Review: Broan ULTRA GREEN™ Single-Speed Fan

Sunday, March 15, 2015

Sometimes it is not the difficulty of the journey but the rock in the shoe that makes the biggest difference. I like this saying as it shows that sometimes changing the small things can make life easier. While changing a bathroom fan is nothing to boast about, we did recently replace our old dusty fan from the 80's in our bathroom with Broan Ultra-Green Single Speed Fan.

We did a little before and after and found this one to be so much more quieter and more efficient, and of course much less dusty. This is one of the quieter fans you can buy and it performs very well, plus its more energy efficient and therefore not only better for the environment but also better for our pocket books. While no one will be able to tell we made this small change, to us its great since we wont feel like we are blasting off into space every time we enter the bathroom.

One For The Bucket List : The Richard Perry Ride Along Experience - Las Vegas

Saturday, March 14, 2015

It's great when a vacation allows you to experience some things that have always been on your 'bucket list'- the list of things you want to do before you kick the proverbial bucket. While in Vegas, we will be accomplishing one such experience with a Ride-Along, by riding shot-gun in a 2 seater NASCAR driven by a professional instructor for a 3 lap qualifying run at speeds of up to 160 mph....I don't even want to look up what that is in km/h...but is fast! Riding with an instructor is great since you will be able to get to experience how a race car is meant to be driven and what it is capable of.

This will be a truly fascinating experience, because who hasn't pretended to ride in a race car? Gerry and I are super excited to check this off our list. Vegas just got a whole lot more exciting.

**Experience your own real life racing thrills by riding shotgun in a 2-seat NASCAR race car driven by one of our professional instructors for a 3-lap qualifying run at speeds up to 160mph!

The Ride-Along program is operated at locations nationwide.
If purchased in the form of a gift card the rides are given on a first come, first serve basis between the hours of 9am and 4pm on days RPDE is on track. Before heading to the track call 1.800.237.3889 to confirm dates/times. Some tracks additionally offer reserved date/time Ride-Along experiences.

Book Review: From Middle Class to Millionaire

Friday, March 6, 2015

When life gets busy it is more difficult to find time to read. This is why when I do have time for a book, I like to make sure it is one that I can learn something from.

Recently I read, From Middle Class to Millionaire: The Money Handbook for the Other 99% by David Lester. This book identifies the money obstacles that the everyday Canadian has to deal with as well as helps you build solutions to do just that. The book identifies the challenges of David's four “Ps” that the middle class faces and tries to find ways to re-catch the prosperity of yesteryear.

While I was not much into investing part of the book, I really enjoyed the later chapters and the practical advice given in an non technical language. I love books on saving money, so in the near future, I hope to read the author's first book – “I (heart) money". Be sure to also check out his blog I Heart Money. David offers some great free reading tips on it!

Also be sure to see his other book available: I Heart Money.

Protecting Your Home on a Tight Budget

Home security systems are a crucial component of any home. It is important for every homeowner that their home be safe from burglars. However, after the money used in creating the home into what it is, most homeowners are left with a severe budgetary shortfalls. This creates a need to come up with a security solution that does not cost a fortune.

In the past, securing your home meant spending a lot of money to have security experts come hard-wire your house, agreeing to a massive contract and paying huge monthly fees to run the systems.

However, with the advent of modern technology, simple, inexpensive and creative home security solutions are fast gaining traction among homeowners.
Some of the inexpensive solutions to consider when looking to keep your home burglar free include:

1.  Use of DIY security solutions

With technology making inroads among the greater populace today, a new wave of smart and do-it-yourself friendly gadgets are increasingly changing the way people protect their property.

These security solutions are built around very simple plug and play friendly sensors that are compatible with Smart phones. They are mobile and allow you control over how you want to protect your property.

Examples of these include low cost high technology solutions like easily install-able door and window break in sensors, infrared motion detectors and remote controls.

Most importantly, these security solutions do not require contracts and usually require no monthly fees making it much cheaper to secure  your home.

2.  Well Lit Exteriors

According to security experts, most house burglaries can be stopped by having well lit exteriors. It is important that you eliminate dark and shadowy spots on your yards by eliminating any heavy vegetation that might be there.

Investing in relatively inexpensive good motion sensor lights has been known to deter common house burglars. Another option would be to use timers on interior lighting systems.

3.  Dummy systems

Sometimes all it takes to deter a potential burglar is the idea that he will be caught. Home security system stickers and signs and false security cameras are particularly handy as part of a dummy home security system.

Real-looking surveillance equipment and home protection is very cheap.
Flashing LED lights and cables would make the cameras look functional and hence give potential burglars the impression of a well protected home.

