Review: Dyson's DC45 Animal Cordless Vacuum

Friday, November 30, 2012

Studies show that having a pet can add years to your life, and sometimes I wonder whether we do need those extra years to clean up all the pet hair our four legged family member leave around. Pet owners know that pet hair doesn’t just stay on the floor, and it has the tendency to attach itself everywhere, couch cushions, in vents, plastered to walls. However, I think I found a solution in the new Dyson DC45 Animal cordless vacuum, which is amazing. Typically these vacuums are considered crème de la crème of vacuums and with good reason.

The suction is excellent, and because it is cordless you are never searching for a plug or tripping over wires. Best yet, it has a long reaching adjustable wand that allows you literally to clean from floor to cleaning without awkward balancing. Removing the dust from the Dyson in very easy and since the filter is washable you will never be searching for parts. When you are done using it you simply hang it back up in a docking station on the wall, so it’s never in your way. In truth, I love this vacuum because (can’t help the pun) it sucks.

All about Dyson DC45 :

Dyson digital motor
Dyson digital motors are engineered to be small and powerful. Using digital pulse technology, they spin at up to 104,000 rpm – making the Digital Slim the most powerful cordless vacuum.

New battery technology
A 22.2V nickel manganese cobalt battery pack releases its charge evenly so there is no drop in performance.

Root Cyclone™ technology
Dyson’s patented Root Cyclone™ technology – condensed to fit into the machine – spins dust and dirt out of the air using centrifugal force, so there’s no loss of suction.

Motorized head
The motorized floor tool has an independent 30 W motor driving stiff nylon bristles into carpet pile to remove stubborn dirt. A carbon fibre brush bar has anti-static carbon filaments to remove fine dust from hard floors.

The Dyson Digital Slim™ is available on dysoncanada.ca – and at Canadian Retailers: Future Shop, Best Buy, The Bay, Home Outfitters, Sears, The Brick, Bed Bath and Beyond, and Independent Dyson Retailers. Suggested retail - $449.99

Free Online Games At YTV

It’s a well-known fact that kids love games. There are the school yard favorites such as a game of tag, hide and go seek and capture the flag. These are a fantastic source of activity and part of a healthy lifestyle.

Many kids also love indoor games which can be great at incorporating the whole family for a fun board game night. In the past few years there has also been a rise in the very popular video games for children. These however can sometimes require a higher level of skill and with the cost of the console as well as the various games can be quite expensive.A great game alternative that is both free and fun is YTV games.

YTV is known as a television program provider for the youth market; however the online component offers a huge variety of free online games at YTV that can keep the kids entertained for hours. After all with the approaching winter the weather is not always nice to have kids go outside and play without being bundled up, it gets dark much faster these days and sometimes there may not be other kids around for your children to play with. For all of these scenarios YTV games is an excellent and free alternative to having your kids follow you around saying that they are bored.

The website offers flash games which are browser based great as they can be accessed from many locations, so you don’t have to drag a gaming console over to the grandparents’ house when you visit. With over one hundred different flash games and video games available you and your child can find something that suits their interest and skill level. These can be accessed at any time, which also makes them very convenient. Most of the games are based on the popular television show characters that kids know and love. These include Pokémon, iCarly, a vast Sponge Bob square pants game collection, Fairly Odd Parents and Penguins of Madagascar among many, many more. The players also have a chance to rate the games so that you can choose some that have become very popular or provide feedback on the others that have not peaked your interest. These types of games are good for kids that may have short attention spans, unlike traditional console video games which can have elaborate and long story lines, these games are designed to be a fun and fast distraction. Kids can be easily amused as they switch from one game to another, and there are no difficult maneuver systems that you have to learn.

Truthfully the games also provide a fun distraction for adults and are perfect for a little quick mini break. The level of game play and the graphic are great and I did even find myself drawn into a riveting game of duck racing.

So if you are looking for a fun distraction (that does not cost any money) for your kids during the upcoming cold winter months consider YTV games.

Kellogg’s New Breakfast Line Up

We all know that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and there is no reason why it cannot be nutritious as well as delicious.

Kellogg’s has a great new breakfast product line up. This includes Kellogg’s Special K morning shakes which come in flavors such as chocolate, strawberry and vanilla. They are a fantastic breakfast when you are on the go…which for some can be every day.

For those who prefer a more substantial breakfast, Kellogg’s now offers breakfast sandwiches made on delicious flat bread. These are low in calories and big on flavor, best yet they are ready in 90 sec. The flat breads come in great flavors including egg and sausage, egg with vegetables and pepper jack cheese, as well as egg, ham and pepper jack cheese. Now you don’t have to stand in long line ups to get your favorite breakfast sandwich.

