Sunday- June 16th- Happy Father's Day

Well, I had meant to write a few lines first thing this morning but it just didn't happen- and it's already the end of the day- but did want to wish all dads a Happy Father's Day- and hope everyone had a special day today.

One of our daughters was out of town today, so we skipped having the family bbq with Gerry, and Gerry and I just had a bbq together. Angus burgers I picked up at Walmart were very good too- first time buying, and thought they were much better than burgers at one of my favorite restaurants . At $9.97 for 8 burgers they had me think twice before I picked them up, but I'm glad I chose them- as they really were a quality burger. 

Erika dropped off a card from her and Ria yesterday for Gerry- gift cards and scratch lotto tickets. I got him 2 short sleeved shirts for work and a cologne and body spray set from Avon.

Yesterday when cooking homemade pizza, my element blew in the stove. Gerry said it was going to be happening soon as it had been glowing very bright off and on over the past week. It scared me though when there was a flame that shot out in the oven and smoke..didn't know what to do except shut off the oven. Good things Gerry was home, came to the rescue and had half hour to get to the hardware store to get a new element for $45, before they closed.

Bought a new 3 piece dark walnut bedroom set from Canadian Tire, took a while for Gerry to get those all assembled! Lots of pieces, parts, etc..wouldn't be something I would be good at! Entire set with tax was $265 so we are trying to sell our other honey oak 3 piece set he got from his ex ( and deceased) father in law, years back. Hoping to get $280-$300 to recoup our money and just make it an even trade off. Our homemade headboard is a different brown as well so Gerry is going to see about getting some dark walnut stain to re-do that as well. Much cheaper than buying a new headboard..

Sunday is always bath day for Jake so will be off soon to do that.
Looking forward to Ria's return from the city as she's suppose to be stopping by with some Crave cupcakes! Yum!

Will be busy this week upcoming planning for our trip out on Sunday to Vancouver. Looking forward to it!

More Photos of the Yard- (cont'd)

The garden is in....although no one had carrot seeds this year anywhere in town!
-so we have strawberries ( something new this year)
-tomatoes ( usually have troubles growing those-will try this year)
-peas, green onions and potatoes
-raspberry trees beside the garden as well

Gerry rebuilt the back fence this year and on the other side, now has the wood pile and room to pull his truck in and off the road.With the back lane being narrow, he was often worried in the winter that he had his back end on the road a bit. Now there is a full parking stall back there.
Also, the car port ( grey) is just for storage, but replaces the old yellow one we had last year that was in a different spot, and had been patched, etc., due to a heavy snow that caved in the roof one winter. We got this car port for $199 plus tax- and they were regular almost $500.
We also sold 2 sheds this year to make more room to re do the back yard.

The Yard

I've been coming up with the ideas lately on how I want to see things around the yard and Gerry's been completing my "vision"-LOL
Replaced our older figurine type ornaments,( which I'll try to sell), for a cuter looking one to start today- the terrier dog behind Jakey in this picture. He first saw it today and ran at it a few times. It does kind of look realistic. 

Next Gerry completed the rock garden, planting the flowers we got at Canadian Tire today in our planters, ( never had these last year). The flowers were looking kind of harsh over at Canadian Tire, but I'm sure they will be quite colorful once they start growing.I chose white for the middle planter and the other two have purple and pink in them, favorite colors of Ria and Erika's!

Our front yard also sprouted a ton of dandelions  in one day, wow- they do spread! So had to pick up weed killer today as well for those. Gerry has 5 days off so he is working through his "honey do list". I'm not much into yard work, but I do have visions.Will share more photos in the days to come.

Teaching Your Teen the Value of Money

Teenagers are a fickle bunch. They want something really badly one moment and don’t care about it at all the next. This is one of the reasons that teenagers are notoriously bad at managing their money: everything feels like "The Most Important Thing Ever" in the moment.

So what do you do to ensure that they learn how to responsibly manage their money?

1. Teach Your Kids to Find Deals

Instead of talking your teens out of wanting something or simply refusing to allow them to use money they've earned to buy whatever it is, insist that they do some research to find out whether it can be purchased on sale, with a coupon or as part of a deal. For example, teach them how to find the leaked Black Friday adds 2013 early  (some deals are already out for some shopping outlets) and coupon codes for the things they want.

It might be hard to drive home the point that “expensive” doesn't automatically mean “more cool.” Instead, to use one example, she can use The Gap coupons for that sweater she’s been coveting which will help free up part of her allowance to be spent on a matching accessory. 

2. Make a Rule About Savings

Once your kids get old enough to earn their own money, convincing them not to spend it on something stupid is going to be a lot more difficult. After all, if they worked to earn it, why not spend it on what they want? It’s the same logic that you use for the things you buy for yourself, right?

Instead of fighting the urge to prevent them from spending, make a rule about saving. From the time you start giving them their first allowance (or paying them for extra chores), require that they save a certain percentage of what they “earn.” This way it will already be a habit when they have after school jobs or are earning money around your neighborhood. It’s still a good idea to keep the rule in place, though—just in case!

3. Stop Buying Things For Your Kids

If your kids are old enough to go out and earn their own spending money, they are old enough to have to buy the things they want (that you may or may not approve of) themselves. Sure you want to keep them in the basics: food, clothes, shelter. Beyond that, though (or if those get out of hand) make it a rule that your kids buy things for themselves.

This seems really straightforward but what will be hard is when your kids save up most of the price of something but still want your help paying for the rest. This is when you need to dig in. Encourage your kids to keep saving. If you step in and “save the day” whenever they’re a little short on cash, they won’t know how to be resourceful when, as an adult, something costs more than they planned or if a paycheck doesn't look like it is going to stretch as far as they’d like.

It’s hard helping your kids become independent. By teaching them how to find deals, how to save and not allowing yourself to be a money tree, though, you’re on the right track!
