January's Expenses Out Here in the Desert

Well, January has almost come to an end, and for all of January I kept track of our expenses. We wanted to see where money was going and perhaps what we could do the following month to lower any expenses. It does make it challenging I must add with the Canadian dollar being as low as it is. In the end, everything is costing us more. However, we are enjoying no snow- but at a cost!

Expenses for January:

Gas for RV- even though we're parked, we do need to fill the RV for gas to run the generator .
$120 USD

Propane for RV- which is for hot water tank, furnace and fridge
Going to turn down furnace lower for evenings and shut hot water tank off at night and put it back on in the morning. See if those things help with lowering bill for February

Laundry- Do hang alot of it out- washing smaller things in a pail of water in the bathroom
But we do make a few trips to laundromat - about once a week for bigger items like sheets, blankets, etc

Groceries- this one really hurt! I used some coupons when I could but found not having a Walmart nearby made a big difference. We have shopped them and things are alot cheaper. We shopped Dollar Stores but the meat, frozens, fruits and veggies at grocery stores costed us. Back home I use more coupons, get more clearance deals, and match flyers with coupons and watch for deals. For February we'll be doing a once a week Walmart shop- even if it means driving a bit further than the other stores.. we feel it will still be worth it.
We'll also be challenging ourselves to spend less each week during February.

Replacing A Bowl Seal On Dometic RV Toliet

Recently we started having an issue with one of our Dometic toilets in our RV where it would not hold the water in the bowl. Of course we are not the original owners of this 2005 RV, and unsure the age of the toilet, so it may have been the original.

Upon determining that it was a Model 210, we contacted Dometic to see if they could help with resolving the issue. We were helped out quite quickly, and were shipped a new bowl seal for review on our site.

Having received it, Gerry installed it today as in little as 10 minutes following the easy to understand directions on the package. Now we have a toilet that is holding water and fully functional again. We might add that the replacement seal came with a secondary seal, one which our original unit did not have, so we can be assured that we will now have a longer lasting toilet. What we found by inquiring is that sometimes you just might need to contact the supplier of your product to ask for a resolution. Dometic had been most accommodating to our emails and this issue.

Time To Reflect and Re-look at Expenses and Our Canadian Dollar

Our Canadian dollar has definitely gotten weaker since we arrived here the second week of November. Right now we're seeing any purchases using the MasterCard at 1.50 as opposed to using it on a Canadian purchase and being only $1.00. It was about 1.32 when we first arrived so it has gotten worst. 

How does this effect us now while we're here? Well, we don't do alot of shopping for fun. We buy what we need. Unless we know what we buy here will be equal to or less back home. If it's more than the exchange, we don't buy it. 

Where it's tough is with us buying groceries. Walmart definitely has the best deals for groceries, BUT we're not near a Walmart. Closest one is 40 minutes away. That means a drive there, Jakey to the doggy babysitter for about $5-$8 and another 40 minute drive back to camp here. Not always convenient. Since we have a small freezer and fridge, we are limited to about a weeks worth of storing food. Food prices at other grocery stores in the area are about the same as back home or a bit more.. but add to that the lower Canadian dollar and it's not good. We're probably paying double for groceries here now because of that, than what we were back home. Double!

What can we do? Well, for starters, we may go with a weekly budget and use cash. When you have cash, and not using a debit card, it's easier to see where your money is going and how much you are sticking within a budget. We do already shop at the Dollar Stores and buy whatever we can for less, but you cant get fresh veggies, produce and meat there.

We also said that the next time we come back to the US we will have to be fully stocked in the cupboards with food from back home. This way we can be more in control of sales back home over the summer months there. With  me using coupons more, and sales, we can stock up and save at least on the dry goods, and cleaners. Who knows what the dollar will be like next Fall.

First Time Ever and an Update!

Okay- I just noticed my hubby shaved his mustache after always having one. Took me 4 hours to notice! But it's like grow  it back!!

We Loved The Palm Springs Aerial Tramway

The last time we were in Palm Springs we missed the opportunity to see the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway. We went during holiday season- even though we were advised against it, and were turned back, since there was a 4 hour wait. I was disappointed and really had wanted to see it so we decided we'd come back again. We had a 2 hour drive from Quartzsite to get there. Dropping Jakey off at the doggy daycare in Cathedral City while we took the trip up the mountain. ( Cathedral City is only about 12 minutes away from the Tramway).

The Palm Springs Aerial Tramway in Palm Springs, California, is the largest rotating aerial tramway in the world. It was opened in September 1963 as a way of getting from the floor of the Coachella Valley to relatively near the top of San Jacinto Peak and was constructed in rugged Chino Canyon. There is so much history about this Tram...which you can read here on Wikipedia.

It's a long way up, and I'm afraid of heights to some extent but it was a great thing to still do for that "bucket list"...I just had Gerry take photos while riding up. On the way down we were in the center of the tram, and people all around us by the windows so we didn't have a great view. So going up or down, make sure you get a window spot at least once! It's a must see spot when in the area.

RVing down in Arizona for the winter- our first winter away from home, we were quick to realize once we got in the area we needed to dump our black/grey tank more often than we may have thought.
