NYC on a Budget

New York City is certainly somewhere that you could spend a fortune. You might have seen pictures of all of the fancy hotels, glamorous locations, tourist hotspots, and designer shops. You might know people that have been shopping in New York City at Christmas time, spending a fortune on gifts, enjoying the season attractions, eating in world-famous restaurants and staying in the finest city center hotels. If you’ve never spent any time in NYC yourself, you could be forgiven for thinking that that is the only way to do it. Most of us assume that a visit to New York has to cost the earth because that’s how everyone else seems to do it. But, it’s simply not the case.

New York is a big city. This means that there are plenty of options. For every fancy five star restaurant, twenty hot dog vendors are serving classic NY treats perfect for those looking to have the experience on a budget. You just need to put a little more thought into it. Here are some tips for visiting New York City on a tighter budget.

Make a Budget

The biggest mistake that people make when traveling anywhere on a budget is not actually making a budget. They have a vague idea of how much they want to spend, and they might stick to it when it comes to accommodation and flights. Then, they arrive, and without a detailed budget, they are in danger of overspending.

If you need to stick to a budget, make one. Know exactly how much you have to spend on flights, accommodation, traveling to and from the airport, transport for the duration of your trip, food and drink, days out and visits to attractions and souvenirs.

Time Your Visit Well

New York is incredibly busy at important times of the year. Around Christmas, New Year, Valentines Day and the peak summer weeks costs are likely to be much higher. Visit between January and early April for a cheaper break.

Book Online

Booking flights and accommodation online can be a great way to compare prices and get great deals. But, that’s not all that you can book. Attraction entrance, subway tickets, and Broadway show tickets can all be bought in advance online.

Stay Out of Town

New York is enormous, and some areas are much more expensive than others. On a budget, you certainly don't want a hotel overlooking Times Square. Staying outside the main tourist hotspots can save you a lot of money.

Utilize Public Transport

New York cabs are famous all over the world, but they are by no means the only way to get about. Take the subway, trains, and buses to save money, and walk as much as you can.

Visit Free Attractions

Some of the more popular attractions in New York might not cost you a penny. Head to Central Park, the New York Library and some of the best NYC museums for a cheap day out.

Watch Some TV

Plenty of famous shows are filmed in a theatre in New York, in front of a live studio audience. Try and get studio seats online before you travel, and you might be able to get up close to your favorite shows.

Product Review: Brand Review: Wilson Predator

Oh the nice weather- we all like to get out and be outdoors , but with the nice weather, so does everything else like to be out! The mice run wild, the insects crawl and fly so freely and even dogs, cats, raccoons and so on will be out roaming freely. 

If you have some problems with rodents or other animals, a great brand we have been using is Wilson.

This Spring we noticed mice. Even the neighbors did too! We tried the Predator Sonic Max Pro and even though we also put out the Predator Tip Traps, we have yet to catch any as the Sonic Max Pro has been great at keeping the mice away. We have one in the shop and one under the mobile home .Both though are truly great products. I love the tip traps. I felt better that if I would catch a mouse I would just release it rather than killing it.

We also use Wilson's Predator Animal Barrier. It's been great that we have only needed to have one can for the full year, to keep away any animals near the garbage and as well any more mice or squirrels that may want to get into any of the bags in the sheds! Love it!

These products are sure to keep your home, garage, sheds, etc., all free from those headaches you want to be free of!

Wonderful Family Recipes From The Cookbooks of Barry C. Parsons and a Giveaway! (Canada)

I first learnt of Barry C. Parsons and his cookbooks, through an Instagram picture I came across for a cake recipe. The cake looked so good, catching my eye, that I looked more into info on this recipe and hunted down the web site- Rock Recipes. Soon I was to find even more yummy looking recipes for meals, desserts and snacks. The recipes looked yummy but they also were simple- simple ingredients and easy to fix. I like this! I love recipes that are down to earth, comforting, and recipes that mom or gramma used to make.

Going forward I had the opportunity to review three of his books:

5 Great Jobs That Allow You To Travel

If you’re a lover of traveling, you’ll know how much the experience can totally change your life. You meet new people, you see beautiful places, and you’re in touch with the world in ways that you couldn’t possibly be before. However, for all of its positive sides, travel does have some downfalls. Primarily, it’s pretty expensive, which can mean that funding it is near impossible.

