After Turkey, mashed potatoes are probably the most popular Thanksgiving food. What would Thanksgiving be without mashed potatoes? But if you are looking for a way to spice up your Thanksgiving dinner this year, and if you’re looking to get a little adventurous and serve something different to your family and friends, here are some great mashed potato recipes that will blow your socks off. Some are traditional and some don’t even have potatoes in them! Take a gander at the mashed potato recipes below and take a chance on different kind of potato this Thanksgiving.

1) Traditional Mashed Potatoes: If you’re looking for the tried and true, here’s a great traditional recipe that is guaranteed to please, from the internet cooking maven, The Pioneer Woman. Her secret: lots of butter. Lots of salt.

2) Parmesan Mashed Potatoes: Looking for a little extra cheesiness in your mashed potatoes? Maybe a bit of an Italian flair? Give these potatoes—mashed with parmesan cheese and black pepper—a whirl.

3) Blue Cheese Mashed Potatoes Topped with Caramelized Onions and Mushrooms: Who says your mashed potatoes have to be chocked full of unhealthy butter? Why not chocked full of even unhealthier (and oh so yummy) blue cheese? And when you top it with caramelized onions and mushroom, you’ve just sealed the deal on your new annual Thanksgiving recipe.

4) Mashed Potatoes with Sour Cream and Chives: What could be better than awesome, southern-style mashed potatoes? Adding sour cream and chives! Give your family and friends this savory recipe for your next Thanksgiving.

5) Fluffy Pesto Mashed Potatoes: A little pesto, some leeks, garlic, and parmesan cheese can go a long way to transform your usual mashed potatoes into something delightful.

6) Colcannon: So you’re not Irish. That doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy this traditional Irish recipe for your next Thanksgiving. Colcannon mixes creamy mashed potatoes with kale for a different flavor that will add a little luck to your Thanksgiving festivities.

7) Maple Mashed Sweet Potatoes: Russets don’t have to have all the fun at Thanksgiving. Try this recipe out for a sweet twist on an old tradition.

8) Sweet Potato and Red Beet Mash: Since we’re right around the corner from Christmas, you can give this red and green concoction a try. Mixed with Greek yogurt and topped with cooked leeks, you may never go back to plain old white potatoes.

9) Mashed Turnips: Ready to move past potatoes? These mashed turnips have the same look and consistency as traditional mashed potatoes, but have a savory and rich flavor to them that needs very little salt. If you’re feeling adventurous, this might be the recipe for you.

10) Parsnip Puree Topped with Almond Parmesan: If you’re looking for something even more off the beaten path than mashed turnips, you could go for this parsnip puree that looks and feels like mashed potatoes, but with more flavor, and topped with delicious almond parmesan to get your mouth watering.

  1. These all look great! Another idea is to use chive and onion cream cheese. It makes the potatoes creamy and have a great flavor.
