Snow Flurries and Minus 1

Thursday, October 15, 2015

Saw the first of the snow last night and still remained this morning.
We've had off and on flurries today.

Was running around doing some errands this morning including getting a bit of US money at the bank. Still trying to leave!

Gerry has gone to get the new tires on the SUV- $450 for 2 installed.
Then also has to get a new air filter for the RV. He's hoping to as well get over to the mechanics on the rad too for the RV see what can be done. They have to order but he will do the install.

Will update on this post a bit later.

October is National Cookie Month

Wednesday, October 14, 2015

Did you know that October is National Cookie Month? This is great news for all the cookie lovers out there. And a good reason to celebrate October, with all the delicious variety of cookies that you can choose from.

There is a huge selection of cookie flavors. You can get everything from chocolate chip to sugar cookies and many more in between. Cookies can be purchased in packages, or you can make your own from a mix if you like.

And who doesn’t like cookies? They are a great dessert to enjoy anytime. So it is really nice that October is dedicated to cookies, with National Cookie Month!

Our friends below would love to tell you about what their brand is offering up for National Cookie Month:

The newly renovated DoubleTree by Hilton Dallas Market Center is located in the heart of the Dallas Market Center and like other DoubleTree by Hilton hotels, is sure to welcome guests with a warm, chocolate chip cookie at check-in. This all began in the 1980s, when many of the DoubleTree by Hilton hotels across the country used cookies as VIP treats. In 1986, the secret recipe was developed so every hotel could offer the same treat. Now, a select group of bakeries around the world hold the secret recipe to ensure every guest gets the same, delicious cookie at every DoubleTree by Hilton hotel and resort.

( I've had these cookies and they are to die for!)

Krusteaz Cookie Mixes-

Who says cookies are only for special occasions? Krusteaz Cookie Mixes make it easier than ever to whip up a homemade batch any day of the week. New in 2015, Krusteaz is adding new and improved cookie mixes to its assortment of fan favorites, each of which offers a sweet twist on Krusteaz’s classically delicious cookies. What better way to celebrate National Cookie Month, than to enjoy some delicious Krusteaz cookies!

My Review of a Laser Fax Machine by Brother

I recently had the opportunity to review the  Brother Fax-2480 machine. This machine really out does my older Brother fax machine, that we've had for years! This machine is a laser fax machine. It comes with a  33.6k bps modem, which makes for very fast communications. It has a transmission speed of approximately 2.5 seconds per sheet. It is awesome!

It also features a 20 page capacity auto document feeder. And has a generous 250 sheet front loading paper capacity. There is also an optional high capacity replacement toner cartridge available.

The IntelliFAX-2840 is a compact fax machine which has up to 272 broadcast locations, and 222-station auto dialing. This fax machine also has 16MB standard memory capacity with dual access.

We recently replaced our older machine for this one. Our older Brother fax machine worked great and really lasted us a long time. Although I was having issues with the phone cord on it, plus I was getting interruptions with the line because of it I think.I changed the cord but it still didn't help with the line and static, and the phone just not working anymore, but I guess it had seen it's last days.

                                             ( the old machine)

It's nice to have a fax machine though for the home- I have used mine quite a fair bit over the years. The Fax-2480, is a laser fax machine that is perfect for home offices like ours. We wouldnt be without one! And although the new one looked so much more bigger- it fit perfect in the spot where it replaced the old machine.

Today's Quick Tip

By raising your deductible on your insurance for vehicles or home, you can save on your monthly payments. This is a great idea if you rarely ever make a claim. We recently raised all of ours for our SUV, car and RV to the max. of $700 deductible. We currently had them at $350 deductibles each.

Plan a Family Pizza Night and Plan for Fun

Monday, October 12, 2015

A family night out for dinner is something that everyone, parents and children, look forward too. While family dinners at a restaurant are great ways to get everyone to catch up and enjoy themselves, they can often be very expensive. When planning a family night out, there are steps you can take to make it affordable and fun!

