The Britannia Mine Museum, B.C

The Britannia Mine Museum is located in Britannia Beach, BC., and is an easy 45 min drive north of Vancouver. They are open year round, Monday-Friday 10 am to 3:30 pm and Sat-Sun and Holidays 10 am to 4 pm. Tours run 45 min for a guided tour offered throughout the day. Most visitors spend another hour after the tour to explore the museum on their own too.

There are exhibits, gold panning, an award winning film and historical buildings on site. The museum has historical machinery and heritage buildings.  You can see a lot of interesting machines such as a lime tank and mucking machine. You can also take a mine train for the underground tour, go through an early tunnel and the tour guides will describe early mining efforts and you can see working drills and mucking machines. Another portion, is panning for gold and whatever you find you can keep! This looks like it will be an  interesting visit since we also live in a mining town.

Dump Find For the Old Truck

The back of Gerry's truck that he hauls with, had  rusted out wheel wells.

On one of his trips to the dump though he found a broken box liner that someone had discarded, where they had cut out the floor.. so he thought that would work perfect for his truck and he snagged it and brought it home.

Here is the BEFORE and AFTER

How To Shop Trends On a Budget

Shopping for trends tend to be expensive and short lived. Why purchase into a designer label trend when it'll be out of style and out of season in a few months? We've collected 4 foolproof ways to shop for trendy shopping pieces with more bang for your buck.
1. Classic silhouettes: Pleats? Raw edge denim? Kitschy emoji dad hats? It's hard enough to keep up with the latest styles making their way onto the market, let alone believing in one long enough to buy into it. A surefire way to make your trendy new favorites last through the summer (and hopefully into the next) is shopping for pieces with timeless fits and silhouettes. A camisole style summer dress with a pleated skirt, like the Kiss Me Hello Skater Dress in navy, is just simple enough to wear day and night. The style isn't so bold that it can't be disguised as a skirt when layered under an easy t-shirt.
2. Two in ones: Set dresses are little more than matching tops and skirts, sold together. Essentially, you're buying two separates for the price of one. In the summer, shop this trend in feminine lace or classic stripes with a crop top + skirt duo. You can mix and match the pieces with other summer-ready pieces in your closet. That's 3 different outfits for one!

3. Layerability: One pieces have been dominating our Instagram feeds for a while now, but just how practical are they? One word: very. While a wide-leg floral print jumpsuit doesn't seem like the most reasonable purchase, a jumpsuit with subtle details in a neutral shade provides endless possibilities. Jumpsuits can be worn alone for warmer days, layered over a basic tee for more cover up, or disguised as pants with a tunic top. Try a jumpsuit with a trouser leg in a relaxed fit and discrete lace up sides.

4. Versatile swimwear: It sounds strange, but hear me out. Bodysuits and crop tops have made a major comeback, and in reality they're not much different than the swimsuits we have stored away in our closets. Shopping for swimwear that can double as a top during cooler months makes them one of our favorite socially acceptable trends to wear all year around. A monokini with a lace-up plunge neck, like the Deep Cut Lace Up Monokini in olive, looks slimming and simple tucked into your favorite pair of denim.

So What's New With Us?

Haven't done an "about us" post for a while. But do post more frequent tidbits on Facebook- so please follow us on there if you aren't already.

We have our oldest daughter coming from Honduras to stay with us for over a month, and Gerry will be going to pick her up at the airport- ( 5 hours+ away) next weekend.

Another daughter will be coming to stay for a week in July. Ria, the one staying for the extended visit will be staying in the house, and the other daughter, Erika will be staying a few days at the lake in our RV and then a few days at home.. they wanted to have the camping experience out at the lake in the RV...so we treated them to a few days out there. They'll come with their 2 pets - a dog and rabbit, and come from Calgary, Alberta- another far drive for them.

Gerry has been super busy with renovating the RV. We have changed out all the green carpet and the lino almost, and replacing with laminate and carpet. We got great deals on both so happy with that.. but alot of work. The RV has also been completely re-painted in beige, and he has been painting fixtures that were once gold, as well as door handles and hinges. It is our second home after all. Also, going to be building some shelves in one of the cupboards. Need more staorage for canned and dry goods. Will be traveling again down south this Fall although we haven't yet decided which way we will be heading.

Looks like we are also planning a trip to the west coast either in July or August to  B.C- would be Victoria, and as well wanted to go up the B.C coast out of Vancouver to see Squamish and Whistler. So at least 6 days we're thinking. So watch for posts soon on what we're planning on seeing!

We're having to spend a few dollars soon as well on re-doing our front fence and gate.. it's really not seeing good days.. the wood is rotting so going to replace that and paint it. We have alot of fence around our yard and in the front, but everything is from original owners  that Gerry bought the place from years back... and he said they never used treated lumber so it's had it's troubles from the weather. He's looking for someone though to dig some of the holes though for the fence posts as they will be about 4 feet down, and too hard to do by hand.

Staying busy though.

See the US dollar for us Canadians has been dropping. We are planning to buy $$ when they are more to our advantage but we're not happy with it being .76 to our dollar right now and hoping it will get better.

However, on to other things today. Selling some things, doing some housework, some blog posts, and maybe after that doing some sitting around in the sun! Love the heat of the sun- we need more days like this up north!

