Skimping on Insurance? Don’t Skip These Important #Health Tests

Sunday, July 30, 2017

With the healthcare system is crisis, tons of red tape and fewer doctors accepting insurance, managing one’s health has become a major challenge. More and more women are skipping key exams simply because getting appointments are a hassle and obtaining coverage isn’t always guaranteed. That said, there are some key tests and exams that ever woman must have at various times of her life. If you’re going to put a preventative care plan together for yourself it’s important to know which tests are necessary to maintain optimal health. Dr. Christopher Calapai, a NYC board certified expert in osteopathic medicine specializing in longevity, recommends these tests.

Blood and blood pressure screening:
Starting at age 18, every woman needs to have her blood pressure checked at least every two years. Having annual bloodwork done is the way to tell if organs are functioning properly. Doing the basic blood panel between age 18 and 39 is a great start. After age 40 additional testing for things like fibrinogen which impacts blood clotting and C-Reative Protein which looks at inflammation in the body are key tests to consider. “As a longevity specialist, bloodwork tells a detailed story about health patterns and future predictions that can then be addressed and even reversed with early care,” says Dr. Calapai.

Cholesterol screening/lipid profile:
Cholesterol is a type of fatty protein in your blood that can build up in your arteries, so knowing how much cholesterol is present is a good predictor of your risk for heart disease. It’s important to start monitoring cholesterol starting at age 20 to establish a history. As women age cholesterol levels tend to rise so having a solid basis of comparison decade to decade is helpful in preventing heart disease down the road, explains Dr. Calapai.

Pap smear:
A pap smear is an important test for women to get annually if they are sexually active and over age 21. The test is designed to detect infection, inflammation or cellular abnormalities in the cervix which may lead to cervical cancer. “This is certainly one of those tests that must be done every year. Some women diagnosed with HPV who may have had abnormal results are often monitored even more closely. The more a woman knows about the health of her reproductive organs the better she can integrate foods, vitamins and minerals to keep herself healthy,” advises Dr. Calapai.

Mammograms and breast exams:
Women should begin administering monthly self-breast exams monthly as early as age 18. “It’s so important for women to understand that breast tissue changes during the month. They want to do the self-check in their shower or lying down just after their period ends when breasts are less tender, sore or swollen. This is when to feel around for any lumps, pain, tenderness, inflamed skin, and any issues with the nipple such as blockages or discharge. A mammography is an x-ray of the breasts. As of 2017, the American Cancer Society screening guidelines advises women to begin getting annual mammograms by age 45 and then can go to every other year by age 55. This guideline is for a woman of average risk. Women with a family history of breast cancer or with had cystic breasts with benign cysts should obviously have mammograms at an earlier age. “The self-exam is so important because early detection is key. If a woman is in her 20’s or 30’s and feels a lump she can follow through with her doctor for a closer look. When a woman goes in for a pap smear a breast exam is often done as well. However, you can’t hold off and skip the self-exam, cautions Dr. Calapai.

Skin cancer screening:
Skin cancer, while less deadly than other kinds of cancers, is the number-one cancer diagnosed among Americans; and one type of skin cancer, melanoma, is deadly. The number of women under age 40 with basal cell carcinoma, one type of skin cancer, has more than doubled in the last 30 years and women under 39 are almost twice as likely to develop melanoma as men.
A skin cancer screening involves a full examination of the skin with focused attention on any moles, skin lesions or any other changes to the skin. It is advised to begin skin cancer screenings at any age and the fairer the complexion the more vigilant one must be. Annual screenings are normal and doctors may recommend twice annually if there are more moles and you’re on hypertension medication. “The skin is the largest organ in the body and a great indicator of overall health. Even if you have darker skin any rash, growth or skin issue should be taken seriously so the underlying cause can be determined quickly,” adds Dr. Calapai.

Eye exam and vision screening:
According to the American Optometric Association people with normal, good vision should have their eyes examined every 3 years. For people who needed glasses or contacts at an earlier age an annual exam is recommended. By age 40 those with healthy, strong eyesight will begin to see changes either when driving, reading or watching TV. Women are at a slightly higher risk of developing age-related macular degeneration, one of the most common eye health problems. A vision screening tests how well you can see; an eye exam checks for glaucoma, macular degeneration, retinopathy, and other eye diseases. Make sure you're having both kinds of exams. If you have diabetes, you're at much higher risk for eye problems and should be checked more often. “When you get an eye exam and a prescription for glasses is give follow through and get the glasses. It’s amazing how many people put this off which only leads to further eye strain and headaches. Besides, glasses these days are a stylish accessory. There’s no need to compromise eye health for vanity,” says Dr. Calapai.