Additionally there are now mini Eggo waffles. They are the same great crispy taste that you would in traditional Eggo waffles but are now smaller which makes them perfect for little children sized hands, or just someone watching their portions.

With the new Kellogg’s breakfast line up you can have a great breakfast, even when you are short on time.

Online Bingo

Wednesday, November 28, 2012

The changing technology has affected the way that we do things in many ways. It has changed the way that we work and the way that we play. Today, instead of going to a traditional Bingo parlor, people can play Bingo online through services such as Ladbrokers bingo online

The rules of the game are pretty simple. Once you register you are given a bingo sheet with rows and columns of numbers. The goal of the game is to match the numbers that are on your sheet to the ones which will the called out by the computer (using a random number generator). If the numbers on your sheet match the sought after pattern and are verified by the computer, you win.

The online aspect of this game allows for the prize money to be quite large, sums that would never be available in a traditional bingo parlor. With vast prize money on the line there are several ways that you can improve your odds. First is to get more than one bingo card per game, just don’t get so many that they become unmanageable. The more Bingo cards you have the greater are your odds of winning.

Second way to better your odds is to play during a time when less people are online, this will lessen your competition. Luckily with online bingo play, you compete against people with different time zones, so there is always a game on the way, no matter the time. Remember also that Bingo is a game of chance, so if you are not having a good day, it might be best just to quit while you are ahead and to hope that lady luck will smile at you at a later day.

We used to have radio bingo here in my small town but no longer have it. I used to play from time to time, and remember the days when my mom and I used to play at the bingo hall.
Online bingo can be just as thrilling and fun!

Travelling Can Be A Fantastic Experience With A Good Set of Luggage-Really!

Monday, November 26, 2012

Travelling can be a fantastic experience filled with many wonderful memories. However, there is nothing like having your luggage broken on the first day of the trip, to put a damper on your spirits or broken luggage when you return home. After all, there are some things that even duck tape cannot fix.

Gerry and I, travel quite often, about 3 -4 times a year, and every time, our cheaper economy luggage, has been coming home broken. A person really shouldn't have to buy luggage every time they return from a holiday!

This time instead of buying yet another cheap quality luggage set we are going to be reviewing the  Samsonite Maneuver Spinner Duffles. Although we aren't travelling now, we wanted to tell you about this luggage, in time for Christmas.

They are constructed of a rugged ploy/nylon blend with 360 degree spinning wheels which as any traveler knows are a lifesaver as you maneuver through tight corners. The whole luggage rolls up right and doesn't add any added strain to your probably already overloaded arms. High wear areas are reinforced so that you will not get premature wear and tear. There is plenty of storage space, zippered compartments and compression straps that should make the packing experience a breeze.

We look forward to our next trip out with our Samsonite luggage.

5 Tasty Homemade Gift Ideas

With Christmas less than a month away now, people are scrambling to find gifts for their loved ones, without spending an arm and a leg to get them.

Does this sound like you?

A simple way to save money, but to also give gifts that people will enjoy, is to make edible (or drinkable!) gifts.

Here are 5 tasty homemade gift ideas that everyone is sure to love:

#1. Cookies or Cookie Mix

Everyone loves cookies, especially around the holidays, so why not bake some yummy treats to give away?

Package them up in a cute Christmas tin or box and tie it up with a bow.

Alternatively, instead of actually baking the cookies, you can add all of the dry ingredients to a jar, slap on a label and tie that up with a bow. This way, people can choose to eat the cookies when they want to!

#2. Hot Chocolate Mix

Homemade hot chocolate is ridiculously easy to make. With only a few ingredients, plus a mason jar (or whatever jar you have on hand), it's inexpensive, too!

It might be nice to also include a few mugs with your hot chocolate mix, as well - other ideas are a small throw blanket, some candles, or these homemade hot chocolate dippers

#3. Sauces

For a Christmas gift idea that isn't filled with sugar, you might try making, and packaging, your own homemade sauces.

Pasta sauce, barbecue sauce, even hot sauce make great gifts. Most people love to receive any type of homemade food as a gift, especially if it's something that they regularly use a lot of.

#4. Spice Rub

It's common for most people to buy pre-mixed, pre-packaged spice mixes at the grocery store because they are convenient. But they can easily be re-created at home with not much effort.

For those of your family and friends that simply don't want to put forth any amount of effort at all, a spice rub mix might be a great idea for a gift.

