Healthy Benefits of Water

For those of us that just plain hate water, let me give you a few reasons of why you need to drink it anyway.

1. Making Your Kidneys Work Alleviates The Pressure On Your Liver

Yeah, I know. It sounds so stinking scientific. Just follow me on this. Do you know the job of your liver? The liver’s main job is to convert stored fat to energy (aka the metabolism of fat and we all know we want that term “metabolism”!)

So, what does that have to do with our kidneys? Another job of the liver is to help out the kidneys! Kidneys need plenty of water to properly work. So, if the kidneys aren’t getting enough water, they can’t work to their full potential, and the liver has to do their job. That means the liver has less time to work on METABOLISM! So, you are storing fat instead of burning it.

2. Give Your Body Water To Drop Water Weight!

What?? Sounds very strange doesn’t it? How in the world will putting more water into my body get rid of water? Let me just break it down into mommy terms. :-)

When you first start drinking the correct amount of water, it feels as if you are pregnant all over again! That bathroom is your new best friend and you have been to visit it so many times that you are beginning to wonder if you have a urinary tract infection or something. What is really happening is that all those years that you haven’t been drinking water, your body has been storing the little bit that it gets. Why? Because it needs it and is unsure of when it will get it again. AKA, that 100 dollar bill you have been holding onto for 3 years because you just might need it and have no idea when you will get another one!

Ta da! Now you are giving your body water so it flushes out the stores of it and no longer holds onto excess water. As long as you continue to give it water, the constant potty runs and the bloating will go away. :-)

3. Water Is Better Than Oil Of Olay!

Yep, better and loads cheaper! Water flushes out the impurities in your skin leaving you with a clear and glowing complexion! Seriously! Plus, I don’t have any scientific knowledge to back this up, but experience shows me that when I am getting enough water my psoriasis acts MUCH better.

Water is all the ingredient your sagging skin needs to re-babytise. (Liked that word didn’t you? Yes, I made it up. LOL!) If your skin has become elephant like due to losing weight or getting older, keeping it hydrated helps to plump it back up!

4. Water Decreases Your Appetite!

Before you eat, drink a large glass of water. It fills you up a bit, which causes you to eat less. Plus, lots of time that hunger you feel is actually thirst!

5. Play A Math Game To Find Your Ideal Water Amount!

So, how much water should you be drinking? It all depends on your weight. You figure your weight and divide it by two. That answer is the amount of water (in ounces) you should be drinking. For example: I weigh (yes, I am going to tell you) 160 pounds. I should be drinking 80 ounces of water each day.

Kelli was in the military where her claim-to-fame was 46 push ups a minute. :-) When training for the Ms Fitness America Contest, she was able to do push ups with her legs up on her shoulders. :-) At the height of her iron pumping addiction, Kelli had 3% body fat! Yes, had… now Kelli is working very hard to get under the status of “over-weight” and cheering on others in her boat!

Seven Secrets to Making More at Your Yard Sale

Tuesday, February 23, 2010

The following is a guest post from best selling author Jamie Novak founder of BiteSizeLiving.com

When you’re ready to put together a yard sale here are seven secrets to bring in the bog bucks! With just a little extra effort you can double your profit. Try these insider tips to make your clutter, I mean treasures; so irresistible buyers will pay more to take them home.

1. Set aside a collection of items and make a sign that reads, “free with purchase.” Everyone loves to get something for free, that’s probably one of the reasons you need to have a sale in the first place. By having a “free” table you can make signs that read “free stuff” and bring in a lot more traffic.

2. Go big. Plan one with the neighbors. The larger the sale, the more people you will attract.

3. Place “man stuff” near the curb, think golf clubs, workout gear and power tools. If you can catch his eye with stuff he’ll be more likely to stop and browse, giving his wife even more time to shop.

4. To entice buyers to stay around a little longer, offer popcorn and lemonade. The longer shoppers browse the more stuff they’ll find to buy.

5. Make items look new and shiny! Run a towel with Amoral or another polishing cream over plastic items to make them shine. Place new batteries in battery-operated items. Plug in electrical items and attach the instruction manual to it.

6. At a garage sale, you need to have some change on hand to start with. A good amount is two $10.00 bills, six $5.00 bills, twenty $1.00 bills, and $10 in assorted change. Placing the coins in a muffin tin or egg carton to make it easy to grab the right change.