Product #Review: Shape + Store- The Burger Master

Friday, July 28, 2017

I wanted to share with you my review of a product called the Burger Master.
Now you really only have to go to their web site and watch the video to see how cool one of these really is.

But we had the opportunity to review our own and it's just like in the video. It's all these things:

- the best way to shape, store and freeze your homemade food- especially burgers!
- a perfect gift
- compact and stackable - take up minimal freezer space-although.. it didn't fit in our RV freezer. However if your RV has a residential sized fridge in it, it would.
- top rack dishwasher safe
- made in Canada
- BPA and Phthalate free

It's great for making a whole bunch of burgers all at one time, freezing them, and having them ready as you need them, one by one. All natural. No preservatives and no store frozen boxed burgers for you anymore!

Review: The #Spa Dress

Going to the spa, on a cruise, or even the backyard, The Spa Dress is a perfect piece to have in your wardrobe. I love my new Spa Dress. It comes currently in limited sizing, but in white, black and pink, with more colors coming soon.

It's great to be worn so many ways. Great for overnight stays and quick getaways that take you from steam rooms and saunas to boats and beaches around the world. It's also a very easy slip on an off.

The Spa Dress® is a multi-use wardrobe item for the practical female traveler who prefers to pack lightly and/or expeditiously. Rolls up, is easily packable in the tiniest of getaway bags. Versatile as:

  • A Body-Enhancing Cover-Up Wearable UNDER resort robes. Cotton-blend 80-20% spandex adapts to curves. Stretchy top provides light support.
  • A Slip-On Towel Soft, lush terry locks in moisture. Doesn’t fall when you need a towel to stay up. Reduces public displays of ‘towel dropping syndrome.’
  • A Dress-Before-You-Dress Text message and primp as you wear. Comfy walk-around attire. Dries as you dress. Leaves hands free for everyday errands.
  • A Sundress or Skirt Practical for the sauna but wearable on the beach, by the pool or anywhere your spa excursion takes you, at home or away.

Gets rid of the problem of ‘towel dropping syndrome’ at spas, health clubs and in particular, hotel rooms opening doors for room service.

I personally will wear it outdoors till I get myself on another getaway! I like that the string ties can be worn up or down, tucked into the dress front, so maybe now I can get rid of some tan lines from sitting outdoors in my shorts and tank tops most of the summer.

Moose Jaw, #Saskatchewan

Arrived home yesterday-

Stopped through Moose Jaw, Sask@ the tourism center for a quick lunch in the RV and some photos.

We have been to the city before but hadn't been at their tourism center, which has a "Snowbirds" scale replica plane, there was also trolley parked there when we went, and a giant moose stands there as well. Lots of folks stopped, lots with their dogs too.

Today's Sightseeing in Central North Dakota

Wednesday, July 19, 2017

Man it was hot today- got to 86 today! Too hot for me. My legs always bother me when it gets too hot- feel so heavy and get achy. This morning was rainy and cloudy and we thought sightseeing would really be bad for photos today but by noon it was already clearing up.

We drove about 45 minutes south towards Garrison Dam. Had hoped to have seen the Dam in operation but they were actually fixing the spillway gates, so no water was running through. Was odd to see the one side of the Dam with no water and the concrete base.

From there we went to see the Knife River Indian Villages near Stanton.

After we headed 15 minutes further down the road to the Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center and Fort Mandan.

Had something to eat after they closed at 5 pm and headed back to the campground to relax for the evening and stay indoors with the AC on!

Tomorrow we leave Fort Stevenson Park near Garrison, and head back towards Minot.

Medicine Cabinet Essentials This Summer

Summer is a time to enjoy the warm weather, flaunt your bod and enjoy the outdoors as much as possible. However, the hot season means natural elements that can hinder anyone’s well-being, making it imperative your medicine cabinet is stocked with the most essential, over-the-counter, at-home first aid products and medications.

1.    Moisturizing Sunscreen – This goes without saying. A moisturizing sunscreen is an absolute must! Sunscreen acts as a basic sun protector, assists with premature aging, helps with evening skin tones, all while making sure you stay moisturized.

2.    Aloe Vera Gel - With the sun rays in full force, it can be difficult to protect your skin from the heat. Aloe Vera Gel has great preventative properties also working as a skin rejuvenation, healing and soothing product. Aloe Vera Gel is a summer essential tool in skin-health and can used to relieve burned skin, remove sunspots, and moisturize dry skin

3.    Calamine Lotion - The summer brings mosquitos along with other pestering insects, leaving you vulnerable to bug bites and itchy rashes. Calamine Lotion is an oldie but goodie. This soothing cream is great to calm any itching that you may endure.

