5 Ways To Celebrate Grandparents Day This Year

Every year, the National Grandparents day is celebrated on the first Sunday that comes after Labor’s day.  But before you find out how to celebrate the grandparents’ day this year, here’s a story that is worth reading. In 1970, a West Virginia housewife, Marian McQuade introduced the idea of a setting a day aside to promote people to visit their elderly family members. To turn this idea into reality, she started lobbying the policymakers and after years of struggle, in 1978, the first Sunday after Labor Day was declared as the National Grandparents Day by the then President of United States.

So, if you are from among those lucky few, who have their grandparents around, here’s an opportunity to appreciate their presence in your life. Listed below are some of the ideas that can make this day more special for your grandparents and for you:

1)      Find a special gift for them
Though it can be difficult to find a suitable gift for those, who are around 50 years older than you, but that’s the purpose of this day- bridging the generation gap. Try to find out about their choices and interests and you would surely be able to finalize a wonderful gift for them. If you are looking for discounts on the perfect gift for your grandparent then visit frugaa website today!

2)      Spend entire day with them
The day belongs to your grandparents and must be celebrated with good spirit. Other engagements in your life can wait. Enjoy a hearty meal with your grandparents and do what they love doing. Spend entire day without criticizing or condemning the things. Just be around and talk to them as much as you can. They just need your company and that would make their day special!

3)      Get to know about their life
Talk about old things, their childhood memories, student days, first love, the other incidents that they still cherish. What was the most exciting moment of their life? In case they don’t want to discuss something, don’t pressurize. It can be a great idea to look through old pictures together.

4)      Share your dreams
Tell them how you are planning your life in days to come. What are your objectives? They might come up with interesting ideas or experiences that might help you later in your life.

5)      Tell them that you would love them-always
The day belongs to your grandparents and don’t forget to tell them that you love them with all your heart and will always need their love. There can be no better gift than your love for your grandparents!

Some Jasper Adventures We Must Check Out!

Wednesday, September 3, 2014

On our upcoming trip west we are looking forward to 'living on the edge' a little bit while still staying safely tucked. We will be getting our adrenaline going on the Glacier Skywalk which separates us from a 918 foot drop. From this sky walk you can view birds soaring above the sky, majestic waterfalls, wildlife and fossils.

The edge cliff walkway is full of nature-inspired exhibits. You can look around at nature like it was meant to be seen thousands of years ago. Who knew that you could travel through time so easily? You can see some alpine and glacial vistas. In such a tough terrain it is wonderful to see the great ways that nature can adapt and shift in order to survive.

However, the glass floor observation is a must for anyone. You will feel like you are gliding on air as you explore the world literally right under your feet. The whole experience is guided in a story telling format so you can actually understand more of what you are seeing. Sometimes a good story can make the information stick a whole lot better than any visitor book. I am sure that this will be an experience that we will not forget.

The Columbia Icefield Glacier Adventure has been compared to some of the great wonders on the world, and we are very lucky to have it right here in Canada. We are even more lucky to be able to visit it on our upcoming adventure. During this tour we will visit the Athabasca Glacier by a huge vehicle designed for glacial travel- the Ice Explorer. During the drive the guide will share much interesting information about the glacier, and ice fields. With all the talk about global warming it is especially important to preserve these areas and appreciate them as much as we can.

During the tour you can step out on the glacier and take some of the best photos imaginable. It will truly be a spectacular experience, as some of the highest mountains in the Canadian Rockies are located around the Ice Field.

Both of these adventures are offered through Brewster Travel Canada, and are designed to show people the beauty that we Canadians are very lucky to have in our own back yard. We cannot wait to explore this part of Alberta, and see all the wonderful scenery.

Jasper Sky Tram- Alberta

There is so much to see and do in the Canadian Rockies that it is hard to see it all. However, you can most certainly try to.

On our upcoming vacation we will be riding the Jasper Sky Tram in Jasper Alberta. You  board one of the fully enclosed trams at a lower level and take a seven minute flight up the mountain, narrated by an attendant that will point out all the sights that you may miss on your own. The ride up is very nearly an elevation change of 1000 ft, and the views are spectacular. At the top you sit above the clouds and can see six mountain ranges, glacially fed lakes, rivers and the town of Jasper which is a beauty in its own right.