7. Set up shop by grouping items together and make a little sign with a suggestion. For example, tie a few board games together and add the popcorn maker then place a sign that says “family game night.” Take a picnic basket with a throw blanket and a cutting board then make a sign that reads “great for a day at the park.”

Most importantly, schedule a charity to come pickup the unsold items to prevent them from reentering your home!

Jamie’s newest book Stop Throwing Money Away is on shelves now and she hosts an online community at http://www.bitesizeliving.com/

Review and Giveaway-KettleWorx

Monday, February 22, 2010

I was quite excited to open my package from KettleWorx, ( as above-I chose the 5lb kettle ball).
I always love to try new fitness and health products.
KettleWorx is a program that uses the kettlebell as a tool to deliver Cardio, Core and Resistance all in short 20 minute workouts.  There are even some 10 minute dvds that I recieved to start out with. Let me tell you, with a 5lb weighted bell, I felt it the next day. The dvds feature younger than I  men and women. However the exercises are simple to follow and not a complicated routine. That I liked.
It is said that if one follows the  program for 20 Minutes 3 x a Week, in six short weeks they will change their body in a positive way. I'm not sure how dedicated I will get with my full time job, but will try to squeeze what time in that I can with it- it is a great program!
Kettle Worx offers many testimonials, and you can order just the kettle bells or the complete packages.

A short list of celebrity kettlebell users…

• Lance Armstrong

• Katherine Heigl

• Jennifer Lopez

• Kim Cattrall

• Matthew McConaughey

• Penelope Cruz

• Geri Halliwell

• Jennifer Aniston

• Sylvester Stallone

Kettle Worx would love to give one of our lucky readers a chance to win their own mini fitness center, from USA or Canada.

A Not So Great Nature Walk

Sunday, February 21, 2010

I go out for the odd skidoo ride every now and again. But a few weeks back, Gerry had broke down with the skidoo, was alone, and ended up walking 9 miles back to town. He wasn't in the best of shape when he got home, and hadn't taken the cell phone. We went out for another ride today, through the bush, and out on the lake- always see a few animal tracks - saw wolf tracks today. Not any skidooers.
After we had gotten home, and did a few errands for the day, Gerry decided he wanted to go out again on his own. He took the cell phone this time, but there was little I could do when he called. He had broke down again. The skidoo slowly slowed to a stop while he was riding. He was about a mile out this time. The skidoo remains out in the bush, till he can get my brother's skidoo to haul it back.He wants to trade it in now- just too unreliable.

                                                        Out On the Trail

Me on our skidoo-posed for shot- I usually ride on the back!

***** Update: went out this evening to pick up the skidoo- towed it back, and it started- but certainly not wanting to go through that uncertainty again.

Dyson DC25 Ball Review and Giveaway (Canada only)

Dyson recently sent me one of their newer vacumms: the Dyson DC25 Ball.
( Their vacumms can all be viewed on their site right here.)

Let me tell you, it was like having a new toy to play with!
This is a very lightweight vacumm and took some getting used to as it has a ball at the front that swings around as I vacumm, moving in all directions. It picks up great and has an easy to empty canister- with no bags required .

All Dyson vacuums feature patented Root Cyclone technology – which means that they never lose suction. At the on set, James Dyson was frustrated by how vacuums would lose suction over time, even during a single day of cleaning…and so he developed technology so that they Dyson vacuums are powerful and never lose suction – hence working like vacuums should!!

Also, although each Dyson is designed to work on all floors and all types of clean-ups – Animal models come with a mini turbine attachment specifically designed for pet hair pickup and embedded dirt for a more thorough clean.

Finally, all Dyson vacuums are certified asthma and allergy friendly by the Asthma Society of Canada. Thanks to a HEPA filter and the Root Cyclone technology, Dyson vacuums are designed to reduce allergens – and in fact, the air expelled from a Dyson has up to 150 times less mould and bacteria than the air in a room.

Dyson would love to give one Canadian the opportunity to try one of their own vacumms as well!
We will make a random draw from Random.org on Feb.28, 2010 from all entries recieved.

How to Save Money on Food - Tips to Keep Your Produce Fresh

Sunday, February 14, 2010

How do you save money on food? There's nothing more frustrating than opening up your fridge and seeing all that expensive produce rotting in the fridge drawer. If you're tired of throwing away moldy and rotten produce there are a few simple things you can do to prolong its freshness. Our fridge temperature is probably one of the last things that's ever on our mind. The temperature inside your fridge should be between 32F and 41F. If it's too warm, food won't be chilled correctly and bacteria will start to multiply. While if its too cold, ice particles will form within the food.Avoid storing fresh produce in the plastic packaging in which it's sold. Air should circulate around fruit and vegetables to prevent them from sweating and becoming soggy.

