Arrived Day 2- Victoria

Sunday, June 19, 2016

Our day started today with checking out of the hotel and heading half hour down the road to catch the B.C Ferry to Victoria, (  1 1/2 hour away). Found it expensive for sure- $88 for the car and the two of to go across. And of course we'll have to come back again, so will be another $88!

Once we arrived we decided to start checking out some of the places I had talked about earlier in the blog posts. We paid a visit first to the Victoria Bug Zoo.

Totally cool place you have to see if your in the city. There were so many cool bugs that we had never seen before and even your ordinary bugs like cockroaches and ants.

Our daughter Ria would have loved the ants, below, as she's talked about starting her own ant colony.

They have also added some new bugs - Giant Stag Beetles, Jungle Nymph stick insects and  Flower Mantis. If you get the chance too when your there be sure to get in on a tour with the tour guide. Today there were little kids there with their parents, and  they seem to have so many questions. The guide as well has interesting answers that really help you improve your knowledge about bugs- more so than touring around the rooms on your own.

Also saw a cool castle, called Craigdarroch Castle. Check out their web site. They're photos on there are amazing. And here are some of my own below.
Huge house that over the years has served as a home, a military hospital,a college and music conservatory. Well worth a visit.

Our last stop of the day was a trip around Victoria Harbour on the harbour taxi, Victoria Harbour Ferry.Loved seeing so much of the harbour that we wouldn't have seen by car. This made it so easy- and all within a 45 minute ride. I might add of course that this isn't just a tour around the harbour but as well is narrated which makes it even more interesting. Don't forget to do this when in Victoria. They are easy to find- across from the beautiful Empress Hotel at the Empress Dock.

We had a great day today. It was Fathers Day- took Gerry out for supper at Swiss Chalet, seen some great sites, weather was nice too. Only complaint was it was busy with traffic everywhere, and parking was a bit hard to locate. Not much for free parking either. Parkades and paid parking lots. We were in a touristy area though and even locals said parking is not an easy thing to come by.

Saw some bigger homes as well high on the hill tops across from our hotel window:

We look forward to tomorrow and hope you enjoyed the pictures. Please DO visit the web sites of the places we had a chance to visit today, where you can learn more about them.

On a final note- Happy Fathers Day all dads who follow us on this special day!

Arrived Vancouver!

Arrived Vancouver last night- was a very short plane ride over from Saskatoon.. I wish they were all that short- we'd fly more if they were! Only about 2 hours in the air. Guess Air Canada didn't feel we needed anything to eat though- weren't even offered snacks on the plane- unless you were going to pay for them. Earlier we had made a stop at the grocery store and at least we had some  corn chips that held us over till we landed, then stopped for a very late meal at A&W. There was a bit of turbulence on the plane but nothing too terrible and always make sure to take my anti nausea medication when we DO fly.

This morning we're leaving Vancouver and driving to catch the ferry to Victoria. Heard it may be about an hour drive from our hotel.

Today is your typical coastal day- cloudy and drizzly. One never knows how to pack when travelling for sure. We'll talk later in the day.....

Review: Pro-Mix Heal and Feed and the Pro-Mix Seed

Wednesday, June 15, 2016

Pro-Mix is a Canadian company that makes a variety of products for your lawn, garden, flowers, vegetables and herbs. They are experts in the field of horticulture and agriculture. They have made breakthroughs and innovations in their field, along with research and development programs. One of their breakthroughs include the creation of the very first prefabricated growing medium made of sphagnum peat moss and fertilizers. These active ingredients will enhance the growth and resistance of plants.

Two of the products they sell are the Pro-Mix Heal and Feed and the Pro-Mix seed. The Pro-Mix Heal and Feed, is a lawn fertilizer. We used this on our grass when it was time to fertilize. It is used to give a healthier soil, less watering and better stress resistance. It also gives your lawn stronger roots and less maintenance. It will continually feed and heal your lawn for up to six weeks. We know we fed our lawn a great product to create healthier grass.

The Pro-Mix seed adapts to various environment and soil conditions for guaranteed results. We seeded a few areas and about 3 weeks later we had noticed quite a difference as you can see by our pictures. We added grass seed to lawn that was patchy and yellowed.

Fertilizer was also spread in the hedges we were growing. Even they gave up more and are growing so strong and healthy!

We will be following up in a few more weeks as we will be putting down black dirt and growing a few area of grass in our previous "rock garden" that we have decided to cover in with grass. We were going to buy a few pieces of sod, but are going with a bit of black dirt instead in this area, and using the seed only.
Can't wait to see the end result! These products have resulted in amazing results for our lawn!

9 Ways To Get True Beauty Sleep

The quality and length of sleep you receive every night can have a profound impact on your skin’s overall health.  When we sleep our bodies recharge. Not only do our bodies recharge, our skin does as well. Dr. Kaleroy Papantoniou is a board certified NYC dermatologist who explains that,“ During sleep we heal, restore and eliminate toxins from the skin. If sleep is compromised, so is the body’s ability to carry out these essential skin functions. During the first three hours of sleep your body will start producing the human growth hormone from the pituitary gland. As we age, this hormone is necessary for the maintenance of youthful and radiant skin.  Without this hormone release, skin is not repaired from daily damage and thus induces the aging process.”

