Day 6- Done! But Tired of Being on the Road!

Sunday, November 15, 2015

After being on the road for 6 days I am TIRED of being on road. Gerry too. Tomorrow we will be at our final destination in Arizona. We'll be able to sit put for a while, relax, and not have to pay RV gas fees and electrical site, campground fees. Will let you all know more once we get there.
Left Fillmore, Utah today and arrived Flagstaff, Utah this evening- over 6 hours driving and some stops. We will say we found the folks in Utah very friendly though! The landscape has changed so much along the way- we've really seen some beautiful areas!

Despite being only 3 hours from Grand Canyon, it's out of the way and would mean if we went this time then we wouldn't make it to our destination tomorrow, and I really don't want to be on the road any longer...well at least not driving anymore. Just want to settle for a bit. So will see what we decide to do but may just pass it by this time.

SUBWAY® CANADA INTRODUCES NEW SHAVED STEAK WITH NO ARTIFICIAL COLOURS, FLAVOURS OR PERSERVATIVES

Thursday, November 12, 2015

The SUBWAY® restaurant chain has introduced to customers a new shaved steak at the more than 3,200 restaurants across Canada. The shaved steak contains no artificial flavours, colours or preservatives. This is the latest menu improvement announced as part of the SUBWAY® brand’s journey to make the food it serves even better.

The shaved steak follows the introduction of other products in Canada, such as their bread, which contains no artificial colours, flavours or preservatives. It is consistent with the brand’s commitment to remove all artificial colours, flavours and preservatives from all of its sandwiches in North America over the next 14 months.

Since its opening 50 years ago, the SUBWAY® chain, one of the first open kitchen concepts, always makes its sandwiches and salads right up front where everything is seen and with the customers input on making their perfect sandwich using a wide variety of freshly baked bread, lean meats, vegetables and toppings.

This trend will continue in the immediate future, with the introduction of a new ham, roast beef, turkey, chicken strips and chicken patty in Canada during next year that will also be free of artificial preservatives, flavours or colours.

Thumbs up Subway!

Day 3 on the Road- Shelby, Montana

Up yesterday at 7 am and on road till about 10 pm- was  alot of driving.... course not all day driving- we did stop to eat  a few times and a stop at Walmart but still a long day "on the road".
Did the border crossing for the Canada/US border. Not sure why though that customs always needs to make you feel like a criminal. So many questions and then if it's not to their liking, more questions. It's like there IS a right and a wrong answer. Grrrrr.

Stopped here overnight in Shelby, Montana at the Shelby RV Park and Resort- have been here before. Saw a guy drop his dog off in the park area here and let it poop near one of the cabins, leave the poop there but cleaning his dog's butt off with paper towel before it got into his truck. Like really buddy?? Very disrespectful of the other people camping here! And he didn't even seem to be camping here!
                                                                Our RV and site

Comfort Inn just down the hill from us- where we check in for site

Ran out of water last night in the holding tanks. Guess when we picked up this RV they never filled tanks full enough. Most sites have water turned off but Gerry found a running line up by the bathhouse so will head up that way soon and fill, so we can do dishes in sink, use the toilets in here, and have water for a shower if we wish. Had to shower up at the bathhouse today- and yes, since others use these - we make sure to wear our flip flops- but I do prefer my own shower in the RV! Once I get water back in here again will be back to my own bathroom.

Your One Income Story by Suzanne of Missouri

Sunday, November 8, 2015

Story by
Suzanne of Missouri

For the last five years we have solely been a one income family. Prior to that, I worked part time.  We are a homeschooling family and I felt led to stop working and make our family my priority. This choice is not without its complications and frustrations. Before we could face the practicality of living with one income – I had to overcome the emotional aspect of it. I found that I kept trying to affix my identity to something. I further had to overcome envy and dare I say a little coveting as well. By only having one income, I was faced with a lot of thoughts of what everyone else got to do that we didn’t get to do. Once the emotional was overcome – we sat down to figure out what were must haves. And then what was left we could see how to stretch.

These are some of our ways to meet the wants: Each of our children are allowed one outside activity that requires weekly dues or payment, such as Chess Club or Piano or Golf.  For my husband, we allot a certain amount for golf – he only pays cash – in part so that during tax time when I am looking at all the receipts I don’t get mad at the amount allotted for golf and give him grief about what we could have done with that money!

We do not eat out at real restaurants except if we have gift cards. We do allow for fast food because I would go crazy if I had to cook every meal – as that is 21 meals a week and I find that I need at least one break.

We also shop 90% of our groceries at Aldi. We have found that for us, they are the most economical. I do look at the sales in the paper – but usually those are items we don’t eat. I have a menu schedule and I rotate it and can usually keep our food bill under $120 per week. The other 10% of our groceries is Sam’s Club for toilet paper, frozen chicken, milk (because they seem to always be the cheapest) and cat supplies.

I’ve tried coupons. I’ve tried a lot of different things – but with a 3 yr old, 13 yr old, 15 yr old and 16 yr old and homeschooling – I just don’t have the diligence to keep on top of that.

I also barter a lot. For example, a local church that my mom attends needed a new website. I helped them build it and they shared with us their leftovers from their gatherings that they had each week. They found they always bought too much food and so we were on the receiving end of that.