Potatoes:
Stop potatoes from sprouting by storing them in a cool, dry place with a few apples. If you've peeled too many or have peeled them in preparation for cooking, put them in a bowl. Then cover them with water, and place the bowl in the fridge.

Lettuce: This is one exception to the no-plastic rule because it seems to thrive if it's kept loose in a large plastic bag in the fridge. A good way to revive limp lettuce is to slice off a sliver of the stem and place the lettuce in a bowl of cold water. Individual leaves can be revived if you sprinkle them with cold water, wrap them in a tea towel and pop them in the fridge for an hour or so.

Carrots, beetroots and turnips: Cut off any green, leafy tops because these will continue to draw nutrients from the roots. Like all root vegetables, carrots will last longer if they're kept in a cold, dry, dark place with good ventilation.

Lemons: After you've cut a lemon in half, place the halves cut side down on a saucer. Then cover them with an inverted glass and store them in a cool place.

Celery:
Celery starts to lose its flavor as soon as it's washed. The best way to store a piece of celery is to stand the stalk upright in a glass of water before placing it in the fridge.

Mushrooms: Store mushrooms in a cool, dark place, but not the fridge. I find that they last longer if they are wiped dry and laid on a piece of paper towel

Onions: Onions are easy to store. Just put them into a vegetable basket or wire rack. The trick to preventing them from rotting is to keep the bulbs apart so that air can circulate around them.

Tomatoes: Some people like their tomatoes rock hard, while others prefer them soft. Green tomatoes, along with any that haven't fully ripened, are best stored in a dark place. Exposing them to sunlight simply makes them soft not ripe. To ripen them, place them either in a brown paper bag with an apple or in a drawer, stalk side up, and leave them until they've turned rosy red.

Apples: Remove unblemished apples to prevent them from contaminating the others with their rot.Saving money on food is more important than ever before, especially with produce prices at all time highs. Why not give these tips a try? Over the course of a year you'll be surprised at how much you'll actually save on your grocery bill.

Is Bankruptcy Right For Me?

In these economic times, many people are beginning to consider filing bankruptcy as a solution to their financial situation. Bankruptcy helps many people who find themselves in financial trouble, but it is important to understand the basics of bankruptcy before making any decisions.

What is Bankruptcy?

Bankruptcy is a legal process by which a person or business legally declares that they cannot pay their debts. The person who files bankruptcy meets with a bankruptcy judge to receive a discharge of their debts or to work out a payment schedule, depending on the type of bankruptcy the person files. The two most common types of bankruptcy filed by individuals are Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 bankruptcy.

How Can Bankruptcy Help Me?

Bankruptcy can eliminate most if not all or your unsecure debt. Additionally, you will receive an automatic stay from your creditors. This means that the court will order your creditors to stop all actions against you.

The Automatic Stay from the court legally prohibits creditors from taking ANY action against you. Basically, you can immediately stop any of the following:

· Calls from your creditors

· Any collections against you

· Wage garnishment

Should I File Bankruptcy?

Some times, the people who need bankruptcy the most do not even know it. The following list is common signs that bankruptcy might be a good option for you.

· Your debt is more than your annual salary, not including house and car debts.

· You have to buy basic items like food, clothes, gas, etc on credit.

· Your medical bills total over $5,000.

· Your debt payments are more than 25% of your take-home pay.

· You are being sued.

· Your wages are being garnished.

· Your debts continue to increase every month.

· You are considering getting a loan to pay debt.

· You are often late on your payments.

Filing bankruptcy is an important decision that you should make only after careful consideration. You should seek professional advice before making any decisions on bankruptcy.

8 Tips to Saving Money When Buying an Xbox

Wednesday, February 10, 2010

Have you ever wanted to buy an Xbox console but don't want to spend a fortune? How do you know what to buy with the Xbox so you don't waste money on worthless accessories and bad games? Follow these eight tips below and you can get an Xbox system for less and not waste time and money on bad extras.

1. Buy the Xbox Used: Xbox's are not longer being manufactured so you pay a higher price for a new console. Buy a used system that has been cleaned and tested. A used console will usually work just as well, but will save you about $50.