Put together a custom blend of spices that can be used to rub on beef, chicken, fish or pork, and put them in a small tin or jar.

#5. S'mores Kit

One of the best homemade food gifts I've ever received was a s'mores kit. You can make these kits small or large, it's up to you.

Package together (with cellophane, or in a gift box) some graham crackers, large marshmallows and a chocolate bar and you're done. A creative gift idea that anyone would enjoy.

Everyone likes s'mores, right?

As you can see, there are a ton of different ideas out there for homemade food (and drink) gifts.

You don't need to spend a fortune on gift giving. Send some love to everyone you know by spending just a bit of time in your kitchen, whipping up something tasty.

And if you really get stuck on food ideas for gifts, check out Pinterest. There are more gift ideas there than you could ever imagine!

Finding Cheap Shipping Containers For Sale

Shipping containers seem to be ubiquitous, even more so when you're in need of one. During the course of a normal day you may pass by them in the street, drive by a shipping container riding on a chassis as it cruises down the highway, or even notice that construction site that you've passed five days a week for the last six months is loaded with converted shipping containers - on converted shipping container office, and several modified shipping containers being used as portable storage containers. The burning question that people typically ask is, "where can I buy a shipping container at a cheap price?"

As with anything, when you begin shopping for used shipping containers the first thing to do is find a few prices and compare them. Your definition of "cheap" may be greatly different than someone else's. Many container traders and retail locations have websites, but they don't always provide online pricing (keep in mind; these are typically container depots and terminals, and typically not people that spend their entire day behind a desk). If you don't have any luck finding a local business that sells used shipping containers, the next stop is to visit an ecommerce website that sell shipping containers. The first obvious choice is eBay. There are a usually a few shipping containers listed on eBay, but the inventory tends to be limited and centered in only a few specific areas. The next choice is ContainerAuction.com. ContainerAuction.com specializes in used shipping containers, and many companies (some of which may be local to you), have accounts on ContainerAuction.com and either list their used containers on the site, or you can contact them directly through the site to inquire about their inventory.

To help you get the best price on new or used shipping containers, you'll want to have a few bits of information ready to share with the company selling the container.

  • How long do you want the shipping container to be?
  • What do you plan on using the shipping container for (storage, housing conversion, shipping)?
  • Do you know what condition you need the container to be in (typical conditions are "cargo worthy", "wind/water tight", "one trip", and "as-is, where is".
  • Will you need the container to be delivered?
  • If you need the container delivered, do you have a forklift on site, or will the truck need to drop the container to the ground?

Obviously, location and condition are the two biggest factors in shipping container prices. An "as is where is container", which is the lowest grade condition, will be much less than one that's "cargo worthy". In most circumstances, you'll want to find a container that's at least in wind/water tight condition. You can expect a 20' used shipping container in wind/water tight condition to be at least $1500 anywhere in the United States or Canada. If you find one that's less, be sure to inspect it closely - there may be problems with it.

If you have those questions answered and do a little homework, there's no doubt that you'll be able to find a used shipping container for sale.

Investment 101 – A Basic Guide For Novice Investors

Thursday, November 22, 2012

Investing Defined

Investing means putting money to work to obtain additional income or profit. It is basically making money without having to work for it. With this, people can work for their employers, sleep, eat and do their daily activities while earning money at the same time.

There are many investment options available today. People may go for traditional methods such as putting their money in bonds, stocks, mutual funds and real estate.  Each of these investment vehicles has their own pros and cons. Whatever future investors choose, the main goal is to gain profit.

Before making a final decision, investors must understand clearly what their options are, how they work and the risks that come with them.

Importance of Investing

People invest in order to grow their money. With this, they are able to enhance their quality of life because they can afford the things they want and need, especially in later life after retirement. A good investment also increases their sense of security knowing that they have some money in store if they need it.

Types of Investments

Future investors should understand that their choice of investment vehicles is crucial.  They have to know what works best for them. The following are among the most popular investment options available today.

Bonds

Bonds are categorized as fixed-income securities. Bond investors lend their money to the government or a company with the agreement that it will eventually be paid back along with interest.

The reason why many investors opt for bonds is that they are relatively safe. This is especially true when purchasing bonds from a stable government. The only risk that comes with bonds is the small potential return. Bonds typically have lower returns than other types of securities.

The following are the different types of bonds.

• Government Bonds
• Municipal Bonds
• Corporate Bonds
• Zero-Coupon Bonds

In order to determine the bond’s value, investors have to be aware of its basic features.

