranates are among the oldest cultivated foods in the world, dating back as far back as 3000 BC, to what is now modern Iran. In fact, they figure potently, in Greek mythology. The juice made in Home Grown Cellars is 100% natural, with no additives, no preservatives, and no added sugar. These fruits are jam packed in goodness, being an excellent source of antioxidants that help your body repair and prevent damage by free radicals. There is such a great variety of products produced, and frankly it will be a lot of fun to watch, what is certainly an unusual fruit in Canada grow. We are very excited to see how these pomegranate products are made, and to sample each one of them.

Madera is wine country, and Gerry especially does love his wine.
While in town we will be making a visit to Quady Winery, which is the number one rated attraction in Madera according to Trip Advisor. The atmosphere in Quady is said to be fantastic and very wonderful for wine tasting. The wine tasting is free, and it allows you to appreciate the different selections of wines that Quady has to offer. You do not have to be an expert by any means to learn to enjoy a good glass of wine. Luckily for us, we will be visiting during grape crushing season which will last from August to October. So not only do we get to taste some wonderful wines but we also get to see how they are made.  For the truly daring visitors, they can even experience the age old tradition of crushing the grapes with their feet. Too cool-this should be one for the bucket list!

And for a place to hang our hats and lay our heads in Madera we will be staying at Spring Hill Suites- which is part of the Marriott family. The hotel is centrally located close to Fresno as well as Yosemite National Park, both places that we hope to visit while in California. The hotel suites offer different places for eating, relaxing and sleeping so that they truly feel like they are your home away from home. The suits also offer butler’s pantries complete with refrigerator, sink & microwave.

Since we do a lot of travel blogging, I am especially looking forward to a large well lit desk, along with the very important free high speed internet. Additionally, the hotel offers complimentary parking, so that you do not waste your valuable dollars just to pay for a place to park your rental car. It is also nice that the hotel offers complimentary breakfast. We pay so much for everything in life, so it can be really nice, to have things included in the price of the hotel.

After a long day exploring the area you can relax in their outdoor pool, or a whirlpool. This will be a great place to lay down our head after we finish exploring another part of the state of California.

Gerry and I recently had a chance to try the following new Kellogg Canada food products-
the run down on them and our personal opinions.

Special K* Popcorn Chips Butter Flavor

Special K* Popcorn Chips are a lightly seasoned, savory snack that satisfies your craving for something salty and crunchy, with 80 calories per 20 piece serving. Available in two delicious flavors: Butter and Sweet & Salty.

Gerry: Very good taste! A plus is no popcorn kernels stuck in your teeth!
Me: I loved these! They are like a rice cake I found with a popcorn flavor. Can be very addicting though once you start a munch!

Special K* Popcorn Chips Sweet & Salty Flavor

Special K* Popcorn Chips are a lightly seasoned, savory snack that satisfies your craving for something salty and crunchy, with 80 calories per 20 piece serving. Available in two delicious flavors: Butter and Sweet & Salty.

Me: I didn't care for these. I tasted sweet right away and after I tried the popcorn flavored ones, I just didn't really seem to care for these. Too sweet for me for a snack chip.
Gerry: Too sweet for me!

All-Bran* cereal bars Blueberry Brown Sugar

Kellogg's* All-Bran* Bars are now available in popular Blueberry Brown Sugar Flavor. Like our other All-Bran* Bars, they contain Wheat Bran. All-Bran* Blueberry Brown Sugar Flavor bars are high in fiber and provide 16% of the recommended daily fiber.

Me: For the simple fact that I don't care for blueberries or the taste, I didn't try these bars.
Gerry: Liked these. Very original blueberry flavor- great for an afternoon snack.

Vector* Protein* Chewy Bars Mixed Nut

With 11 g of protein per bar, Vector Protein* Chewy Bars can help you get nutrition you need for your active life. We've put in lots of crunchy nuts and dipped it in a smooth chocolatey coating for a sweet and salty taste and chewy, crunchy texture. Available in Peanut and Mixed Nut.

Gerry: Found these to be less inferior to the peanut ones in taste.
Me: I tried these but didn't prefer as much as I liked the peanut ones below. Nutty and good flavor but still preferring peanut.

Vector* Protein* Chewy Bars Peanut

Monday, August 19, 2013

Soon it will be that time of the year again, when millions of students leave the comforts of their homes and head off to achieve post secondary education. A vast majority of these students will be living in a dorm during their first foray into this adult world. There are many benefits in living in a dorm such as the proximity to campus, safety and the possibility of making life- long friends in a new city.

When you first enter your dorm room you may feel it lacks the comforts of home. There is usually utilitarian, basic furniture that has been used by so many other students before you, that you may feel that it lacks personality. Do not be discouraged; with a few personal touches here and there, you can make your dorm room feel, cozy, comfortable and feeling like home....almost. Now, if you could only get rid of that annoying roommate!

A Cheaper Way To Fix The Backyard Fence Plus An Update

Sunday, August 18, 2013

Just beyond our backyard fence is where Gerry has  the wood pile,( wood used for the wood stove in his workshop when it gets cold), but the fence is kind of old and rotting in spots back there. Fence boards ARE expensive and so is paint. Being that this is only a small section behind the wood pile, I decided that instead of replacing the fence boards with new fence boards, let's tear that section down and just put up a few pallets instead.

Gerry took one section down and put up the pallet just to show what it will look like, and since its only for yard separation with the neighbor's yard and behind the wood pile, we won't be painting it. Kind of a rustic look .
Gerry has to get his hands on about 2-3 more free pallets but saves us big and gets rid of that bad part of the fence. Will update with another photo when it's done.

August 18th Update:
Decided it looked quite well without a fence in behind it- so for now we are leaving out the pallets.

Good Luck to All!

Miller's Landing, Bass Lake, California

When in California we will be  spending some time at Miller’s Landing. We hear it's  a great place to hang out, put your feet up and enjoy the Californian summer sunshine. If you don't  feel like simply basking in the Californian scenery, there are plenty of things to keep yourself amused. Many people rent ski boats and Sea Doos in order to have some fun on the water. There are so many things to do on the water that you will never be bored, and it is the perfect place to introduce kids to water sports as well.

Furthermore the resort has a little Marina at which you can rent a boat or even dock a boat you already own. However many people are simply satisfied looking out at the sunset overlooking the Marina. The resort has several cabins for rent, which give you a lot more rustic and unique experience (with modern accommodations) than what you would get in a standard hotel room.
The resort features a general store and little restaurant/grill which grills up the perfect lakeside treats such as hamburger, hot dogs, patty melts and ice cream. Located on Bass Lake in the beautiful Sienna National Forest, we are really looking forward to our stay there.

It's also good to know they are a pet friendly resort, but our Jakey will be sadly staying behind once again.