Planning a family dinner can be a challenge, even for the most on-top of families. One of the most popular options for families is a good old fashioned pizza night. Pizza is the popular choice for most families. Pizza is great because kids love it, and it can be made in any variety of ways. If you want to create a healthy option, all sorts of vegetables can be added as toppings. If you want to cut loose, you can add all the meats and cheeses that you desire.

It doesn’t have to be an expensive proposition either! Classica Pizza & Pasta in Toronto is one of the best options for families. With great pizzas and plenty of other Italian fare on the menu, Classico is the perfect spot for a family dinner, where both kids and parents will have a meal that truly satisfies them.

Family dinners can be a great idea to get the kids out of the house for a bit, but date nights are another great option for parents that need to get away by themselves. A classic wine bar is a great option for mom and dad that want to spend an evening with themselves. It also takes away from the classic bar scene that adults with kids are looking to get away from.

Whether you are looking for a family dinner out of the house, or a date night to get out of the house, there are always plenty of options available to have an enjoyable time while not spending much money. A little research and planning is all that it takes, and you’ll be going from another night into a fun night out.

Happy Thanksgiving Canada!

Sunday, October 11, 2015

Wishing all my Canadian readers a safe and happy Thanksgiving holiday weekend.

Saturday October 10

Saturday, October 10, 2015

Thanksgiving long weekend here in Canada- but no plans for us. Kids won't be home and we're busy getting ready to leave next week to head south for x amount of months,( "x" because we're really not too sure how long yet.) Been putting off buying the medical/health insurance we will need to get before we leave- as a 4 month stay will be at least $600. It's alot of money for sure, but I would hate for something to happen and be stuck with an even bigger hospital bill. It looks like Gerry's work insurance will still have us covered till October 31st though so will shave some of the cost off. We were going to buy before we left but realize we don't need it quite yet now.

On top of that Gerry needs 2 back tires for the SUV so that's another $450 before we leave.
He retired last Friday and is very much enjoying being at home. He'll still have one more full cheque coming to us then a  1 week cheque and then a pay out for his holiday pay. Next year in the Spring we should still get another decent tax return and he'll get one more company bonus cheque. His first pension cheques will start December 1st- half of his take home pay he had before. Who else is living on a pension ? So soon we'll be called Stretching the One Income Pension Cheque-LOL

Gerry may or may not do something for work come Summer. He hasn't given it too much thought, although a neighbour was the one that mentioned a job possibly doing something with Parks. For now we're taking it one day at a time.

We had a beautiful day here today that got up to 19 degrees but in the forecast we're seeing snow is arriving the 19th of October- and by then we'll already be in the USA.

Our Review: Canada Pooch

Sunday, October 4, 2015

Our "doggy models" today: Jakey and Be
Owners: Me and Erika

Can't say how much a fan Gerry and I are of outerwear we have for Jakey, through Canada Pooch.

Jakey has no undercoat so is always cold. Once the weather turns, he has a hoodie and a winter coat for colder weather. He had another rain jacket from another company but we have honestly found it too thin and more of a windbreaker than a rain coat that he needs. Although he hates to get wet, he still enjoys going out for his "routine walks".  He just doesnt always realize it's raining or sprinkling til he gets outside! We wanted to have something for him that would keep him warm AND dry and he loves his new Canada Pooch Torrential Tracker Jacket.

If I would have to promote one brand whole heartedly, it would be Canada Pooch for doggie clothing. They are truly #1.

Although Canada Pooch sells high quality and functional pet outerwear, they also sell accessories and travel beds...which Erika had "Be" review for us.

Erika says : "Be" loves her new Rugged Rest "Go" Travel Bed from Canada Pooch!! It has a dig, chew & water resistant shell while still being comfortable. The bed also includes a non-slip bottom, perfect for our vehicle. The material is also easy to clean and the bed itself has a velcro roll up feature for easy storage. The Rugged Rest "Go" Travel Bed is a must for any dog who loves to travel and Be loves even using it in our condo, when we're not on the road traveling to visit family!