2. Buy Online: The best prices on Xbox consoles are online. You might have to shop around to find the best prices, but they are out there. Comparison shopping sights are a great place to start. Plus, when you shop online you usually won't have to pay sales tax. But watch out for high shipping! It can eat into a lot of the savings if you aren't careful.

3. Bundle Games and Accessories: Buy games and accessories at the same time you buy the Xbox. Many retailers give discounts on bundled items. And Shipping is almost always less than if you bought everything seperately. This makes a big difference when it comes to the controllers and other heavy items.

4. Buy Used Games: Buying used games is a great way to save money. They will usually be at least 50 percent less than the game was new and with many Xbox games the discounts are more than 75 percent! Be sure to buy games that are in good condition though. If the game has a bunch of scratches it might not load, or might break later in the game. Be sure you see a clear description of the game's condition before you buy it.

5. Read Game Reviews: There are a lot of games for the Xbox, and to be honest many of them are no good. Do a little bit of research into the games before you buy them. What are critics saying? Or better yet actual gamers? Many websites like gamerankings.com and gamestats.com give overall rankings for Xbox games. Some good video games to start with are: Halo, Splinter Cell, Project Gotham Racing, and Call of Duty.

6. Buy Games that Interest You: Reviews can only take you so far because the critics might have different opinions than you. If you love skateboarding, you will probably enjoy a skateboarding game. If you son is obsessed with Spiderman, he will probably enjoy a Spiderman game. Even if the reviews aren't very good.

7. Buy Microsoft Accessories: You will probably want an extra controller, or memory card, or some other accessory to go along with your Xbox console. When at all possible, but accessories made by Microsoft. They will be more expensive initially but many third party accessories (especially controllers) will break on you. Microsoft's controllers and accessories will cost more upfront but definitely be worth it because they last longer too.

8. Buy Useful Accessories: There are lots of accessories made for the Xbox, but many of them are not worth your money. The most important extra accessory to buy is a controller. Each console comes with one controller but if you want to play with friends, you will need an extra (or three if you really want to have a good time). Memory cards for the Xbox are not as important as other systems because the Xbox has a built in hard drive. You will only need a memory card if you want to bring saved data to another Xbox.

Follow these 8 tips and you will save money and start enjoying your Xbox console, games, and accessories

Review and Giveaway! Select Comfort Specialty Pillow

Tuesday, February 9, 2010

Valentine’s Day is coming up and there is nothing better than curling up next to the one you love. Unless they snore or toss and turn. Below are a few great sleeping products for a better night's rest for you.

Snoring

According to Sleep Expert and Select Comfort’s Vice President of Sleep Innovation and Clinical Research, Pete Bils, nearly forty-five percent of adults snore on occasion and about 25 percent snore habitually. It’s a problem that can affect both the snorer, and the partner. A somewhat softer mattress and a carefully fitted pillow designed to encourage a better sleeping posture have helped many. Or use a pillow that promotes natural head and neck alignment to open the airway (The Medi-Comfort Snore Reducer Foam Pillows by Select Comfort).

Tossing and Turning

Is your partner a restless sleeper? If so, he or she could be keeping you up at night. According to Sleep Expert and Select Comfort’s Vice President of Sleep Innovation and Clinical Research, Pete Bils, an overly active sleeper certainly can cause angst for couples. While there are some sleep disorders that feature periodic movements (and are treatable), most of the time tossing and turning is the result of discomfort. Head, neck or shoulder discomfort may indicate the wrong pillow. Consider getting a pillow that helps support your head (Down or Down Alternative pillow by Select Comfort)

****I received the Medi-Comfort Snore Reducer Foam Pillow  as a sample.

Gerry is the snorer in the family so I had let him give this pillow a try. Although it didn't totally eliminate his snoring, he found the pillow very comfortable. It is made of a heavy foam that does not lose shape and promotes  natural head and neck alignment . It also replaces the use of him using two pillows.
He gave the pillow a thumbs up.

Select Comfort would like to offer a pillow to one of our readers in the USA or Canada. The winner will have their choice of trying a pillow suitable to reducing snoring or one for tossing and turning.

