Review By Monique and Cynthia
It was my mom who had seen a write up in a local paper about using soap nuts to do laundry, among other things, that prompted her to have me send off an email to Buy Soap Nuts.com.
But What are Soap Nuts?
They are actually not nuts at all. They are berries (also known as Soap Berries) that grow on trees in India & Nepal. There are two main varieties: sapindus trifoliatus (The Small Soap Nut) and sapindus mukorossi (The Large Soap Nut). The Large Soap Berry is the most commonly used in cleaning, but both varieties are quite effective.
I had never tried soap nuts before to do my laundry with and neither had mom. My first try out I accidentally put a few of the nuts in a bag, threw them in the wash and then proceeded to also pour soap in! I had to quickly pull the bag back out! Got a bit confused, and "hard wired" I think to just automatically pour the liquid in.
Mom and I both found they cleaned our clothes nicely, despite it seeming very weird not to see soap in the machine. They also left our clothes smelling fresh. They are safe with HE machines which mom has, but they do require you to use warm or hot water so they soften up, which was one of the things that wasn't a plus for me, as I use cold washes for my laundry. So I've had to switch over to the warm wash for a while to use the nuts.
The nuts can be used 4 to a pouch and used for a few times before you need to change them.
They are also good for cleaning by boiling them with water on the stove and making a liquid to use. They can be used, in the liquid form, for cleaning just about anything. From dish washer detergent, to window & glass cleaner, to repairing oily or dry hair. They are a great multi-purpose cleaner.
Mom had recieved one of their stain remover sticks for review as well and had this to say about it: "I found the stain remover bar worked good, wet it, rubbed and rinsed with hot water, the stains were gone."<>

We haven't tried soap nuts, but my sister has and she loves them! She has allergies to most detergents, but these are wonderful for her.

I ordered Soap Nuts immediately after watching the presentation on Dragons' Den. A natural detergent AND Canadian owned and operated? Yes, please! I eagerly bundled up the laundry when my order arrived and tossed the Soap Nuts in the drum of our front load washer. At first, I thought to myself, "How is it cleaning when there aren't any suds?" I can say in all honesty, WOW! Soap Nuts are awesome! Our clothes came out smelling clean, but not like soap, and any residual soap/fabric softener seemed to be removed at long-last. My significant other likes to use Axe body spray. Anyone who's washed shirts after someone's worn Axe knows that most detergents can't seem to get rid of the Axe smell so you're left with laundry that smells like soap and old Axe. I'm very happy to report that Soap Nuts got rid of the Axe smell from his clothes! Finally, shirts that smell like they're actually clean! I highly recommend Soap Nuts. The Safix scrub pads are also great. I haven't tried out Buncha Farmers stain remover yet.