When riding the Sky Tram you do not have to leave anyone behind, well behaved dogs are always welcome to ride the tram, however we do not think that this is something that Jakey would enjoy, and would rather not have something happen on our way up where the little guy gets nervous.

We cannot wait to see the magnificence of western Canada from this great vantage point, it will most certainly be a trip that we will remember for a lifetime, besides if you are "above the clouds" the weather is always good...right?

Tuesday September 2

Tuesday, September 2, 2014

Well, here I am again, at the computer after 11 pm- while Gerry and Jakey are fast asleep. But I did want to share some news before I went off to bed. This week Gerry will be heading to Saskatoon to pick up our RV and trade off this other one. We had thought we had a sale for this one we have now, which would have been nice, but the people that looked at it never did come back around. Would have given us more money to put towards the newer one. Now, we'll only be getting about $15,000 on this one on a trade. The sale would have brought us $22,000. We just can't seem to sell it and tried all Spring and Summer.

Gerry will go to Saskatoon, do the paperwork, and come back. We'll load it up and head out preferably on the weekend, going to Jasper, Alberta, for about a week. With this RV, we have bought a used dolly as well for $1200 and will be able to take my car. Last trip out to Montana we found it a bit difficult to get around with the RV in towns..so alot of things we passed up on. This will allow us to park and just take the car where we need to go. Will be so much easier we think.

So do watch for our upcoming posts on Jasper, Alberta!

M&M Meat Shops' National Family Dinner Night Encourages Family Mealtime on Sept. 18 Plus A Sweepstake!

It’s no secret that our lives are busy. More and more Canadian families are finding it difficult to sit down for dinner. In fact, according to a recent survey conducted by M&M Meat Shops only 30 per cent of Canadian families eat together every night. Even more astonishing is that 20 per cent of families eat dinner together only two nights a week.

While nourishment is important, dinner is so much more than the food you eat. Dinner is time spent together to talk to your loved ones and to acknowledge the value of every friend and family member at the table. That’s why on Thursday, September 18, 2014, M&M Meat Shops is inviting all Canadians to take time out of their busy schedules, sit down for a family meal and participate in the 10th annual National Family Dinner Night.

PLUS: On Thursday, September 18, 2014, M&M Meat Shops is inviting all Canadians to focus on family for one sit-down meal by participating in the 10th Annual National Family Dinner Night. You could win one of three $100 M&M Meat Shops Gift Cards simply by sharing what you plan on cooking for dinner on: www.mmmeatshops.com

Classic Raspberry Crisp Recipe

Monday, September 1, 2014

Seems like the season is over for the raspberries we had in the yard. Even the wild blueberries we saw on the rocks around our place, and that Gerry picked while out quad-ding, are now done for the year.
I gave some to mom and Ria this summer, Gerry ate with cereal throughout the summer, and we did save some to freeze. The fruit trees grow wild in the yard.

The other day I baked an 8x8 pan of Classic Raspberry Crisp. Gerry said it was yummy! Always nice to have Pinterest to turn to to search for great recipes to try.

                                                                    Pre- baked

                                                                     All done!

Thompson's Helps to Revive Our Decks

With the summer almost behind us, now is a great time to start thinking about preparing your outdoor space for the next season. Thompson's Heavy Duty Deck Cleaner and Thompson's Water Seal Waterproofing Stain Solid are two great products that go hand in hand in preparing your deck and patio for another great season ahead.

With the long weekend weather not being too bad this weekend, Gerry was able to get both the front and back decks scrubbed with the deck cleaner, and stained.

The waterproofing stains come in a variety of shades and provide great protection for your wood until next season, protecting against water damage.

You should always  prep your deck with a heavy duty cleaner which removes weathered waterproofs and semi transparent stains, allowing for proofing products to work better. It sure made a difference, and really made our front and back decks looking like new once again!
