Use It Up: A Quick Chef Salad

If you have a little of this and a little of that for leftovers kicking around, you may be able to to create a quick and easy lunch : a Chef Salad

Some of the ingrediants you can use to create your simple salad:

- greens: leftover lettuce of any type, or reduced at the produce dept., tossed salad
-turkey or chicken pieces ,( perhaps still left in the freezer from your Christmas holidays)
-ham pieces,( also leftovers from Christmas or deli ends)
-roast beef
-boiled eggs- sliced
-shredded cheese,( I always have a baggie in my freezer shredded)
-mushrooms-sliced
-tomatoes-sliced
-cucumbers
-shredded carrots

and off course your favorite dressing!

Castle on the River

CSI Experience Las Vegas

On our upcoming trip to Vegas-in two weeks-Gerry and I will be investigating a murder...well not technically, of course. We will be partaking in the CSI exhibit (based on the hugely popular television show and its various spin offs), at the MGM Grand, Las Vegas.

The CSI Experience involves you in the hands on science, the challenges and thrills involved in solving a crime mystery. At the exhibit you can be assigned to one of three different crime scenes each with a unique storyline and clues. During the experience you get to try advanced scientific technology, numerous scientific disciplines used by criminal investigators and forensic scientists today. Visitors will use the scientific process to identify evidence at the crime scene and determine which should be further studied. They will then analyze the evidence in a multidisciplinary crime lab with the help of forensic scientists. The evidence gathered will help formulate a working hypothesis –which can be then validated and communicated to their superiors.

During the exhibit the visitors can try on various scientific jobs including toxicology, forensic anthropology, forensic entomology, forensic pathology, forensic art, firearm and tool mark identification and well as blood splatter analysis. It is a perfect opportunity to try different jobs that we only see on television.

The overall goal of the exhibit is to promote public awareness in the advances in forensic science and advance critical thinking skills. Also, it will be the perfect opportunity to see whether we can believe everything we see on TV.

Counting Your Dollars

A smart way to consolidate your finances and get an overview of your money situation is to monitor your spending. It can be sobering, even shocking, when you actually write down—to the exact dollar—what you spend money on every day. Yet, financial planning is very common. In fact, most families claim to partake in some form of financial planning. The amount of of debt in this country speaks to a different reality though.

Most people, contrary to their claims, simply do not keep track of the dollars they spend. They gripe and moan about a $100 utility bill, and then will gladly drop twenties on various items throughout the day. What's to blame here is not ignorance, but rather a culture of debt. Our society, especially here in America, has come to view the global treasury has the best prepaid debit card. We can go as far into debt as we want, because we'll pay it off later. But later you—we—will have just as many debts and financial obligations as we do now, if not more. The best way to handle your financial situation is to keep track of your dollars now, on a day to day basis.

There are an abundance of web applications that will organize your finances for you, but you might be better off doing it yourself with nothing more than a piece of paper and a pen. Make a little spreadsheet for yourself, outlining each day of the week. Don't use Excel. Do it by hand (I'll explain why in a minute).

Calculate how much money you make in an average day. At the top of each of the blank days in your spreadsheet write this number. At the end of the day on Monday, write down how much money you spent underneath how much you made. Don't fudge the numbers. Add up every dollar you spent: breakfast, lunch, and dinner; prorated portions of your monthly bills, including credit card payments, car insurance, utilities, etc.; the amount of the gasoline you expended getting to work; your morning cup of coffee, your afternoon cup of coffee; your Happy Hour beer. All of it. Don't leave out anything.

The amount you spent in the day should surely not exceed the amount you earned. At least not habitually. Obviously, there are days when you must make a large payment on something. That's why you're keeping up with your expenses for the week. Come up with an average of how much you spend compared to how much you earn. If these numbers come up even you're in big trouble. Ball up that piece of paper and toss it in the recycling bin. It should feel cathartic to start from scratch. Start reducing your daily and weekly expenditures. It's the only way to plan realistically for the future.

As parents, it’s our job to set our kids up for success. Teaching them the most important financial lessons is one the best gifts you can give them – and for free. Here are seven lessons you can teach your kids to help them avoid debt.

Save part of all you earn. Saving for retirement is key. But, even before that, it’s important to have rainy day savings that can be accessed in case of an emergency. The perfect rainy day savings can cover a multitude of expenses including a major car repair, medical bills, and even living expenses following a job loss. Teach your kids to save money for big purchase so they’ll know the alternative to buying on credit. Show them how much it actually costs to put $500 on a credit card with 20% interest without paying the balance in full.