Wherever you are in the world, people are going to need bartenders, waiters and waitresses. Hospitality is always a great route to take, so if you have some experience working in bars and restaurants, then see what roles you could secure in the country that you’re traveling to. This is also a great way for you to meet some new people, so it is definitely a worthwhile endeavor.

#2: Nursing

Another thing that every country needs is doctors and nurses, and if you want to experience a different part of the world (or even just your country) then there are many opportunities for you to do so. Get in touch with a travel nurse staffing agency if you’re a qualified healthcare professional, and they can help to find you a placement in the location of your choosing. It’s also rewarding to help out elsewhere!

#3: Blogging

Blogging is one of those things that you can do from anywhere; whether you’re staying at home, or you’re heading further afield. Pick a field that you want to focus on - like travel, perhaps - and get writing!

Investment is one of those things that could end up earning you a lot of money, and it can be much better than leaving your cash to sit in a bank account. However, you have to know what you’re doing here, and it is a gamble; albeit one that usually pays off. This job is becoming increasingly popular, and agencies which you can join and get work from are also popping up all over the place. The beauty of it is that you can have clients from all over the world, you don’t have to meet them or go anywhere, as long as you have a good internet connection then you’re away. Also, there is far more work available now than just traditional PA work, so whatever industry you’re in, it’s worth having a look at some of the agencies to see what kinds of tasks are available. A lot of people are looking for data entry, admin, and travel bookings, but others are looking for you to research restaurants in a particular town for them or manage their social media, write their blogs or help them with their CV. There is a wide variety of work available and if you feel that you’re not equipped to do it from home, then have a look online because you’ll be surprised how many free tools there are available which can help you with more significant projects, for example, look at this free project plan template. There’s free software too, so don’t worry that you, on your own, working from home isn’t enough, because it is. Did you know that you could still sit at home (in your pajamas) and network? However, there are more ways to network and schmooze online too. Start by joining an online community; there are loads, so have a look and see which ones are right for you and get chatting. For this, you will have to get out of your pajamas, but it will be worth it to put a face to a name and have some face to face contact and see where the relationship can go.

While this probably won’t bring you more business, it will bring you more money. Just a small amount, but online surveys are quick and easy, and while you’re waiting for the kettle to boil or having a quick sandwich, you could be earning a few extra pennies which all add up, and at the end of the month, you will have some extra spending money in your pocket.

Online Selling

Similarly, this won’t bring you more business, but it’s easy to do at home. It’s essentially killing two birds with one stone because you can be working while people are bidding on or just looking at your items and then as soon as someone commits to buying you can pop it in the post. You can take photos of the product at home, if anyone has any questions, you can answer them there and then, saving yourself time meaning you can sell even more stuff that you don’t want. It’s a great way to declutter too - so more like three birds with one stone.

Set Up A Side Business

Whatever job you do working from home, you could also do another one. Even if you think you don’t have time, there are some ideas for a side hustle that don’t require any extra time. Do you have a spare room? Rent it out. This doesn’t require any extra time, but it does give you a bit of extra income each month. How about getting paid to walk people’s dogs? Everyone needs a break during the day, so going for a walk at lunchtime with a furry friend and getting paid for it is a no brainer. If you have neighbors who are at work all day, offer your services. It will save them a tonne of money on doggy daycare and mean that: one, you look like a good neighbor; two, you get to go for a nice walk which is good for your mind and body; three, if you like dogs then you get to spend some time with one; and four, you get extra money in your pocket for doing something you enjoy. If dogs aren’t your thing, you could offer your ironing and laundry services? If you’re going to be doing yours for your family anyway then what’s a few extras thrown in which you get paid for? You can do it in front of the TV at the end of the day (still in your pajamas if you want). Some people find ironing really therapeutic, whereas others absolutely hate it and will happily pay someone else to do it for them. You could be that someone.

Love My New Reading Glasses From Readers.com

Over the years my eyes have gotten worst, but mainly for reading. As one ages I had read that you can get age related muscular degeneration. Which is what I believe I have. I know alot of 40-50+ use reading glasses. I have a few pairs from the dollar store, but I am really liking my new ones I got through Readers.com. 

I got a pair of readers with a metallic frame for in the house reading and being on the computer. But the ones I am most excited about are the ones that are reading sunglasses! I was only wearing my reading glasses outside before when I was reading and had no protection from the sun. Now with my reading sunglasses, I can safely read outdoors without the squint or worry of sun damage to my eyes. Plus- their stylish! And affordable!
