Simple Steps To Help Clothes Last For Longer

Wednesday, November 6, 2019

Whether you want to make your clothes last longer because you can’t afford to buy more, or because you want to be more eco-conscious, it is a good thing to be doing. There is no getting away from the fact that ‘fast fashion’ isn’t doing great things for the plant, and because things don’t last for long, it can be damaging our wallets too, as it can mean buying again and again. The good news is that there are plenty of different things that you can do to make sure that your clothes last for longer. Here are some tips and suggestions to help. It would be great to hear what you think.

Buy Quality Pieces

When your budget is tight, it can be hard to justify buying an expensive item of clothing. But if you have the option of one item that is $100, or buying a few items that cost $20, but they don’t last, so it means that you have to buy again and again, then it can be a good idea to save for quality pieces, rather than get a few things that won’t last. Higher quality materials will last a lot longer, because they will be better made, and it will also mean that there is less of a carbon footprint from your clothing choices. You will also value your things much more when they have cost you more.

Use a Delicates Bag

There are plenty of different things that can help to keep clothes looking good for longer. One of which is using a delicates bag when you do your laundry. Delicate items like underwear and silky garments like shirts, can rip much more easily in a washing machine. So to reduce that chance, and to keep things lasting for a while, then a delicates bag will help to keep the lifespan of these items, and help them to last much more.

Get the Right Fit and Materials

Some clothes can last a long time, but we can help them if we get the clothes, and things like shoes that fit well and that are built to last. For example, choosing something like wide width boots could last longer, as there is a bit more room in them, and can fit your legs better for longer, for example. Choosing materials that are natural can help them to last longer, as items made from a lot of synthetic fabrics can bobble and look bad after a few cycles of washing.

Wash Less

Now, listen to this one. This isn’t about going around in dirty clothes. But it is really thinking about if your clothes are really dirty, or if it could be worn again. Clothes can go through a lot of things when they’re washed, which will leave them worse for wear. So think about if your items really need a wash, again, this is especially true if things are made from mostly synthetic fabrics. Clothes can also shrink in the wash, meaning that you won’t get as much use out of them.