• Face Value

Par value or the face value is the amount of money that a bond holder claims when the investment matures. A bond being sold at a premium means it is traded at the price higher than its face value. Meanwhile, the bond being sold at a discount means it sells below its sale value.  It is important to understand that face value is not the bond’s price.

• Interest Rate or Coupon

The interest payment for bonds is referred to as interest rates or coupons. In the past, it was called coupons mainly because bond holders had to tear a physical coupon in order to redeem the interest. Today, they are stored electronically.

Most bondholders receive interest payments every six months whilst others get them every month, quarterly or yearly. A bond that pays 10 percent with a £1,000 par value means a holder receives £100 coupon or interest annually. The interest rate can either be a fixed-rate or a floating-rate bond.

• Maturity

The maturity date is the future date when the bond holder’s principal amount invested will be repaid.  Some bonds may mature in a day whilst some can take up to 30 years.

Generally, bonds that mature after many years are riskier but come with higher interest rates than those with a one-year maturity

• Issuer

When purchasing a bond, potential investors have to give more attention to the issuer as it is the most important factor when making a decision. The bond issuer’s stability determines their capability to pay the money back. Government bonds are more stable and secure than those from private corporations. This is because governments have the resources to pay back the investors through taxation.

Stocks

Investing in stocks is a lot riskier than bonds. However, it can provide potentially high returns. Purchasing stocks means becoming a part owner of a business. The stock holder can participate in the shareholder’s decision making and meetings.

Stock holders are eligible to receive profits that the business gives to all its owners. These are also called dividends. However, stocks are volatile unlike bonds that are generally more stable.

Purchasing stocks does not give investors any guarantee. This is mainly because the stock’s value may change unpredictably on a daily basis. There are some stocks that do not pay dividends and only pay out when the stock’s value increases.

The following are the different types of stock.

• Common Stock
• Preferred Stock

How to Buy Stocks

• Brokerage

Using a brokerage is the most common method that investors prefer when buying stocks. They have the option to go for discount brokerages where they can take advantage of cheaper prices. Another choice is a full-service brokerage where investors can get professional advice. They may also allow these experts to manage their accounts for a price.

• Dividend Reinvestment Plans and Direct Investment Plans

DRIPs and DIPs allow company shareholders to buy stocks directly from the company at minimal prices. This is the best route for people who want to invest small amounts at regular intervals.

Mutual Funds

A collection of bonds and stocks is called a mutual fund. This type of investment has become more popular in recent years. Today, there are millions of people in the U.K. who invest in mutual funds, and the number keeps growing.

There are three ways that an investor can earn money from a mutual fund.

• Investors earn from stock dividends and bond interest.
• Investors earn from capital gains that result from selling securities at a higher price.
• Investors earn when the fund holding’s price increases but the fund manager does not sell it. When this happens, there will be an increase in fund shares.

Mutual Funds Pros and Cons

Pros

• With mutual funds, the investor’s risk is more spread out. Mutual funds allow the investors to minimize the loss from the other assets through the gains earned.

• Professionals manage mutual funds. With this, there is no need for investors to hire a full-time manager and pay them for their work. Mutual funds are the best option for small investors because they can ensure their funds are well-managed.

• Mutual fund investors can request that their shares be converted to cash whenever they need them. This liquidity feature is similar to individual stocks.

• Mutual funds require minimal investment. Buying is relatively easy as most banks have their own line of mutual funds.

Cons

• Mutual funds can be expensive. This is especially true when expenses incurred for the manager’s wages and other fees that are passed on to investors are taken into account. These fees do not grow over time. With this, potential mutual fund investors have to think about the long-term consequences related to this matter.

• Investors may end up paying high taxes for holding non-tax sensitive funds in a tax-deferred account or investing in tax-sensitive funds.

Alternative Investments

People who are skeptical about these types of investments may also go for other alternatives. This includes forex, real estate, futures, options and gold. Basically, investment alternatives are assets that are not classified as traditional investment vehicles.

Other alternative investments that are not as common include art, antiques, coins, books, toys, guns and other collectible items. However, these investments require investors to have a good eye for detail. These assets basically start as hobbies and turn into investments later.

The major disadvantage of opting for these alternatives is that the returns may take a long time. Nevertheless, they may provide great profits in the future. This is especially true for those who know enough to predict what items will likely increase in value in the long run.

How To Generate Extra Income

It's sad but true that get rich quick schemes quite simply don't exist: if it looks too good to be true then in is. But that doesn't mean there aren't genuine ways of boosting your income. Here are five of our favorites.

