Repurposing: An Inexpensive Way To Decorate
Wednesday, November 17, 2010
We all need to save money where we can. Redecorating your home can become costly, stressful and very time-consuming, and these are just some of the reasons why repurposing as a type of decorating has become a popular way to go. Repurposing allows you to flex your creative muscle by using items you already own to decorate and give your home a new look. Here are some of the easiest and best ways to redecorate with what you already have.
Decorate with old kitchenware - Many homeowners have wooden or metal spoons and utensils, and over the years they turn into vintage items. Strategically polishing them and hanging them on the kitchen walls is a great way to give your kitchen a vintage looking feel without extra clutter.
Turn old blouses into pillows - If you have outdated blouses you know you'll never wear or a sweater you got for Christmas in a print that just doesn't look right on you, cut off the sleeves and collar and sew them into throw pillows. Wacky prints or itchy sweaters may not be something you would wear on your body, but could make a great extra touch to your living room or bed.
Repaint old wooden furniture - If you're going for a new look in your bedroom or living room but your existing furniture or accessories just aren't what you're looking for, consider painting them a different color. A large mirror with a brown wooden frame might look old and frumpy to you, but painting the wood black can turn it from outdated and boring brown to classic french decor. A brown wooden table can go from plain to white, black or brightly colored to give your kitchen a pop of color.
Turn a bookshelf into a mini bar - If you no longer have room for that old bookshelf, instead of trashing it, use it for a minibar in the kitchen. Paint it black or a bright color of your choice, add some round gold thumb tacks around the frame for a little embellishment, and line the shelves with a fun printed wallpaper, wrapping paper or scrapbooking paper. Stack your wine glasses, beer glasses and shot glasses on the shelf and store wine and liquor bottles on it as well. It's a super easy way to make an elegant and fun looking bar without spending a dime.
Virtually any piece of furniture can be repainted to give it an entirely different look. Experiment a little and decide what type of look you want to go for, and rather than investing in entirely new pieces, work with what you have and turn it into something completely different.