The middle two hours of sleep is when melatonin is increased. Melatonin is a hormone that is responsible for regulating your circadian rhythm (sleep/wake patterns) but also acts as an antioxidant that helps protect the skin from damaging free radicals.

The final three hours, or during the active REM sleep stage, levels of cortisol (aka the stress hormone) decrease. Dr. Papantoniou explains that, “The skin’s temperature also drops to its lowest point allowing muscles to relax and become immobile, giving skin its deepest recovery of the night.”

Dr. Papantoniou Provides 9 Ways To Get True Beauty Sleep

1. Supplement Your Sleep

As we age, our bodies naturally produce less melatonin, which affect our skin's ability to repair itself at night. If falling asleep is becoming more difficult, you may benefit from taking a melatonin supplement or using a topical product with melatonin to help combat decreased hormone levels. Melatonin works best if taken at night about 30 minutes before going to bed. This is when it serves its purpose, and helps to increase the depth and duration of restorative sleep. Restorative sleep, in turn helps accelerate and optimize the skin’s repair cycle, says Dr. Papantoniou.

2. Cleanse Twice

Have you ever washed your makeup off before bed, yet mysteriously woken up with liner smudged under your eyes? Turns out that's normal, especially if you used long-lasting makeup, which really does live up to its claim. Here's why: 12 to 24-hour foundations, mascaras, eyeliners, and eye shadows are all made with polymers that don't easily dissolve with soap and water, or water-based makeup remover.

Dr. Papantoniou says, “To really remove all traces of your makeup, take a cue from Korean skin care and wash your face twice using a method called "double cleansing." First, use an oil-based cleanser to remove your makeup (the oil breaks down the waxes and polymers way more effectively than soap and water). You can purchase an oil based make-up remover for this or even use coconut oil on a Q-tip to gently remove more stubborn makeup. Then, use a gentle non-soap cleanser to rid your skin of any leftover residue. An example of a gentle cleanser is Vanicream’s Gentle Cleanser or CeraVe Facial Cleanser”

3. Moisturize
While you sleep, your skin naturally repairs and restores itself, and cleaning it before bed maximizes this effect. Dr. Papanatoniou points out that, “During the day, your skin fights off all sorts of assaults, from UV rays to pollution; at night, there’s less damage control to do, so the beauty products that you apply may be more effective. Applying night creams to clean skin in the evening is the best time to soften your face; not to mention, it can feel soothing and relaxing as you prep for sleep.”

4. Put on a Sleep Mask

"Overnight masks are a great way to treat your skin and give it extra attention," says Dr. Papantoniou. The skin undergoes more cellular repair during sleep and can be more receptive to products at this time." She recommends using an overnight mask a few times a week in lieu of going through your usual nighttime regimen. Simply cleanse, slather on a layer of the mask, and go to sleep.

5. Keep Your Hair Off Your Face

Pull your hair back into a loose ponytail or wrap it in a scarf before going to bed. This will prevent the hair’s natural oils from rubbing off on your skin. This is especially important if your hair is unwashed or you are prone toward acne break outs.

6. Get The Right Pillowcases

It’s worth it to invest in some soft pillowcases, because friction from harsher cotton fibers can accelerate the development of permanent creases. Dr. Papantoniou suggests trying a smooth silk or satin pillowcase, which prevents trauma to the skin and reduces the probability of your skin forming lines and wrinkles while you sleep. Also remember to change and wash your pillowcases at least once a week.

7. Rejuvenate With a Retinoid

Choose an anti-age cream or serum that packs real power. These vitamin-a derivatives are key to youthful-looking skin. "But because exposure to sunlight can deactivate their potency, it's best to apply retinoids at night,” says Dr. Papantoniou. Start by using an OTC retinol-containing cream or serum every other night until skin becomes more tolerant to the side effects, which are often dryness and sensitivity.

8. Apply Eye Cream

If you are having problems with eye bags and puffiness after you wake up, applying eye cream before sleeping will solve this. Gently apply the cream around your eyes especially under it to replenish the skin surrounding your eyes. Make sure you stay hydrated during the day; this can help prevent water retention and will combat your sodium intake during the day.

9. Mind Your Sleeping Position

Train yourself not to sleep face down. This habit can cause premature wrinkles and creases. It’s better to position yourself properly while sleeping. This will also prevent your face from rubbing against pillowcases and sheets. If you are lucky and can sleep on you back, that is the best way to prevent wrinkles and creases from sleep habits.

Before and After Patio Set- Minus the Umbrella- For Now

Monday, June 13, 2016

Thought about getting a new patio set this year. We've had ours for a while and it had gotten worn from the sun and the metal was rusted in spots as well. Even the umbrella crank was broken and we could no longer use that.

