Life on the Road - Not Always Without a Hiccup or Two.. or Three?
Saturday, October 28, 2017
Well, a few good things for today- we made it to New Mexico, as our travels continue onward to Arizona. And it's our anniversary. Although we'll go out for supper I think once we get more settled.
Gerry always tries as much as he can to avoid hills and/ or higher elevations if we can with the RV as it's not a diesel, and those higher elevations can really suck the power out of the RV. Then there are the roads where if you are going up, your going to be coming down another side- and those roads are usually windy. Well, we went through alot of those today. Didn't see them on our map, but there they were. 6,000- 13,000 feet elevations today. Well, I guess it took it's toll on the RV and we started hearing "noises" when using the brakes. Gerry checked it out and said I think we're going to have to take it in. Oh no! I didn't want that. How do we manage without our RV- its our home, and take the dog somewhere with us too? I said" Can't you look at it and fix it?" Cause he can fix most anything. He said he'd look. Well, Mr Fix It did it again. He figured out the brake pads were wore due to all the mountains/ hills we've been on and it had to be fixed. Luckily, he was able to buy some today (chose the lifetime warranty ones) for $115 US/ $150 CDN and in the near dark now getting the new ones on, so we can get on the road tomorrow.
New one on left and the old on right
Now that problem is fixed but earlier before that today, the steel bracket that connects the slide to the hydrolic, that opens up the kitchen and living room area, snapped! Luckily it was in when it happened, but no slides out on those areas till he can find somewhere like an RV dealership that may carry on. He will be able to fix that himself as well, but we really didn't need for any of this to happen!
Great Sand Dunnes National Park, Colorado
Friday, October 27, 2017
Today I decided it would make the most sense to get a National Park Pass. For $80 it's good for a year for the two of us and to see as many National Parks as we want!
Today we drove to the Great Sand Dunnes National Park, near Mosca, Colorado.
The tallest dunes in North America are the centerpiece in a diverse landscape of wetlands, grasslands, forests, alpine lakes and tundra. It can take an hour to walk the top of the dunnes, and yes, people were doing it. But not us!

We've Arrived- Kansas and Boy Is Today Hot!
I think most of the this area has one HOT day and it's hot today- 28 degrees!
Made a road side stop off US 83 to see the Buffalo Bill Monument in Oakley, Kansas- worth the stop. This sculpture is amazing!
Me-as Annie Oakley
Then further up the road- but down very rough, dusty farm roads, the Monument Rocks- Chalk Pyramids. This was another one of these times I can say - if I would have known, I would have said no we don't have to see it. They were interesting but the dust is still lingering in the RV in the air...and in my lungs I'm sure from those roads, and the RV took a bit of a kicking, but we all survived! The ones across the way from where we were walking about reminded me of Stonehenge!

Day 2 North Platte, NE
Tuesday, October 24, 2017
Had our flu shots today! They would have been free in Canada but we missed them, but did get a discount here at Walmart and paid $22.97 each- so we're all set with that.
Today also went to see the Bailey Yard and Golden Spike Tower. This rail yard is the biggest classification yard in the world. Thought Gerry may like it since he used to work with rail cars at his job before he retired.
Owned and operated by Union Pacific Railroad, it sorts and services locomotives and rail cars headed across North America.
Covering 2850 acres- it's over 8 miles long and 2 miles wide. And an average of 14,000 rail cars pass through here everyday.
Admission: $7 per adult

What Is Wrong With This Picture?
So here we are parked at Walmart, and across from us we see this girl with a sign obviously looking for a handout. Now we will help those in need but this person has a Smartphone in their back pocket and drove here in their blue car seen in this photo on the left.
So tell me, what is wrong with this picture??
Both Quiznos and Walmart nearby- both have signs in windows they are hiring!

North Platte, Nebraska- 2 Day Stop
Campground- half full
We've decided to take a 2 day stop in North Platte, Nebraska. We arrived yesterday afternoon, and Gerry wanted to check into a campground so we could do laundry, get showers, etc.. plus free Wi-Fi at the campground! We had made a few pit stops along the way here and twice Jakey stepped in burrs- something we knew little of. But now we do! Windy along the way as well, made for harder driving conditions for Gerry, keeping the RV on the road. We missed out on an 1880's town that was created for the movie Dances with Wolves that starred Kevin Costner, but was closed for the season.
Place to walk Jakey
Will be checking out of this campground soon and heading to Walmart parking lot, with the truckers for the day/ night. Nice to have all the electrical, unlimited water, etc but came with a price of $37 US. Jakey gets excited though seeing the squirrels around here- and they are so big compared to the ones back home, and alot of people with their dogs. Seems like most that travel have pets.
Stopped today at the Fort Cody Trading Post here in North Platte.
Gerry outside The Trading Post
2 Headed Calf- Lived only 48 hours
Family owned and run since 1963, it features a few road side attractions, as well as a huge gift shop. Admission is free to their outdoor stockade and western museum indoors which includes vintage cowboy gear, firearms, Buffalo Bill photos, and the permanent home to the Buffalo Bill Miniature Wild West Show.
Two nice ladies working in the gift shop today- gave them a loonie and toonie- as we got to talking about our money and they didn't know about the "loonies" and "toonies" of Canadian money, but now they do!
The Indian Muffler Man
Me
Old time Buffalo Bill photos
Lots of animal heads on the walls: bulls, buffalo, deer
Part of the replica of the Wild West Show- hand carved- over 20,000 figures- taking 12 years to complete