4.    Neosporin – Most people are more active during the summer season, partaking in outdoor activities like hiking, camping and beaching. Neosporin helps in treating and preventing infection due to minor cuts, scrapes, and burns you may get from your summer lifestyle.

5.    Band-Aids – Besides the most common use of Band-Aids, such as treating minor cuts and scrapes, Band-Aids can also be a great summer hack and important to prevent blisters, friction and wounds from sandals and other exposed footwear.

6.    Benadryl – Summer allergies are no joke! Pollen and insects can do a lot harm. Benadryl treats sneezing, runny nose, watery eyes, hives, skin rash, itching, and other allergy symptoms that summer brings.

7.    Multivitamins – Some people may not know it, but summer is a great time to boost your body’s defense system.Multivitamins are important to provide the nutriment your body will crave in the summer.

Dr. Christopher Calapai, D.O., a New York City Osteopathic Physician board certified in family and anti-aging medicine has shared with The One Income Dollar the above seven medicine cabinet must-haves for the summer!

We're Here! Fort Stevenson State Park!

Tuesday, July 18, 2017

A perfect place to come to relax and get away from city life, just relax with the family, come to fish, hike, and more- Fort Stevenson State Park, North Dakota.

We arrived here from Minot, about 45 minutes south, earlier this afternoon and had the chance to drive around the park and check out some spots in the park such as the Guardhouse, cabins, marina, a cute prairie dog town, and Lake Sakakawea ( a giant reservoir created in the 50's).

Just relaxing this evening in a nice quiet spot in the middle loop in a pull out spot. We do love it. Full hook ups and Jakey even saw a red squirrel and bunny already so he was quite excited!

We'll still be here tomorrow but during the day will be heading about an hour further south and seeing some historic sites in the area, then back to our site, where we'll spend another relaxing evening I'm sure.

3 Things #Homeowners Should Do with Their HAVC

When you move into a new home, there are going to be a lot of nuances and things to learn about the property. The functionality of your HVAC is one thing that you will want to figure out. If your new home has an old system with aging, inefficient appliances, it could be very expensive to run your heat and AC. Here are three things that you should do to make sure your HVAC is running efficiently.

Have an HVAC Tech Look at Your System

It is always smart to have an HVAC pro come to your home to help figure out your system. Often, the tech will look at your system, check the key components and give it a clean bill of health. If you are lucky enough to have an HVAC system that is perfectly efficient and functional as is, you can thank your lucky stars. But it is more likely that at least a couple of components will need some sort of maintenance or repair.

The furnace and condenser unit are the most important and expensive parts of a central HVAC system. You will want a certified tech to look at them closely to see if they need to be repaired or replaced.

Replace the System If Needed

If your HVAC tech suggests investing in a new furnace, air pump, or condenser, make the upgrade as soon as possible so you can start to see the benefits. It is not always a bad thing if your furnace or condenser units need to be replaced because it might give you a chance to update with an energy-efficient, money-saving unit. For instance, a new furnace with an Energy Star label can save you nearly $100 each year. This means that your investment will eventually pay for itself.

Keep up the Maintenance

Once you move into your new home, you will need to continue the proper maintenance of your system. First of all, changing your furnace filter is a simple job that doesn't require any tools or HVAC know-how. Basically, you pull out the old filter and put the new filter in its place.

You also should keep the condenser covered during the winter and clean it before you use it in the summer. If the new condenser doesn't have a cover, you can buy one. Covers cost less than $50 and will protect the thousands of dollars you have invested in the condenser unit.

Cleaning the condenser is a simple job that you can do as long as you have a hose with decent water pressure. Simply spray down the outside walls of the condenser to rinse to dirt out of the coils. The coils work better when they aren't clogged with dirt and leaves. If the previous homeowners didn't properly maintain the condenser, you might need some cleaner to help break down years of dirt buildup on the coils.

With a fully functional and efficient HVAC system, your new home will be more comfortable and eco-friendly.

The Perfect Gift For Any Dog Owner- "If My Dog Could Talk" by I See Me! Books

Sunday, July 16, 2017

Although the I See Me personalized book called "If My Dog Could Talk" is more geared towards children, my own daughters are already adults and I was quite excited to have the opportunity to review one of their pet books for one of them. My youngest daughter has a dog named Be- and this will be the perfect keepsake gift for her, when her and her boyfriend come to visit next month.
What pet owner doesn't love their pet? And this book is great to give for any age dog owner as far as I'm concerned.

This is hilariously narrated from the dog’s perspective-a rhyming storybook celebrating the special, loving bond between dogs and their families. A dedicated, personalized book with our daughter's name, her boyfriend Jon's and her dog's name Be in many pages throughout, this is a wonderful, wonderful book- very impressed with it.

This book is truly a one of a kind keepsake.