The new wicker sets are so nice but also expensive, so decided since our chair pads were reversible, we'd just flip them, re-sew the tabs on the other side and spray paint the table and chair frames.Still have to get an umbrella- maybe when we go to the city, as I couldnt find anything that would match or in the price range I really wanted to spend. But 2 cans of spray paint later... and here we are!

Painting Touch Ups Bring New Life

Friday, June 10, 2016

Just a little paint here and there can sure give new life to things.
Here the outside door frame was looking worn so it got scraped down and repainted, along with our steel inner door to the porch that had begun yellowing over the years. Even that door looks like a new door again!

A Few Great Things To See and Do in Victoria, B.C

Thursday, June 9, 2016

Been busy planning our first trip to Victoria, B.C next month. We'll take a trip across to the island, on the ferry, from Vancouver, where we'll be flying into.
With trip planning comes the what can we see and do while we're there.
Some of the things I'd like us to see in Victoria is Chinatown, some great foodie spots, the B.C Legislative Building, as well as :

Victoria Bug Zoo-

An interesting place to visit while in Victoria, Is the Victoria Bug Zoo. It has been open since 1997 and has been showing visitors some awe inspiring bugs ever since. This is a must see mini-zoo if you are in the area, and offers an opportunity to view live tropical bugs from around the world. You can discover over 40 different species of bugs at the Victoria Bug Zoo. Some of the fascinating bugs you will see include walking sticks, praying mantis, glow in the dark scorpions, tarantulas and Canada’s largest ant colony. The experienced tour guides will help you enjoy your experience while there. They are very knowledgeable on all the animals and will introduce you to the world of bugs, some you can even hold yourself!

The Royal BC Museum

The Royal BC Museum is one of Canada’s greatest cultural treasures.  The museum was founded in 1887 and the Archives in 1894. The two joined in 2003 and now they collect artifacts, documents and specimens of British Columbia's natural human history. The Royal BC Museum has three permanent galleries. They are modern history, natural history and local First Nations history.  Their collections are about 7 million objects including artifacts, natural history specimens, and archival records. There is also special exhibits such as Mammoths- Giants of the Ice Age that is on now. We look forward to visiting- as it also features an IMAX theatre- 6 stories high and 81 feet wide!

The museum is beside the Victoria's Inner Harbour, between the Empress Hotel and Legislature Buildings. It is in the Royal BC Museum Cultural Precinct, a surrounding area with historical sites and monuments.

IMAX® Victoria-

Home of the largest IMAX® screen in British Columbia, IMAX Victoria in the Royal BC Museum is now also home to one of only thirty-five leading edge 4K Laser Projections Systems in the World. Whether you choose to see a traditional IMAX film or an evening Hollywood Feature film, or you experience your film in 2D or in 3D, you will leave the theatre knowing that you’ve just seen something special. You’ve seen the science of cinema raised to the level of magic!

A selection of films rotate on the schedule daily, visit imaxvictoria.com for current films, times, and coming soon titles.

Craigdarroch Castle

Craigdarroch Castle is located in Victoria, B.C. and hear it's an great experience. It was built during the industrial age, by a Scottish immigrant named Robert Dunsmuir. He made his fortune in Vancouver Island coal. The fortune of the family who built the castle is evident today in the beautiful stained glass windows, the intricate woodwork and the spectacular Victorian furnishings. Visiting the Craigdarroch Castle I'm sure will be  a memorable experience. There are 39 rooms and over 20,000 square feet of interior space we read on their site.

The Craigdarroch Castle is considered now a historical museum and is open daily with hours of 10-4:30. It is located a short distance from Victoria (inner) Harbour. It was also wonderful to cross off seeing a castle on our bucket list.

Butchart Gardens-

Over a century ago Jennie Butchart began working on what is now considered one of the world’s  principle floral show gardens. The Butchart gardens are open year round. They are located near Victoria and on beautiful Vancouver Island.

Mrs. Butchart used an abandoned quarry near the home and cement plant that the family owned, to build the first of her gardens. Her and her husband used the limestone that was available and she brought in topsoil from farmland nearby. Little by little the quarry blossomed, and it is what is now known as the Sunken garden.

Over the years the gardens have grown and stayed within the family. Today you can visit the Butchart Gardens and see other gardens such as a Japanese Garden, Rose Garden and more. Each year over a million plants are bedded with over 900 varieties to give you beautiful blooms from March through October.
We look forward to our walk through the gardens.

Victoria Harbour Ferry, has been serving Victoria, B.C. for over 35 years. You can take a harbour tour, a water taxi and more! There is no better way to see Victoria than by boat. You can escape the busy city and explore it from the water. There is a 45 min harbour tour and also a historic Gorge cruise. You could also take a water taxi, and hop all around Victoria, ferry stop by ferry stop. There is no set schedule for the water taxi. Just head to any ferry stop and they will pick you up, and take you to your destination. The Harbour tour, features historic landmarks. such as the Parliament buildings or First Nation sacred territories. We're very much looking forward to this. It will something we havent done before or seen in any of our travels.
