Self employed and easy life aren't always two phrases you think go together, but if you’re self employed there are some real ways you can make your life so much easier. Many people think being self employed is great. They think you do as much work as you want, watch TV, stay in your pyjamas all day, and just have a huge barrel of laughs all by yourself while stupid 9-5ers slog away in an office. Unfortunately, this couldn’t be further from the truth. Self employed people can find themselves lonely, without motivation, and struggling to overcome obstacles. Nobody teaches you how to become self employed, you just sort of...do it.
Here, we’ll take a look at 8 things you can do if you’re self employed to make your life easier.
1.Get Into A Routine
Start by getting into a routine. Have a bit of a ritual before you start work, such as dressing in proper clothes, making a hot drink, and reading a chapter of a book. You need to act like you’re at work and have set times for starting/finishing, or you’re going to find that your work and home life blend into one and become difficult to separate.
2. Get Out Of The House
If you can go to the library or a coffee shop to work for a while, do it. You could even split the time you work between home and another location. It can be difficult to get out of the house when you’re self employed, and if you’ve been cooped up for a while the thought of leaving the house can be unappealing. Get out there and treat yourself to a nice coffee, talk to a stranger, and enjoy the outdoors if you can. It’ll make a huge difference to your quality of life.
3. Prepare for Tax As Early On As You Can
If you’re going to electronically file tax returns, you will need to make sure you apply for EFIN and take other appropriate steps. Keep all of your receipts and invoices, and make sure you’re fully prepared for what this will mean for you. If you can’t do this, get an accountant.
4. Get Some Hobbies
Start painting or drawing. Go biking. Build model airplanes. Whatever you do, have a hobby or two to keep you going when work is stressing you out.
5. Know Your Worth
You don’t have to work with every client or accept every job. Knowing your worth is a must when you’re self employed. If something will cost you your mental health, say no.
6. Make Self Employed Friends
Try forums, meet ups, and co-working spaces to see if you can make friends who are self employed. You may be able to share tips and have somebody to work alongside. Just think of the Christmas parties too!
7. Build And Maintain A Support Network
Don’t neglect your friends and family. Stay in touch with them and maintain your support network.
8. Banish Guilt
You can’t feel guilty about not working when you’re with you family, and then feel guilty when you are working because you’re not with your family. It can be tough, but banishing those feelings is crucial for your mental health.