My husband is a contractor.  Sometimes, our life is feast or famine. I’ve learned above all to trust God that during the famine – He will provide. Perhaps, not like I would like – but we have never had to go without – although we’ve had some tough times where I was faced with discouragement and a host of other emotions.  Yet, when we get to the other side of those – I see that always God has met our need – even if it was going to a local food bank for a week until the next job came.

I think at the end of the day – find out what works for you. Websites like this offer great direction. But we are each on our own path and if we keep working through things (and praying) we will find what works best for each of us!

Photos of Our RV- 2005 Forest River Georgetown XL 370

Wanted to share some photos of the RV we bought and traded our last one off for.

This one has an extra 3 feet on it- plus kitchen seems bigger to us.There are 2 bathrooms, (for now, as we want to convert one into a room for washer/ dryer/storage), and this one has 3 slides and an oven- which my last one didn't have. This one is a year newer than our last one, and less miles. It doesnt have a tub though which is also something we'd like to out in. Plus the booth and couch will eventually need re-upholstering. Okay, I can already see alot of changed for me to make- or Gerry to make-LOL- including spray painting or changing out all the gold fixtures in it. Also taking the mattress out and putting our new one in as ours is nicer and newer than the one on here! And I like my OWN mattress.

We'll keep you updated as we change things though.
Our other one is already at the dealers and we will be picking this one up in a few days and hitting the road south- again!

News Update- November 3

Tuesday, November 3, 2015

Thought I'd share a few tidbits about us- since the last time I dropped a post about us.

- Well looks like we're still going to try to get away. We don't have any snow here yet and the weather has still been mild.  Looking at a bigger RV in Radisson, Sk., about 40 minutes outside of Saskatoon, Sk.. Since I have an iron infusion ( my first one so will see what that is like), this week, we'll also be making a trip with the RV we have now and try to make a deal. If we can, then we'll come back home and leave both RV's there, while they are prepping the new one. We'll come home, load up the SUV with clothes and food stuff and head back to pick it up. IF all goes well. Will know more this Thursday or Friday.
- Had found out while we were in the US this last time we were paying .35 more on each dollar. Our dollar sure needs a pick me up!
-I got a letter in mail for jury duty in mid December but won't be able to go due to health problems- so sent that one back and said cant do.
-Found out today by emailing the manufacturer of our RV toilet, that our valve that the dealer charged us $75+ for when we said we had the leak last time out, was/ is suppose to be under a 2 year warrenty! They told us it wasnt, so we're going to try to collect that back from someone- grrr!
-Seeing that Gerry was still covered under his work benefits- they hadnt cut him off YET, we filled some final presciptions, and are hoping that my iron IV and travel will also be covered or partially covered, as it's quite expensive, but we'll have to wait and see I guess. Either way, I need to get it done. But the injection is over $300 and plus the travel as well.
-Have started on thinking about Christmas and gifts, although it looks like we may not be here, and will have to do gift exchanges with some of the family here, once we return.
-Gerry said this will be his last full pay cheque this payday - since he retired.
- Getting dark so early- think it was 5:30 today when we lost the daylight. By 10 pm we're ready for bed most nights! Miss the daylight, the sun and the blue sky.

Flipp For Ultimate Savings- Review of the Flipp App

Sunday, November 1, 2015

Review By: Erika

I’ve loved the Flipp app ever since it launched so I was pretty excited to have the opportunity to do the #FlippCouponChallenge on behalf of Stretching The One Income Dollar.

After checking flyers on the Flipp app, I found some coupons and matchups I could use based on stores I would normally shop at. Once I had my list written and coupons printed, I was ready to go!

My first stop was CO-OP. Although I don’t shop here on a regular basis, I find they always have great sales/deals and it’s even better if you’re a CO-OP member. Using Flipp, I found 2 coupons to use while here and both were also matchups: Classico pasta sauce & Hunts super snack packs. At checkout, I saved a total of $10.26 and $1.75 of that was thanks to the Flipp app!

My second stop was Shopper’s Drug Mart. This was probably my best store in terms of savings. It’s also a great place to shop if you have an Optimum card, you can earn points on almost everything! Using Flipp, I found 6 coupons to use while here and 4 of them were also matchups: Royale paper towel, Dove body wash, Lysol products & St. Ives products. At checkout, I saved a total of $27.80 and $9.50 of that was thanks to the Flipp app!

My last stop was Sobey’s. This is where I shop most often for groceries since it’s so close to where we live. They also take Air Miles, which is nice to collect for money off your groceries! Using Flipp, I found 2 coupons to use while here and 1 of them was also a matchup: Astro yogurt. At checkout, I saved a total of $5.48 and $1.50 of that was thanks to the Flipp app!

These are the coupons I ended up using from Flipp:

Unfortunately, I came back home with 2 unused coupons due to products being out of stock. However, I still saved $43.54 and $12.75 of that was all thanks to the Flipp app!!

Overall, I really enjoyed participating in the #FlippCouponChallenge. Although it takes some planning and patience, it definitely made grocery shopping a little bit more fun. The new revamped Flipp app is great – with flyers, matchups and coupons all at your fingertips, you’ll “flipp” over how much you can save!!