Always pay your bills on time. Not only will timely bill paying help your kids avoid debt, it also helps their credit score when those bills are listed on your credit report. Falling behind on any bills runs the risk of getting into debt because it’s not as easy to catch up as your kids might think. Let your kids borrow money from you and create a repayment schedule so they’ll understand how loans and loan repayment works.

Always know the balance on your accounts. Know how much money is in your checking and savings accounts and you will be less prone to overspend. Be aware of your credit card balances so you won’t spend more than you can afford to pay back. If your child has a savings account, show them how to check their balance online or by phone.

Never borrow more than you can afford to repay. For many people, breaking this rule is the beginning of years of debt payments and thousands of dollars paid in interest, money that could have been spent on anything, including fun! Teach your kids to only take on as much debt as they can handle even when the banks offer them much more, which they usually will!

Pay back your debts as quickly as possible. Minimum payments are easy and let you keep more of your income, but minimum payments also keep you in debt longer. Paying back debt faster may mean making some short-term sacrifices, but the debt will be paid sooner and with much less interest paid, leaving more for the things that matter the most.

Take care of your needs first and your wants second. Food, shelter, transportation, and clothing are a few of the most immediate needs. However, it’s important that you don’t justify spending more money by satisfying your needs with more than what’s necessary. For example, you don’t have to eat filet mignon for dinner. Keeping your living costs low lets you meet other major financial goals like building an emergency fund, saving for retirement, and paying off debt.

Loaning money can ruin your finances and your relationship. Loaning money is risky. What if you need the money by a certain date, say to pay your own bills, and the person doesn’t pay you back? Then you’ll have to figure out another way to pay your expenses. Co-signing a loan is just as risky as loaning the money yourself because if the other borrower doesn’t pay, it’s you on the hook for the payments.

Start teaching these financial lessons early. Repeat the lessons throughout their lives, making sure to keep it on their level. Most of all, make sure you’re living these financial lessons yourself.

The 5 Features Your Next Balance Transfer Card Needs

If you have accumulated a decent amount of debt on a variety of credit cards, you can save yourself thousands in potential interest rates by acquiring a new credit card that features great deals on balance transfers. You can pay off the old cards within the low interest period to improve your credit rating, pay off your debt and feel more financially secure. Look for these five features on your next balance transfer card.

Low or No Interest Rate

The benefit of a balance transfer credit card is the low interest rate. Look for a card that offers a low interest rate, such as under 5%. Many balance transfer cards offer an introductory interest rate of 0%. Although you will use the credit card primarily to pay off your old debt, be sure that the card also has a good interest rate after the introductory period so that you will not be surprised by huge interest charges when the card transitions from the introductory period to the regular period.

Long Balance Transfer Period

To get the best bang for your buck, look for a credit card that offers a long balance transfer period. This longer period will provide you with the necessary time to pay off your balances. Some cards only provide a three month to a six month transfer period. Other cards provider a longer balance transfer period, such as a twelve month or twenty-four month period. Since your goal is to pay off your debt at the lowest price possible, a long balance transfer period is crucial to your success.

Low or No Balance Transfer Fee

Some balance transfer credit cards provide a 0% interest rate, but then gouge you with high balance transfer fees. These fees can quickly add up. For example, if you have large balances on multiple credit cards, a 3% fee on the amount of debt you transfer can quickly add up to hundreds or thousands in fees. Compare the interest rate and the balance transfer fees to ensure that you get the best deal. Try to obtain the card that provides the best balance between a low interest rate and low fees.

Cash Back

Some balance transfer credit cards offer cash back. This is more common with balance transfer cards that have balance transfer fees. The cash back on balance transfers can help offset the cost of transferring the balances. Compare the amount of the balance fees and the interest rate that it will take to fund your balance transfer. Then subtract the amount of any applicable cash back offers. Compare this number to the amount that it would cost you to use another card that has lower fees but no cash back. If a card that does not provide you with cash back is cheaper, you may want to go with that card. However, even if it is a little more expensive to use the cash back card, you may want to choose the cash back card to have access to this feature. Some balance transfer cards also offer cash back on purchases which may make it more attractive for future use. Read the fine print for any restrictions on cash back, such as cash back that is only for gas or utility payments.

Other Freebies

While your temporary goal is to save money on paying off your existing debt, you may want to look for additional attractive features that the card offers that will be valuable to you in the future. Some cards provide you with discounts for groceries or healthcare. Other provide free travel agent assistance.
