Update on Floor Renos

Monday, November 25, 2013

Well, we were able to use some of the last pieces of our flooring to change out the Walmart flooring in our main bathroom, and as well, mixed with part of our lino on our step into the kitchen from the porch.
Think both look mighty fine.

Home Depot Canada really has some nice flooring!

** Both are actually the dark wood but picture seems to show the top photo darker but bathroom the same color.

The Single Best Way To Eliminate Most Germs Inside Your Home

Monday, November 18, 2013

It's amazing how many people keep a meticulously clean home but fail to keep their bedding clean. Your bed is used more often than any other object inside your home. Which makes it the one object in your home prone to more germs, bacteria and dust than any other object inside your home. So yeah, it's a good idea to clean your bed as often as possible.

Here are four tips that will allow you to sleep in a clean bed every single night of the week.

1. Flip The Mattress. Most people flip their beds to simply prolong the life of their mattress. But most people don't realize that flipping the mattress actually allows you the perfect opportunity to vacuum it. Vacuuming your mattress removes all of the dry skin that have accumulated during your sleep time. Those dry skin particles are the perfect food for dust mites and other allergens. Flip your mattress at least once every quarter and vacuum the mattress and box spring each time as well.

2. Clean The Mattress. Remove the sheets so that your mattress is completely exposed. Then, sprinkle baking soda on your mattress and allow it to sit for at least four hours. The baking soda will remove moisture, dirt and odors from your mattress.

3. Wash Your Bed Sheets. A recent study showed that the average American washes their sheets once every seven days. Ironically, that's about as long as anyone should sleep on their sheets before using new ones. Washing sheets removes dry skin so it's a very important task when it comes to keeping a clean bed environment. So, wash your pillow and bed sheets at least once every week!

4. Keep Food In The Kitchen. A recent poll showed that 20% of people eat food in their beds. You can bet that 100% of those people have some food particles hiding in their sheets as a result. And of course, tiny bugs know this too. I know it's convenient but try to stay away from eating in your bed. Think about this way......little, tiny bugs are crawling on you while you sleep so that they can eat those microscopic food particles left behind after your midnight snack!

Germs can be found all over your home. And most people target the obvious places such as the bathroom and kitchen. However, your bedroom actually contains more germs than anywhere else throughout your home so make sure to use these tips and you're indoor health quality will recognize an immediate improvement.

Floor Renos-Complete!

Sunday, November 17, 2013

Well, happy to say that the floor renos are all completed- well sort of! We actually have enough flooring left that Gerry is going to re-do the main bathroom that has the Walmart flooring currently in it. But other than that, all done- and very happy with our new look and the Home Depot  flooring we picked out for the job!

                                                                Laundry Room and closet

                                                                       Spare Room

Chestnuts Roasting On An Open Fire

A few weeks ago, we picked up this wall mount fireplace from Walmart for $118+ tax.
Have always wanted one. It works on 7 flame settings and 2 forced fan heat settings. Quite nice! Jakey usually likes laying in front of it..now all he needs is the little bear skin rug!

Review: The Furminator

Monday, November 11, 2013

Review by: Erika and Jon

Pet owners know that removing excess fur from their pets can be a hassle, it soon ends up all over us and all over the house. The Furminator is a one of a kind tool that is designed to remove the undercoat from your pet. This specially formulated de-shedding tool, when used for 10-20 minutes, twice a week can work wonders for those of us who always see hairballs roll across our living rooms like tumble weeds. The tool works on the fur of dogs, cats and other furry animals. It can cut down shedding as much as 90%, which is amazing.

My daughter and her boyfriend reviewed this product on their dog "Be" and said:

"Our dog doesn't usually like getting her hair brushed but she LOVES the FURminator (as you can see in the photos).. It gets all the loose hair out while still being gentle on her coat and skin. The FURejector button is a great feature, which makes clean up a breeze. If your dog has a shedding problem, we highly recommend the FURminator!! "

Update On Our Flooring Re-Do With Home Depot

As you may remember, a few weeks ago I told you all about our trip to Saskatoon to pick up flooring from Home Depot. We were going to be re-doing all the flooring in the trailer, except the 2 bathrooms, which already had been done with Walmart flooring.

Well, Gerry has spent the last few days doing the kitchen, going over top of the old tile we had. Well, maybe not so old, but we had gotten it for next to nothing before on clearance, but I was never really happy with it.

                                              BEFORE :

                                              AFTER:

                                                                 BEFORE:

                                          AFTER:

We really notice a big difference with this flooring! Love it for these many points:

-better quality
-easier to cut and lay out
-less scratch resistant
-more defined, individual planks

Highly recommend it! Will be sharing more photos as Gerry continues on!

Also having to change out the register covers now too to dark brown- the tan ones just don't cut it with the dark floor. And going to try to sell the old flooring as alot of it is sell able.

5 Simple Ways To Save $$

Thursday, November 7, 2013

1. If you have stuff around the house that you don’t need or want - sell it.

Clothes and small items are perfect for a garage sale or consignment store. Large items or items with significant value can be sold on Craigslist or eBay. Selling your unwanted stuff is an easy way to get extra cash to pay bills or to save for a future need.