Five Steps to Your Healthiest Summer BBQ

Eighty-two percent of Americans own a grill or smoker, according to the Hearth, Patio and Barbecue Association's (HPBA) 2009 "Barbecue Lifestyle, Usage and Attitude" study. So, it is safe to say that regardless of your dietary preferences, chances are you — or someone in your household — is a self-professed grill master.

With Labor Day approaching and summer coming to an end soon, we want to help make sure that the last BBQs of summer 2013 are top notch. According to the HPBA study, Labor Day is the third most popular American grilling holiday (trailing Fourth of July and Memorial Day).

Here are five steps to make sure that you not only serve delicious foods that are healthy too (i.e. packed with essential micronutrients and void of harmful toxins, unnecessary sugars, and potential cancer causers).

1. Choose a Quality Protein.

Whenever possible, choose organic, 100-percent pasture-raised or grass-fed meats from a local farm or reputable butcher. When you choose these meats, you can be sure that the animals were not given GMO feed, antibiotics or hormones. Burger lovers, beware of non-organic meats that contain the infamous pink slime (an estimated 70 percent of supermarket ground beef). When choosing poultry, opt for vegetarian-fed (i.e. chickens that were not fed meat) or free-range poultry.

2. Consider Different Kinds of Buns.
Due to gluten sensitivities and the prevalence of GMO wheat, traditional rolls and hot dog buns might be something you are feeling wary of - and for good reason!

Here are some great alternatives:

Lettuce Wraps: More and more restaurants are serving burgers with lettuce wraps. They are lower in carbs and calories, but still just as delicious.
Store-Bought Gluten-Free Bread: Try Food for Life Gluten Free Rice Almond Bread, Lydia's Organics Sunflower Seed Bread or Sami's Bakery Millet And Flax Bread.

Coconut Wraps: Create a delectable roll up with wraps made from organic coconut. They are low in carbs and can transform your burger into a burger burrito in no time! Try Pure Wraps which are organic and non-GMO.

3. Don't Get Blindsided by Condiments.
While many condiments were once homemade, those found in the stores today are full of thickening agents, gels, GMO oils and sweeteners. Don't ruin your high-quality protein by loading it up with inferior condiments.

Here are the main three you should keep an eye on:
Mayonnaise: Most store-bought mayonnaise contains canola or soybean oil  -- two overwhelmingly GMO crops in the United States. Even mayo that boasts that it's made with "olive oil" contains primarily either canola or soybean oil. (Ninety-three percent of the soybeans grown in the U.S. are genetically modified.) Even organic mayo, while GMO free, is highly processed. If you've never made your own mayo, this is your chance! It's quick, and you'll only need simple ingredients you can find at your local grocery store. Watch our video showing how simple it is to make homemade mayo in under 5 minutes.

Ketchup: Grocery store ketchup is filled with added sugar. A study in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry found that organic ketchup contains up to 60 percent more cancer-preventing lycopene per gram than conventional type. Here's how to make your very own homemade organic ketchup: Combine organic tomato paste, organic white vinegar, organic garlic and onion powder, organic allspice, organic cayenne pepper, unrefined sea salt, organic pepper, and pure stevia extract. If you would rather purchase an organic version at the store, try Rejuvenate Raw Live Ketchup.

Mustard: Go organic. The white vinegar in conventional mustard is usually derived from corn, which - unless it is labeled organic - 88 percent of the corn grown in the U.S. is genetically modified.  To ensure that you and your BBQ guests avoid GMOs, a great option to try is Annie's Organic Yellow Mustard.

4. Be Smart About Side Dishes.
You already know how to choose the best protein and even what condiments to look out for, but side dishes are just as important to pay attention to.

Pasta Salad: Pasta made with wheat flour will raise your blood sugar higher than almost any other food. Ninety-nine percent of today's wheat is the result of an unhealthy, intense genetic manipulation of the wheat of our grandparents' generation. Instead try different grains, such as Ancient Quinoa Harvest pastas, or Truroots Ancient Grains pasta made with quinoa, amaranth and brown rice.  And swap out the mayo in the recipe with organic Greek yogurt.

Drop the Coleslaw in Favor of Sauerkraut: Sauerkraut is an excellent source of beneficial live bacteria which assist in the digestive process. Sauerkraut also has fewer calories than many slaws, and it leaves out the sugar as well.  Our favorite is Bubbies Brand.

5. Master the Grill.
According to the National Cancer Institute, charring meat can cause Heterocyclic amines (HCAs) carcinogens (cancer causing substances) to form. They get into your food when dripping meat juices cause the grilling surface or coals to flare up.  Unfortunately, while the flames are adding flavor, they are also engulfing the meat or fish in toxic vapors.

Here Are Some Tips to Guarantee a Safer Grill:
- To avoid charring the meat, choose marinades made with lemon as it helps change the acidity of the meat and prevent some of the carcinogens from sticking.
- Turn down the heat, and raise the rack. Temperatures over 300 degrees trigger HCA formation.
- Turn the meat with tongs. Using a fork can puncture the meat, which causes drippings to flare up the flame.
- Flip meat frequently. Turning every few minutes has been shown to greatly reduce HCAs.
- Avoid overcooking. Chargrilled pieces contain the most toxins. Cut off any charred sections.
Good luck, healthy grilling and enjoy your BBQs!