4.  Affordable Home Security System options

Affordable home security systems in San Francisco and other cities are offered under specific packages by security companies. Various affordable home security packages offer an array of features and equipment to meet different homeowner needs and preferences.

Though slightly costly then the other options, this option offers the most security and peace of mind as it comes with 24/7 surveillance, comprehensive security and easy to use security systems.

5.  Making a thorough inventory

Another cheap security solution would be to document all your home’s contents with special attention on the valuables. With a video camera in tow, you should take a tour of your premises and then store a copy of the tape in your safety deposit box. This inventory provides proof for your home insurance company and  the police in the event of a burglary.

Save Money the Fun Way- The Joy of Making Your Own Clothes

Making our own clothes seems to be something of a lost art in 2015. Yet, our grandparents and their grandparents had all perfected the art of sewing, needlework, and fabrics. It’s a great way to save money. But, it can also make you shine out a like a star. After all, fashion is incredibly dull. Everyone looks the same. What could be better than creating your own clothes? You’ll stretch that dollar further and look fantastic in the process.

Making Your Own Clothes: It is Easier than What You Think!

Creating your own garments doesn't have to be a painstaking nor difficult task. On the contrary, it’s rather simple to do. You can make your own clothes and look fabulous in the process. However, one killer piece of advice we can give, is that these things take time!

What Do You Want to Make?

Making sense of what you want to make is important. You may want to start off small. So, create a simple t-shirt or skirt. These can be fun to make and simple to do for novices to the world of home sewing. If you’re a newbie to the world of home sewing, it may be best to invest in some cheaper pieces of materials. Check out thrift stores and grab patterns that you love. Avoid expensive materials while you are learning. It’s a sure-fire way of wasting money!

Invest in a Sewing Machine

One of the greatest allies that you will have is a sewing machine. Of course, you can undergo the painstaking needle work by hand. But, this can be more prone to errors. There is a wide range of sewing machines that you can choose from. Check out the top rated Sergers or Singers to find out which you feel more comfortable with. Of course, you can seek out Kenmore’s and Janomes. It all depends on your budget and how much you want to spend.

Spend Time with Your Machine

When it comes to sewing machines, you won’t get it right first time. But, spending the time learning how to maneuver your sewing machine is a must. If funds are tight, take a look online at Youtube tutorials. These can help you pick up some great tips. You’ll be a master seamstress before you know it!

Finding Patterns

Keeping it simple is the key to making your foray into the world of clothing making a joyful one. Okay, you may want to make a gorgeous wool coat. But, in the early days it may be wise to keep it simple. After all, you need to hone the basics first. There is a wealth of sewing patterns online that are free to use. You only have to download some basic patterns to get you started. Of course, as you become more competent, you can buy sewing patterns in the form of magazines for your more complicated garments.

Book Review: Web Design with HTML, CSS, JavaScript and jQuery Set by Jon Duckett

Tuesday, March 3, 2015

Review by: Jon

A two-book set for web designers and front-end developers

This two-book set combines the titles HTML & CSS: Designing and Building Web Sites and JavaScript & jQuery: Interactive Front-End Development. Together these two books form an ideal platform for anyone who wants to master HTML and CSS before stepping up to JavaScript and jQuery.

Our reviewer Jon says:

- the books are nicely laid out and easy to read with visual graphics, not a plain text black and white type of writing style
- downloadable code allows you to easily follow along with the examples and tutorials in the book
- price is well worth it
- can be used by a person new to coding working on their very first webpage to people who are working in the industry that have built many websites
- first book will take you through HTML & CSS concepts to build a basic webpage then the second book, Javascript & JQuery, will take you through more advanced concepts to add interactivity to your webpages (as the names suggest)
- if you are looking at building websites as a hobby or career, these 2 books are a must!

Sheraton Cavalier - Saskatoon, Saskatchewan

Monday, March 2, 2015

Since we do not live close to the airport, when we go for vacations we usually break up our trip by staying a night in a hotel before we depart and after we arrive. It helps break up what would otherwise be a very long trip and makes us fresh for our return home. ( Home being 5 hours from Saskatoon).

When we return from our trip to Vegas we will be staying at the Sheraton Cavalier in Saskatoon. This great 3.5 star hotel in located in the center of town close to several attractions such as the Ukrainian Museum of Canada and Midtown Plaza. Families will love this hotel as it features a water park and water slides, and this is perfect for any kid or just a kid at heart.

Adults will love the Free WiFi as well as the 24 hour front desk (you never know when you will need them) or the 24 hour business center- there is even a little coffee shop for a little early morning pick me up on our way home.

The rooms are decorated in plush decor and feature all the amenities that you have come to expect from a world class hotel. The hotel is also a Starwood member which goes a long way to making this stay a little more affordable.
And always be sure to check out their fun offers for extra savings!