2. Learn how to become a “deliberate spender” by creating a household budget.

Budgeting is a simple way to learn how you spend your money and to avoid impulse buying. With a clear spending plan and a little self-discipline, you can avoid the debt trap of spending more than you earn and relying on credit. If you’re really determined, a budget will help you save for a rainy day, or for a new car or family vacation.

3. Be a savvy shopper.

Stock up on store specials when you shop for groceries, and use coupons whenever possible. Avoid impulse purchases – make a shopping list, never shop on an empty stomach, and leave the kids at home.

When shopping for Back-to-School, don’t stray from your “needs list” – buying extra clothes and supplies will leave you with nothing to pay for unexpected expenses after school starts. And remember that many states offer sales tax holidays that will save you at least 5-8% on Back-to-School clothes, shoes, accessories, and supplies.

4. If possible, never pay retail.

Discount retailers make it easy to wear the latest fashions without having to pay full retail price. Know retailers’ seasonal cycles and wait for sales. Shop online – not only is it easier to comparison shop, but many online retailers offer special promotions, discount codes, and free shipping that will save you money. Don’t be afraid to haggle on large purchases and services. In many cases you can “name your price” or get free “add-ons.” Negotiating may even work with retailers, especially if you can point to offers from competitors.

5. You should have some fun, but save money on entertainment.

Many local retailers have kiosks where you can rent a movie for $1 per night – or less if you have a coupon. If movies aren't your thing, make a trip to the library. There are books available for all ages, including fantastic book series for children and teens. And reintroduce your kids to the things you did as a kid – arts and crafts, board games, card games, and playing outside.

6. If you can do it yourself, then do it yourself.

With the advent of home improvement stores, you can do simple projects yourself. Instead of going out to lunch, “brown bag it.” And for much less than you spend on your favorite latte at the coffee shop, you can brew your own premium brand coffee and add just about any flavor imaginable.

Monday, November 4, 2013

Cold weather is definitely on its way, which means utility bills are about to start skyrocketing. I would love to share with you a new, FREE ebook I was told about with you to use as a resource. It is filled with ways to get ready for low temperatures, including tips for saving money on heating costs, identifying where homes commonly lose heat, how to easily find said air leaks, and simple DIY fixes to keep the warmth in.

Enjoy the savings!

What We Woke Up To Today!

I hate the cold and snow!! We had 18 cm of snow fall by this morning and it's calling for another 6 today.
Jake and I headed out to pick up the mail and paper today, and got stuck coming out of the driveway. Of course, it was a good thing the neighbor was there to help push me back into the drive way and then shoveled near the front of the driveway. Snow very heavy. Stayed close to home today and that was my only outing. Has the snow began to fall where you are?
Today was the day we both dug out our winter jackets and our snow boots.

Keep Cancer on a Leash

Did you know that one in four dogs dies of cancer? For cats, it’s one in eight.

It’s heartbreaking for pet lovers – but there is some amazing work being done at the Ontario Veterinary College and the work being done there is contributing toward better cancer care for people, since dogs develop many of the same cancers that we do.

Today, the OVC launches its ‘Keep Cancer on a Leash’ campaign, sponsored by Purina, to raise awareness (and fundraising) for this important cause.

We’d love your support in spreading awareness of this important cause on your site! Check out this must-see music video (“We Could Be Heroes”) performed by all-canine cast in support of pet cancer treatment and research as it really helps show the importance of this initiative. For every dollar donated, Purina will match up to $125,000 in individual donations to www.pettrust.ca

The Mighty Winter Boot

Friday, November 1, 2013

Did you know that boots have been around as early as 1000 year B.C.? Thankfully, the style, and comfort have come a long way since its early animal hide origins. Today a variety of materials are used in manufacturing. Today, the average consumer can choose from a variety of functions and styles, from the work boot, to the hiking boot, the snow boot and even the stylish boot, along with many more styles. Winter is a great time to try them all, as you may never know as to which occasion may call for special boot.
Plus nowadays, you don’t have to sacrifice comfort for style.

We've come across some great boots for you to consider when looking this year:

Ahnu-

Inspired by their popular women’s Montara Boot, the Northridge is ready to weather the storm in style and comfort. Chic and warm, the lightweight nubuck mid calf boot is lined with eVent® waterproofing and armed with 200 grams of insulation to keep feet warm and toasty in rain, sleet or snow. The medial zipper entry combined with the lace up functionality allows for easy access and a custom fit, while the Vibram® rubber outsole provides optimal traction to brave winter’s wonderland.

**Update on these boots that I also got an opportunity to review:
The boots are awesome and I wear them everyday.
I didn't think they would be warm as I'm used to the traditional fur lining in boots, which these didn't have.  I have Raynauds so my feet HAVE to stay warm- and these have really been great !
They are also great for no sliding when walking!

M* Jewels- (boot accessory)-

Bored with your Uggs – Clip Em!
If you live in your Ugg’s this time of year….now there’s a way to enhance them with M* Jewels. They are simply beautiful embellishments, that add some pizzazz to your footwear. Women, teens and girls can have fun and look great change’M up with M*Jewels.