1.Get cash for your old coins
I wonder how many households throughout the UK have got little stashes of foreign coins hidden here and there, left over from holidays and other trips abroad? Banknotes are easy to exchange, but most places won't take coins. Most, but not all. Websites like Cash4coins.co.uk are a quick and easy way to change foreign coins that's useless to you for money you can save or spend.

2. Surveys
Did you know that there are dozens of companies out there who are willing to pay you for your opinion? Filling in surveys, usually about new products, can be a great way to earn cash or vouchers, and can be enjoyable too, particularly if you're the sort of person who likes to have their say and influence companies to start selling the kind of stuff they like.

3. Arts and crafts
Do you like making stuff? If so, then why not sell your goods online? Sites like Etsy and Folksy are more than just marketplaces, they're communities of like minded people who love the personal touch of handmade creations.

4. Selling books, music, DVDs and games
If you want to sell your books or electronic products for money, you basically have two options. One is more definite, but the other more lucrative - if, that is, you manage to sell. Sites like musicmagpie.com will buy your CDs and DVDs in bulk. There's no hassle: simply enter what you want to sell onto their website, they will make you an offer, and if you like it you can send your stuff off and get paid. Alternatively, you can sell through Ebay or Amazon Marketplace. You won't be guaranteed to find a buyer, and even if you do it might take a while, but you're likely to get a significantly better return.

5. Car boot sales
Leaving the oldie but the goodie until last, car boot sales can still be a great way of earning a bit of extra money. Book your space, pack up the car and make sure you arrive good and early. Even if you're there as a seller, don't forget to look for bargains to buy.

Jake-Trying To Stay Warm

Tuesday, November 20, 2012

Had to share this photo with you all today.
While I was ironing today, Jake found a spot by the register to warm up.
He'll sit beside them when they are blowing but moves when they stop, sometimes looking down to see why it's stopped.

Making A Small Change

Sunday, November 18, 2012

This cupboard we have in our kitchen was actually once part of a china cabinet, but we took it apart, and then Gerry re-did the top. I love it only because I can keep my purse, flyers, and It Works stuff on it, but really, I HAD to get rid of it. The cupboard, like the rest of our kitchen cupboards are very dated.

So, what we did:
We moved our pantry from another corner and bought a kitchen cart for the little bit of things I did have left in this cupboard. The pantry we bought last year, from Canadian Tire for under $100 and the kitchen cart was almost half price at $119,this weekend. We also got a scratch card and got 10% back in Canadian Tire money.
I'm happy with the look- and would love to know what YOU think.

Spend Less, Give More

Stress Less, Save Money

Sound familiar?

Is this your plan every Christmas season?

Your intentions are great, but how can you really spend less this Christmas? There is more to frugal shopping than just looking for the sales!

Frugal Shopping – 7 Simple Ways to Save Money

.     Plan Ahead – Now’s the time to make a list and set a budget. Don’t forget gifts for teachers, neighbors and toy drives…those little last minute gifts can really add up! If you need help getting started, try ListPlanIt.com for printable lists.

.     Draw Names – If your family is not already drawing names, this is a great year to start. Drawing names is a wonderful way to spend less because instead of buying for all 10 nieces and nephews, you’ll just buy for one! Other money saving options…instead of individual gifts, give a family gift that everyone will enjoy or give gifts only to children.

.     Do Your Homework – Use the internet to do a little “window shopping” and compare prices before you hit the stores. Don’t forget to check TheBlackFriday.com to preview Black Friday ads.

.     Order Discounted Gift Cards – Order discounted gift cards now to use for shopping. If Susie wants jewelry from Claire’s, you can buy a discounted gift card on Plastic Jungle for 12% off, and nobody will know you didn’t pay full price. Plastic Jungle is your source for discounted gift cards and check often because the inventory changes daily. $100 gift cards for as low as $70 to purchase brand name products at your favorite stores! .     Give a Groupon – Think beyond the Groupon certificate and think Groupon Goods. Each week they feature great deals on great gifts, and once again nobody will know you paid way less than the list price.

.     Earn Cash Back – Begin every online shopping trip at Ebates.com and earn cash back on every purchase plus discover money saving coupon codes. Won’t it be nice to get a big fat check after Christmas? It really does pay to shop online!

.     Be Creative – You don’t have to be Martha Stewart to make your own gifts, just look to Pinterest.com for inspiration.

.     Re-Gift – Is it OK to re-gift? That’s a matter of opinion, but it’s certainly OK to recycle nice bows, boxes and gift bags! If you start collecting boxes and gift bags now, you’ll likely have plenty by December. If not, try The Dollar Store.

Now you know the 7 simple ways to save money on Christmas shopping and all your shopping!