Random.org will make a random selection from all entries recieved on February 18,2010

7 Frugal Valentine’s Day Gift Ideas

With Valentine day is just a week away you must have started thinking about the unique ways to make this day very special. And, to help you in enjoying this special day with your loved ones and in making it more romantic in an inexpensive way, we’ve brought together a list of seven frugal and creative valentine’s gifts ideas for you.

Write a poem – No expensive gift can express your feelings in a way a poem can do. Sit down and write a poem on this day for your loved ones telling them what you feel about them and why they are so special for you. Don’t be nervous if you haven’t written a poem earlier. You don’t need to write like experts. Anything simple and rhyming will be perfect.

Create a short video – Okay. So you can’t write a poem. Not a problem at all. You can create a short video telling your loved ones about what was your thinking when you met for the first time, how much nervous you was on the first date, what you like the most in him/her and about all the special moments you spent together or planning to spend in future. Okay and don’t forget to sing a song in video. ;)

Cook together- There is no such rule that you have to go out for the dinner on Valentine’s Day and spend money on it. Instead of that cook those heart shaped cakes, heart shaped cookies together. Cooking at home won’t only help you to save some money but will also give you more quality time to spend together.

Go for camping – Take a break from the city traffic, pollution and noise. Leave your mobile phones and laptops at home and go to some quite place for camping. Forget all your daily life tensions and enjoy the beauty of nature with your loved ones.

Two person clothing – If you are trying to make your evening more romantic and spicy then two person t-shirts, hand huggers or underwear could be a great option for you. Feel each other more closely in tight proximity and limited movement. These products are not expensive and are available to buy online.

Massage your Partner – Get some scented oils and lotions from the market and then give a great massage to each other. If you don’t want to give massage of your own then you can also hire a massage therapist. Almost all therapists provide couple massage services which provide massage to both persons at the same time in the same room.

Watching favorite movies – Rent your all time favorite movies and enjoy watching them with your partner. Also, don’t forget to accompany your experience with wines, popcorns and candies.

How to Save Money Buying DVD Movies

Thursday, February 4, 2010

Many people love to buy DVD movies for many reasons, depends on their preferences. It can be really fun to grow your collection and to have a large base of movies to watch over and over again whenever you feel like it. However, if you are a DVD collector then this may be an expensive hobby. DVDs themselves could cost anywhere from around 10 to 30 dollars, which adds up when you buy tens of DVDs in any given year. Here is a quick guide on how to save money when shopping for your DVD movies.

1)Don't Buy Brand New

This almost goes without saying - brand new movies are going to be much more expensive that second-hand DVD movies and you don't have to pay for them. There is absolutely no reason why you shouldn't be able to find some great second hand discs that could end up costing you about half the money of the new movie. This is a great way to save, or it could even enable you to afford twice as many DVD movies to add to your collection! You can usually find some great deals at garage sales or even charity stores.

2)Buy Ex-Rentals

These are second-hand DVD movies that you buy directly from the rental stores. They are greatly reduced in price due to the fact that they may have been rented out many times. This means you should be careful when buying - make sure they aren't too scratched etc. However, you should be able to find some great bargains if you look carefully.

3)Shop Around

This applies both for new as well as second-hand DVD movies. Different shops will always sell the same movie at a different price, so you can really save some money if you are willing to spend some time looking around for the best deal. This may also mean finding shops that offer deals such as 3 for 2, or shopping around in sale times.

4)Buy New Releases Straight Away

If you really do want to buy brand new then it is best to buy new releases as soon as they come out. Whilst DVD movies will eventually go down in price, this could take a few years. If you can't wait then the price will always be best as soon as they have been released. This is due to the fact that there are usually special offers on the movie trying to make it sell well in its first few weeks.

5)Buy Independent Movies At A Later Date

The above rule only applies to blockbuster movies. If you are into independent movies then these are usually more expensive than the blockbusters when they first come out. If you have the patience then it is always best to wait as long as possible before buying the DVD movie so you can benefit from the biggest savings.

DVD movies really needn't be as expensive as you think. Follow these tips and you can ensure your collection grows with money to spare!

Gone But Never Forgotten

My dog Chloe died late last night. I've decided to stay home today from a day of training workshops I was attending.I am just too upset. She had been part of my life for 4 years and Gerry's for 10. We're unsure what happened to her, but she was sick and peeing blood for 3 weeks with no help from antibiotics.
With us by her side last night, I petted her and told her I loved her and prayed for the angels to take her and end her pain.Within half an hour, she was gone.
This post is for Chloe...always in my heart...
